It was Confucius who said, “Study the past if you would define the future”. Historical pictures allow us to do just that. They depict some of the most important moments of the days gone by, which we can turn back to and analyze one image at a time. And learn something new with each one of them, whether it’s an old photo from a family album or a snapshot that made it to the history books.
Tips for visiting Ellis Island for the first time written by a native New Yorker, including how to get the most out of your visit to Ellis Island Museum.
Ellis Island and immigration are a huge part of American history! With this STEM challenge, students will learn more about immigration and Ellis Island. Then students will use their engineering skills as they engineer a suitcase to take all of their most prized belongings as they come to America. Who says that historical events can't use STEM and be hands-on? Change the way you teach history and add more STEM to your classroom with this fun and engaging social studies and STEM challenge! This would be a great lesson to learn more about immigration and Ellis Island and a fun way to help students bring history to life! This lesson was created for my Georgia 5th graders! My students are learning about the Turn of the Century, immigration, and Ellis Island. I wanted a fun way to help them use real-world STEM while they learned about these historic events in American history. It meets the Georgia Social Studies Standards of Excellence SS5H1 (Describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century). Again, this would be a great activity for learning about Ellis Island! This would be a hands-on, fun, engaging way to teach this part of American History! Students learn more when their lesson is engaging! There are so many ways to use math, science, social studies, and engineering just with this one lesson! I promise…your kids will remember immigration and Ellis Island after they engage with this STEM Challenge. I have my students for 40 minutes at a time. This lesson starts with a story about immigration! There are two additional video links about Ellis Island. Then it gives you the challenge, suggested materials, and guides you through the process of getting kids ready to complete the challenge. You could possibly extend it into a two or three week lesson activity. Please feel free to share any feedback. I have more resources if you feel this one was helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my resources! Don't forget to Follow Me to see all fun, engaging STEM Challenges!! I teach from this very same file! It is a good visual for students and if you were to be observed by administration. It helps to guide you with the lesson and gives the students a visual of what is expected. I work super hard on these lessons because I want my students to be engaged, have fun, and enjoy learning while they are in my classroom! I try to create real-world lessons where students have to engineer and design the solution. It also gives them something to take home to hopefully explain the "process" of what they learned to adults at home! Please feel free to ask my questions and leave helpful feedback!! At the end of our immigration unit, we had a simulation of the journey through Ellis Island. The students created a character from a country of their choosing and pretended they were coming to America. The kids carried their baggage and passport with them as they traveled. As they visited the various inspection areas, they received a stamp on the back of their passport. This file includes a color and black and white version.Welcome to America! Thanks!Hilary LewisCheck out my blog!Follow me on Pinterest!Follow me on FaceBook!Follow me on Twitter!Follow me on YouTube!
