My mother should be concerned. With every seasonal shift, I inadvertently go off in search of new inspiration for my clothing, home decor, art, and attitude. In previous years, it's always been seemingly harmless: one summer I was obsessed with everything that reminded me of Lisa Frank. Another summer I was Betty Draper. Another summer I created my life to match the "Rabbit Fur Coat" album. Another summer I cut off my hair and replaced all of my clothes with black skinny jeans and white v-necks to channel Elvis from "Jailhouse Rock". Yes, that actually happened. Yes it was awesome. No it didn't last. This summer's inspiration is far from clean cut and I have no intention of shying away. This summer is kitschy, bizarre, brash, unapologetically tacky, mildly unnerving, charmingly disturbing and strange as only the transition from 60's to 70's can be. This summer is all about cheap beer, gaudy cat eye sunglasses, John Waters on VHS, stale sprinkled donuts, Aqua Net, and motherfucking girl gangs. I really am starting a girl gang. Wanna join? If I was going to be totally honest, I'd probably just tell you that I want to be Divine from Female Trouble. Period. Many of these images are from the astoundingly talented Nadia Lee, and sources for all other images can be found here. Do you have inspiration this summer? Is it themed? What about it caught your eye? Do tell.
Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring/Summer 2007 haute couture collection introduced at Paris Couture Week clearly borrowed heavily from art and religion. The stunning gowns, headgear, shoes --even hair and makeup styling are an homage to the Virgin Mary and religious art. below: Early christian art depicting Madonna and Child; clearly Gaultier's inspiration His newest collection has a fabulous Byzantine feel and the 'halos' around his models are reminiscent of early depictions of christian art in stained glass windows and paintings. Some of the fabrics are made to appear as stained glass or religious paintings: Religious iconography is embedded within many of the gowns: and some models even carried what appeared to be bibles in the show: The headgear and gowns are simply stunning. Take a look: The designer: Above : Gaultier Greeting The Audience and carrying a white lily, the symbol of the Annunciation Maybe if I pray hard enough, I can afford one of his gowns....

Cosplaying is easy, but cosplaying well? That's something else. Sure you can go online and buy yourself a costume (just no more Harley Quinn, please, we beg you), but the real show-stealers are the ones who make their own. And as you can see from this list compiled by Bored Panda, some people's ideas are seriously damn clever! Don't forget to vote for your favorite, and let us know what you think in the comments! I've been wanting to do a weaving project with Ruby for awhile now...weaving a giant sun seemed like something that would totally appeal to her seven yr old sensibilities, and would appeal to this sun lovin' mamma as well! We started by collecting some sticks...4 of them cut into 4 foot lengths, laid into a star shape and then bound by twine, (actually, when I say "we" I mean, papa Toadstool did the work and I played my role as director and professional baby wrangler). Then we gathered up all the yellow material, roving, and yarn in the house. We cut our material into 2-3 inch strips, (then we attached the strips to make huge pieces by tying them together...you could also sew them together, but we like things easy here at the Toadstool)! We began ours by weaving in the roving first...I tied it to the first branch and then just went over and under the branches...pulling it tight as you go through each one. After the roving we started on the material. Doing it like a God'e Eye, (which is essentially what this is)...going under and over the first branch and then over and under on the next branch. Again...pull your material tight when you weave through each branch! We weaved until Ruby got sick of it, at which point we declared it was DONE!! Then this massive art piece went outside and into a tree...our own giant sun/art piece we can enjoy every day! I like that it will get weathered over the season and change...maybe birds will get bits of the yellow roving to use for their nests! This was a super fun project that we all enjoyed doing together...and a great BIG way to welcome the sun to your own backyard!! Here's Ruby with the finished "sun"...you can get an idea of how big it is!! Hope your day is sunny and bright! Maureen xo
