A few weeks ago I shared a cool technique that my boys and I used to create 3D Sharpie artwork. We enjoyed the project so much that I thought we could use a similar process to create Sharpie tinfoil pendants. These pendants can be used as necklace charms, keychains or backpack clips. To make a Sharpie tinfoil pendant: 1) Cut a small (1 ½ inch) circle from an old cereal box. 2) Cut a slightly bigger circle from tin foil. 3) Draw a simple design on the cardboard, cover the outline of the design with glue and yarn, and set it aside to dry. 4) Cover the dull side of the tin foil with a glue stick, wrap the tin foil around the cardboard containing the design, and secure the tinfoil with a piece of tape on the backside of the pendant. 5) Rub the tinfoil on the front of the pendant with a piece of felt to help the yarn design show through. 6) Colour the design with Sharpies, and allow to dry. 7) Punch a hole in the top of the pendant, and add a pendant clasp. (These can be purchased inexpensively wherever craft supplies are sold, but a paper clip would work too.) You could use a piece of yarn or ribbon, but I hung mine from a chain I had in my jewellery box. Cute, right? I think this is a fantastic craft for kids of all ages. Hello Upper Elementary friends! It's Jennifer from Teaching to Inspire in 5th. We are knee deep in test prep over in Georgia. I wanted to write a post describing (and showing a few pictures) of my favorite test prep activities to use. Gallery Walk: For this activity, I post several problems on chart paper around the room. In groups, the students walk around and complete each problem. I have them complete them on a piece of paper first. Then, I choose groups to complete on the chart paper. Finally, if time allows, I have the groups rotate through one more time to compare and contrast their answers and strategies with the work on the chart. Graffiti Test Prep: If you have never seen this before, students respond to a text or stimulus on butcher paper at the same time. For this activity, I took three test prep questions and taped them to the middle of a piece of butcher paper. I sectioned off the butcher paper into four sections: A, B, C, D. This referred to the students and not the answer choices. The students had to finish these sentences stems for each of the three questions: The question is asking me... The topic/skill of the question is.... I already know .... The answer is ... because ... ....is wrong because... (done for all three incorrect answers) Hands On Test Prep: Finally, I love anything hands on that the students can manipulate. Here are two examples of hands on test prep centers I have used. This one is a dialogue center where the students manipulate the punctuation and place it correctly. This hands on center has the students correcting pronoun and antecedent agreement errors. I was in Georgetown, Texas, last week with some AWESOME teachers. Several of them had these prompt cards on their name lanyards. I thought it was very clever and a great classroom management tool. They told me that they got the cards on autismcircuit.net. Well, I went there and I was impressed! The Texas Autism Circuit might have created tools and techniques for students on the autism spectrum, but I guarantee you that these would be useful in any classroom. They explain how and when to use the tools and give you printable templates and resources. Here’s a sample of what they have - FREE of course! Well, I'm a little behind in my posting of units, but I'm just about caught up! After our Halloween unit, we jumped right into inventors and inventions! We first talked about what inventions are and made a T-chart of inventors we already knew and some we learned about using an inventor puzzle game. We dug deeper into Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell's lives by reading books about them and watching United Streaming videos about their discoveries. My wonderful teammate Sam made a Venn diagram with facts about each inventor. We also talked about Benjamin Franklin and his many inventions by reading this wonderful book! I learned a lot from it too! Finally, I had the kids draw their favorite inventions we had learned about that week. The second week of the unit focused more on them as inventors. We talked about how inventors invent things in order to solve a problem or make life easier or better. We used several activities from One Extra Degree's Inventor Unit. We talked about patents and why they are important. I posed several problems from the unit and asked the kids to draw in their science journals inventions that would solve that problem. Our final project was creating their own invention. The kids brought in items from home to create something with and on Friday I just let them loose! It was hilarious to watch them work and talk to each other. We had some very interesting creations when time was up. I had them fill out a sheet from the unit where they drew and labeled their invention with the materials they used. I then displayed them on my reading table (first time all year its been cleared off! hah!) for a little project show. The kids got to walk around the table and look at each other's creations. Here are a couple examples up close! This is an amazing art and math lesson that I got from a teacher at a conference who did teach a district over from me, but is now getting her PhD. She always had amazing stuff to present at conference. (You're amazing, Mary Franco!) Anyway, this lesson involves Paul Klee and multiplication. I made a little three page Smart Notebook lesson about Klee's work "Once Emerged From the Gray of Night" (where I used to show a poster of it) and have the students talk about what's more important--the words of the poem or the colors and composition? Then we talk about putting two things (like writing and art, or math and art together). It's SUCH an amazing lesson, here's a sneak peek: So, students get a little background knowledge of Klee, then we talk about tessellations and multiplication (and practice on the Smart Board). Then, students get a page of one-inch graph paper and write out a one digit by one digit multiplication problem with a two digit answer. I tell them to choose one that's hard for them to remember, or their favorite one. They then repeat that problem seven times, dropping down and over one square for 4 times, then down and back a square for three times, making them into interlocking tessellation shapes: After they've drawn it all out in pencil and I've checked it, they choose ONE color of fine-tip marker to trace it with, then use colored pencil or watercolor pencil to color. The coloring is a bit of a challenge for them, because they need to forget that they're numbers and only look at the space. They then color it in patterns/designs to make it visually interesting and play with people's minds ('math? I dont' see any math!') It's an awesome lesson that really challenges their thinking. This one really shows the patterns and designs. Oh, it's also important that their numbers COMPLETELY fill the one inch box of the graph paper. I always try to do this lesson at a time of the year when classroom teachers are complaining about students not remembering their math facts. I usually do it with fifth grade, but I did it with sixth one year at the teachers' request.
I L*O*V*E this book! It is written in rhyme, so it is really fun to read. The pictures are AH..MAZING, I can spend a long time just studying the pictures, and I think Mr. Magee looks like my husband, so it makes me smile :) With that said, if you have not read this book, it is a must! It is a silly adventure of Mr. Magee taking his dog Dee to the mountains to go camping. There is a bag of marshmallows, a bear and a waterfall all involved in Mr. Magee and Dee's camping adventure! Hmm, if your curiosity is peaked, I hope you find this book and add it to your classroom library, I am sure you will love it as much as I do! If you have this book here are some reading skill and strategy questions and ideas that might inspire a lesson. Reading level: 3.0 Theme: Camping, Adventure Genre: Adventure Fiction Suggested Vocabulary: spree, hitched, Rambler, brook, knolls, coals, embers, dozy, snitch, hitch, shimmying, rapids, quiver, ledge, stranded, bank, rank dismay Reading skills and strategies: asking questions - {possible questions at before} What is a camping spree? How will they get off the waterfall? {possible questions after} Why did they end up camping in their backyard? author's point of view - 3rd person point of view author's purpose - entertain{evidence} The story is written in rhyme. The bear pulled the trailer out of the stream and the trailer rolled all the way down the hill and landed right next to the car. All these things make for a silly entertaining story. beginning, middle, end - {most important event from beginning} Mr. Magee and Dee set out to go camping. {most important event from middle} As the bear was looking for marshmallows he unhitched the trailer from the car and made Mr. Magee and Dee roll into a stream. {most important event from end} The bear pulled the trailer out of the river and let it go so it rolled down the hill and landed next to the car. They drove home and camped in their backyard. cause and effect - Why did Mr. Magee load up the camper? because he was getting ready for a camping trip. Why will Dee love camping? because the views are fantastic, there is no one around, the air is sweet and he will sleep like a log. Why did Dee gather pine cones? so they could start a campfire. Why did the bear come to their camp spot? because they left the marshmallows out and the bear could smell the sweet treat. Why did the car and trailer become unhitched? because the bear went under the hitch. How come Mr. Magee and Dee did not fall down the waterfall? because there was a rock that blocked them. Why did the bear pull the trailer out of the water? because he thought the ball on the end of the trailer hitch was a marshmallow. Why did Mr. Magee and Dee go home? because they thought it might be safer to camp at home. connections - {possible text-to-self connections} Going camping. Having a trailer. Seeing a bear. Having a dog. Roasting marshmallows. drawing conclusions & inferencing - How do you think Mr. Magee feels about camping by the end of the story? {text clues} Mr. Magee and Dee rolled down a hill, landed in a stream and hung over a waterfall because of a bear. {what I know} If my trailer were knocked by a bear and I rolled down a hill and hung over a waterfall I would be scared. {my conclusion} I think that Mr. Magee still likes camping but only where there are no bears. plot - the turning point or climax in the story was when the bear pulled them out of the water and they rolled down the hill and landed next to their car. After that they decided to go home and camp in the back yard. predict - Will Dee love camping? Do you think the bear is going to cause a problem? What will it be? Do you think they will go over the waterfall? How will they get out of the stream and away from the waterfall? Where do you think they are going to go now that the car is hitched up again? sequencing - Mr. Magee and Dee hitch up the trailer and go camping. They stop in the perfect spot. They roast marshmallows. Dee and Mr. Magee go to bed. A bear comes and unhitches the trailer and car. The car rolls one way and the trailer rolls the other way. The trailer, Mr. Magee and Dee land in the stream. The bear thinks the trailer hitch is a marshmallow so he pulls the trailer out of the stream. The trailer rolls away again. The trailer lands right next to the car. Mr. Magee hitches up the car and heads home.
