Seen just a few yards further on from the last picture in this album, trolleybus route 639 continues its journey past the tube station at the junction with Kentish Town Road (seen on the extreme right of the picture), Parkway and Camden Road. On what appears to be a warm sunny day, the bus is flanked by what looks like two convertibles - behind the bus is a Hillman and to the right, possibly an Austin. The wires in the top right corner of the picture were for trolleybus routes 627, 629 and 653 which ran north from Tottenham Court Road via Hampstead Road and Mornington Crescent and turned off right into Camden Road on their way to Holloway. This trolleybus will join those routes for the short distance along the southern part of Camden High Street, but will turn left at Mornington Crescent and make it's way to Moorgate via King's Cross and the Angel Islington. The station entrance, directly behind the trolleybus, is covered by a giant hoarding, which you can just about see. The tube station received a direct hit from the Luftwaffe in October 1940 and it appears that this hoarding would have been in place until restoration was complete. See pics 190 and 191 for views of the damage and its aftermath. More info and comments welcome. (N.B. This picture is from the Camden Town set, which includes photos taken in 1901,1927, the 30's and the 1940's bomb damage to the tube station. The rest are views of the Camden area in the 1950's, with many of them, 'then and now' pics. Click here to see the full set www.flickr.com/photos/59082098@N05/sets/72157627101241916/ )

The whole of Kelly Street, painted bright colours! There are other short stretches of streets around this area which look a bit like this, but this street has gone all the way. RGL entry.
