This also includes a song by Jeanne Dickson! The preschool and early elementary lesson and printables are both included. Let’s study a miracle that Jesus did. Jesus proved His power and that He is the Son of God. Jesus had been healing people. They came to Him in great crowds. It was evening and Jesus saw all the people around Him. There was a certain scribe nearby and he told Jesus that he would follow Jesus wherever He was going. Jesus told the scribe that “Foxes have holes and birds that fly in the air have nests. But He didn’t have anywhere to rest.” A disciple asked Jesus if he could go bury his father, and Jesus replied to follow Him. The disciples went in the boat with Jesus and He told them to “Cross over to the other side”. Matthew, Mark and Luke write about this event that happened and we are not told how many disciples are there. Mark states that they left the crowd and took Jesus in a boat. Mark also tells us there were other small boats with them (vs. 36). They launched the boat and headed for the other side of the Sea of Galilee. All of a sudden, a powerful windstorm came! The waves were crashing into the boat and the boat began to fill with water! It was dangerous and the disciples were afraid. They went to Jesus, but He had fallen asleep. Jesus was sleeping on a pillow in the back of the boat (the stern [Mark vs. 38]). The disciples woke Jesus up and told Him that they were perishing! They said “Save us! Don’t You care that we are perishing?” Jesus asked them “Why are you so worried? Where is your faith? Why do you have so little faith?” Jesus stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea! Jesus told the storm “Peace, be still!” Instantly, the winds and the sea waters were calm. It was a great calm! It wasn’t just a storm that had naturally died down, it was instantly stopped by the power of Jesus! That means the waves even stopped rolling when normally after a storm, it takes time for them to slow down and stop. Jesus asked His disciples why they were so afraid. Why didn’t they have faith? They were very scared of the storm, but they saw the power Jesus had over the wind and the sea, they were amazed by what Jesus could do! They had been so afraid and they were so amazed they said “Even the winds and the water obey Jesus when He commands them to stop!” Jesus is amazing! For a hands-on experiment about the water and waves, I had this container with water in it. I used a plastic boat and let it float about and started to move it to the other side. Then I swished the water and created waves and let the boat rock about in the water. We talked about Jesus commanding the wind and water to stop. So, I stopped playing in the water, but of course the water was still choppy and water was filling the boat. Jesus can make the storm and waves stop instantly, but we can’t. Jesus is awesome! Just like He watched over His disciples, He watches over us. (boats were @ Dollar Tree 3 for $1.00 or Hobby Lobby summer toys or Oriental Trading has some.) If you want to let the students play create waves in the water, leave enough room for the waves to stay in the bucket and have towels ready to dry off hands, arms and boats. A special thank you to Jeanne Dickson for sharing these songs! This includes the one-page black & white song printable and the color flipchart. There is a Jesus and a boat that can be printed on cardstock and attached to large craft sticks to use. These are plain and can be used as different resources. Click here to download. The kids love standups. They can be used as a visual, review visuals, let the students retell the lesson, and/or a take home. Jesus is on one standup and you just turn Him around. The boats are on one also. Print on cardstock and fold the backgrounds in half and they are ready to use. Many young children deal with fear in one form or another. Common fears are separation anxiety, fear of the dark, fear of storms, and fear of visiting the doctor. In helping children overcome fear, we should acknowledge that their fears are very real to them, and then point them to Jesus. Show them that Jesus is bigger and more powerful than their fear. Assure them that Jesus will walk with them through their fear, and help them to overcome. In our lesson this week, we want to make Jesus big, powerful, and strong enough to handle any fear in the hearts and minds of our children. Bible Truth: Jesus is bigger than my fears. Bible Story: Jesus commands a storm to be still. Bible Study: Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; II Timothy 1:7 teach interactive read-a-loud Get the children interested and engaged in your lesson, right at the outset, by handing them each an approximately 18 inch strip of a blue streamer. Explain that their streamers are going to be the wind and the waves in today's story. Invite them to practice waving their streamers low to the ground to make waves, and waving them high above their heads to make wind. As they participate, they are both physically and mentally engaged. You are giving squirmy kids an opportunity to move in a way that supports their learning, and you are helping your little learners construct a mental picture of wind and waves, which is critical to understanding this miracle. Bring out a clear container, filled with water, to set the scene for the story. Have a hair dryer ready to go, but bring it out later in the story as an element of surprise. Dramatically read the story from either a children's Bible, or from your own Bible. If you choose to read it from your Bible substitute words such as "tempest" and "perishing" for "storm" and "dying". As you are read, invite the children to interact with the story like so: Jesus and the disciples got into a boat. Gently rock from side to side. Suddenly a windstorm arose. Wave streamers in the air. Turn on the hair dryer, and direct it towards their streamers to blow them around. The boat was covered with waves. Rock the container of water with the boat to create waves. Wave streamers low to the ground, and quickly rock from side to side. Jesus was asleep. Lay down and pretend to sleep. The disciples awoke Him. Gently tap the shoulders of the children to wake them up, and then resume the storm. Jesus rebuked the wind and waves. Raise both hands and say, "Peace! Be Still!" There was a great calm. Hold the streamers still. Gently rock from side to side. To conclude the story say: Wow! Jesus did an amazing miracle! He has all the power. He told the wind and waves to be still, and they obeyed Him. You don't need to be afraid, because Jesus is always with you to protect you, take care of you and watch over you. share and pray Ask the children what they are afraid of. I give you fair warning that this will likely turn into a quite lively discussion! In each situation, talk about how Jesus is bigger and more powerful than whatever they are afraid of. Remind them that He is powerful enough to stop wind and waves by just speaking to them! To emphasize the power Jesus has in their terms, ask them if Spiderman or Elsa (or any other character that they are enamored with) can do that. Teach them to say, "In the name of Jesus go away!" and any spirit of fear trying to overtake them must go. Teach them to ask Jesus to give them a big hug, and be with them. Pray with them, and over them, about their fears, speaking peace over them in the name of Jesus. sing The Wind and the Waves Obey Him is good for a puppet song, or to play as the children are working on the craft or color sheet. You will also need a small toy boat, or a small plastic container to use as a boat. Spread the parachute out on the floor, and invite the children to sit around it. Instruct them to not touch the parachute until you have explained the rules and you are ready to start the game. To play this game, place the boat in the center, of the parachute. Each child holds onto their section and moves the parachute up and down to create waves, while trying to keep the boat on the parachute. Walk around the circle, and tap a child on the shoulder and say, "Jesus, wake up!" The child you chose should loudly say, "Peace, be still!" Everyone obeys "Jesus" and stops moving the parachute. "Research has shown that the ability to self-regulate is essential to the development of learning skills and work habits (Baumeister & Vohs, 2011), which are critically important to student success throughout the grades." We have been using the 'Zones of Regulation' as a way to support our students with their self-regulation. We hope to give our learners a good start on their journey to self-regulation. Ontario Kindergarten curriculum has now created 'Self-regulation and Well-being' as one of the main 4 focuses of the program. The curriculum document tells us, "Dr. Stuart Shanker (2013b, p. xiii) identifies the following as six critical elements required for “optimal self-regulation”: when one is feeling calmly focused and alert, the ability to know that one is calm and alert when one is stressed, the ability to recognize what is causing that stress the ability to recognize stressors both within and outside the classroom the desire to deal with those stressors the ability to develop strategies for dealing with those stressors the ability to recover efficiently and effectively from dealing with those stressors" We began our learning by investigating feelings and emotions. We did many activities and spent a couple weeks exploring and learning. We began to slowly introduce the Zones of Regulation to our learners. You can get a copy of the book here. [We did not follow the exact program of the book, but rather used it as inspiration for our own version]. We connected our learning about feelings to the colours of the Zones of Regulation. We then explored each zone in more detail. We used the framework 'looks like, sounds like, feels like" to help our learners use their own experience and to get a full understanding of each zone. We added this work to the wall in our 'Self-Regulation centre' in our classroom. We added photos of our learners demonstrating some of the behaviours and facial expressions you might see for each zone and added those to our wall. Recognizing what Zone they are in and others are in takes some learning. We have been reading a variety of books and discussing what zone we think the characters are in and why. Some of the books we've read are: Since the 'Green Zone' is the zone where we are optimally regulated, we want to support our learners in working to get themselves back to the green zone, should they find themselves in another zone. As a group, they came up with the following list: We have been doing a lot of "noticing and naming" the emotions our learners show throughout the day and then naming the zone they are in. For example, "I see your fists are clenched and you're frowning. I see you're angry and in the Red Zone." We are beginning to work on implementing strategies for our learners to down-regulate (from the Yellow or Red Zone) or up-regulate (from the Blue Zone). Our 'Zones Check-In'. This allows learners to take ownership and to visually see whether they need to up or down regulate. Right now, we give them a strategy we feel will work best (unless they tell us what they need) and are working towards our learners doing this independently. Some strategies we're using: Self-Regulation Centre- we have placed fidget toys and books here for learners to help down-regulate. Yoga- both individually and whole group. Our Yoga centre in the classroom Cosmic Kids Yoga (click for link) Take 5 Breathing- independently or collectively. We (educators and students) are continuing on our learning journey about the Zones of Regulation and ways we can ensure we're regulated (Green Zone) throughout the day. We will continue building independence when up- and down-regulating. We hope you will continue to support the Zones of Regulation at home. If you have any questions, please let us know.
