On Saturday, we celebrated our daughter's second birthday with an Eric Carle, Very Hungry Caterpillar themed birthday party. Our little girl is turning two, but most of the Very Hungry Caterpillar invites I found online were specifically for a first birthday, so I decided to make the invitations myself. It was my first experience designing invitations and I'm pleased with how they turned out. I like the rhythmic wording. I printed them two to a page -4x6 size- at the UPS store for under $3. Guest were guided to our house by this little guy (old wicker paper plate holders, spray painted green) who stood at the corner of our street pointing the way. Party guests included two sets of grandparents and six of her little playmates. Our party activities loosely resembled an organized playgroup that most of the guests regularly attend. Upon arrival, did a brief circle time in which I read the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and sang a few favorite songs, such as Wheels on the Bus, If Your Happy and You Know It, etc. We also did a few rounds of Ring-Around-the-Rosie. I love that my toaster is hidden from view. Food labels displayed in champagne flutes of orange jello held by plastic forks. We also ate "Caterpillar Krispies," which were quite a hit with the children. After snacks, we opened presents and enjoyed free play with bubbles in the back yard. The next activity was a caterpillar scavenger hunt. I gave each child a plastic container with an egg inside. (Containers were a dollar store multi-pack find) The egg contained a "very tiny and very hungry" caterpillar. The children, and their parents, were sent into the front yard in search of plastic eggs containing miniature toy fruit from one of the centerpieces. The kids were also encouraged to find additional items for their caterpillars, such as twigs, leaves, and grass. The final activity was a parachute and balloon activity. This is another playgroup activity that the kids all love. First we played "balloon popcorn" bouncing the balloons on the bed sheet. The second parachute activity involves floating the sheet up and down while the children giggle and laugh underneath. The party was such a fun event. Last weekend we had Wyatt's 4th birthday party! I should clarify that this was less of a "party", and more of a family gathering. I just like doing themes for the kids' birthdays for fun. When I asked Wyatt what he wanted to do for his party this year, he said he wanted a race car party, so that is what we did! Everything was pretty easy to throw together for this party. I bought some checked and red paper and used it to make the birthday banner and signs. I also wrapped some of the checked paper around the "coolant" water bottles, and used the extra paper for a runner on our "pit stop" table. I added red streamers and black and white balloons to fit with our race car color scheme. Bought some "spare tire" chocolate donuts, and some red Kool-aid for the "transmission fluid" (which is actually red in real life too). I originally wasn't going to label everything, but I asked Derek what car fluid was red, and he talked me into making the labels last minute - and I think they ended up tying the theme together really well! I washed some of Wyatt's Hot Wheels cars and put them on top of some red cupcakes. If you bought some new Hot Wheels cars this would be a fun way to give out favors to the kids who come to the party too! And that was it! It was a really simple theme to put together, and we had fun with it! I know the first question will be "When did you start planning the 2nd birthday?" Well to be honest, I had picked theme and started work on a plan when Jack was 13 months old. I know, I know but it was so easy to decide. Jack LOVES Elmo's World. Just so you know I only contacted the cake lady (Kate Petronis) seven months in advance. Like I had said before you need your date, location, and theme. Jack's birthday this year fell on a Thursday so the date was easy; the Saturday following his birthday. Location was what needed to be decided on. We knew with the group of kids we had coming we needed to do it at a park. So we decided to rent a pavilion at Fowler Park. It's a beautiful park and the set up was prefect for the party. Let the fun begin. I have made a rule for myself that I can't start Jack's birthday stuff until after the 1st of the year. Well I broke the rule this year. (50% isn't that bad) Since I was off for Winter Break I decided to work on the invitations. I had to get my sample done so I could get sizes right. I include a picture of Jack on the invitation so this can make it hard to get the sizing right because I don't take the actual picture until the end of February. So it doesn't always fit the design of the card. That's what happen this year so I just moved things around on the front to make it work. AJ and I had discussed different ideas for the front of the invitation. 1. Jack in his Elmo shirt in front of his Elmo's tent. 2. Jack running around the park in his Elmo shirt. Well we ended doing something different. I had asked Goose (my dad) to make a Sesame Street pole and sign that I could use for decoration to put outside the pavilion. He did an AMAZING job! He delivered it to us on the day we decided to Jack's pictures. Jack's Elmo tent was still at Carly's house so we couldn't use it. And It was raining so the park pictures were out. I decided to put him in his Elmo shirt at Bridge's and just start shooting pictures. The first shot he was hugging his Sesame Street pole. That's the one we used. It didn't matter that you couldn't see his Elmo shirt. Originally the theme was just Elmo's World but the Sesame Street characters crept in. Bridge loves Oscar so I had to figure out how to include him. So I decided on "For Our Friends" for the favor table. I made two centerpieces with all the characters. I had a banner with the characters and a sign. Since "Elmo loves his goldfish and his crayons too" then what better favors for the kids then real goldfish and personalized crayon packs for each kid. AJ picked out the Sesame Street pinata for the kids. So when Target had book bags for $1, I bought each kid a Sesame Street one to hold their candy in and to take their crayon pack home. I made a big sign for the front of the pavilion (but it was too windy so we used it as a tablecloth), a small banner for TV/Cake table, and a little Mr. Noodle poster. For the food table, we had a "goldfish bar". We served five different kinds of goldfish and Swedish Fish. I made centerpieces for five of the tables that included Elmo, Mr. Noodle, Dorothy, the letter J and the number 2. We have a cake/TV table. The TV was to show Jack's 2nd year video. I made a sign for the TV using a phrase from Elmo's World. Kate Petronis' cake speaks for itself. I used vinyl to decorate buckets. I turned the two red buckets into Elmos for the drinks and ice. The green bucket I made into an Ocsar and the blue bucket I made into Cookie Monster. We used the green and blue buckets for holding the gifts and then for bringing them home. Jack LOVES to dance so we had to have a dance center. We made a dance mix of all Jack's favorite songs. And of course, I made a scrapbook page for everyone to leave Jack a message that I can put in his scrapbook. The kids loved the Sesame Street pinata! AJ ended up cutting it open, The kids had more fun playing with the candy. The Birthday Boy was a little upset when everyone sang Happy Birthday to him. And of course, Bridge had to make an Elmo giftbag for the birthday boy! What an Awesome Elmo's World/Sesame Street Birthday Party!!!

Weston was sooooo excited for his party. We had to make a countdown calendar because there were LOTS of questions as to when the party was happening. He woke up to a decorated house and a big ol' present {a basketball hoop}. It was so fun seeing how excited he was for everything. I really need to learn how to do collages so until then.... here are a million pictures to scroll through. Every party, no lie, I mess up on the first round of the cake. It's my new norm and I'm just starting to accept that this happens every time. Grrr. Around 3 am the first cake turned out to be a disaster... but it all worked out and I think the end cake turned out really cute. Weston was obsessed with it. The little tool belts to turn the kiddies into a construction crew. We had a little meeting to get the crew outfitted and ready for their big jobs. They hammered nails, dug in the sand, helped construct a big cardboard house, built towers, ate pulled pork sandwiches for lunch, and of course ate cake. Weston takes his candle blowing very seriously! Three happy years... we love you Weston. It was a perfect day, except for not getting a group picture of the kids. {Many thanks to my mom who flew in to help me party prep. And to Cam who took pictures during the party. Love you both.}

My mother-in-law was planning her annual Teddy Bear Picnic for her preschool class and asked if I'd make something. I had a super busy week, so I needed something that wouldn't be too time consuming. I found this idea online and thought it was PERFECT!! No baking needed!! I used 3 Musketeer candy bars because they would be the easiest for what I wanted to do and least messy for the preschoolers!! Some instructions online said to cut the Teddy Bears (Teddy Grahams) basically in half and "glue" them onto the car. Instead of doing that, I used a small Paring Knife to cut out a "seat" for the bears and then just pushed the legs down into the seat. I cut M&Ms in half for the steering wheel and used whole M&Ms for the wheels. I used Royal Icing (it doesn't take much) to glue everything together and for the headlights!! This is a fun project to make WITH your kids as well!! There are tons of ways to change it up too!! Use different candy bars for the car. Use skittles or other small candies for the wheels and steering wheel. Use melted chocolate chips as your glue. Use your imagination and have fun!!! The kids loved them - so it ended up being the perfect treat for a Teddy Bear Picnic!!
