Where is Pete the Cat Activity. A fun beginning of the year activity for your preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten.
This morning I woke up at 4:30, thinking about making finger puppets. Sure, I know, most people don't wake up early on Sunday morning for anything so silly, but... I did. I guess I must be an early childhood teacher! It's super easy to make! All you need is one blue pipe cleaner, a few scraps of paper, a marker, scissors and tape - and a little imagination of course! I started by shaping the pipe cleaner, from the tail. A small spiral and then a straight part makes the tail, then the rest of the pipe cleaner was twisted around my finger and then up. I cut out paper scraps to make a face and shoes, and used the marker to add details for the eyes. Finally, flip everything over, and use tape to attach the head and shoes to the back of your pipe cleaner. If any tape shows from the front, you can trim it off. Ta-da! Guess who's going to be rocking along when we read our Pete the Cat books next time? Uh-huh, every body, because it's all good!

My daughter loves Pete the Cat. He is her first choice for reading time each day. We're quickly adding to our collection and we check the library shelves each week when we go for titles that we haven't read yet. (This week we picked up a collection of seven books, so we'll be having lots of reading adventures with Pete the Cat!) Her overall favorite is definitely Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons (which she lovingly calls "Pete's Roovy, Roovy Buttons"!) Since keeping her attention is a bit of a challenge, I made some games that she can play along with our reading time. Some days I read to her while she plays a game and others, we play after we read. This free printable button counting grid game is one of the fun activities we've been using.

Do you like cupcakes? I honestly don't and my daughter only eats the frosting, but she loves Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes. In fact, she loves EVERY Pete the Cat book. I've been combining her love for Pete the Cat and his many adventures with some fun learning games like these free printable cupcake counting grids for preschool math. Shiloh loves counting the cupcakes (and the buttons on our fun button counting grids)! I love that she is learning to count while she feels like she is playing.
Do your kids have a favorite book character? My six-year-old is pretty obsessed with Pete the Cat... it almost rivals her love for Moana. Which she still watches every.single.day. When she goes to grab a book from her shelves, you can place a bet that it will be Pete the Cat. Since she loves that silly cat so much, I've been creating some fun math activities to go along with them, so that we can combine our math and literacy time. Thanks so much for supporting my efforts with this blog! My bloggy pal Hilary over at Raising Fairies and Knights started a fun Monthly Crafting Book Club - a challenge to create activities to go along with some of the most beloved children's books. We had some great times last year (see links at the end of this post) and have continued the fun this year: January - Ladybug Girl Addition Bugs February - Giraffes Can't Dance Roll-a-Dance Die March - How Do Dinosaurs...Social Skills Game April - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Box May - Unique Nature Creations June - Pinkalicious-Inspired Collage Art July - Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten Can Craft August - Homemade Bow and Arrow Flight Investigation September - Who Can Blow the Biggest Pumpkin Challenge This month, our little group is having fun with Pete the Cat books. We have several of these here at the house, but Gv loves one the most in particular, so we focused on it: Pete the Cat - I Love My White Shoes We came up with a whole bunch of things to do to go along with this hip, fun book. First, I found a couple of really cute reading comprehension pages to print out. They both involve story sequencing, but this one was a bit more involved and required Gv to practice her burgeoning writing skills, while this one was simpler and merely involved cutting, pasting and coloring. This was the first time Gv sat down to read, write and spell with something like this all on her own! I wasn't sure if Gv would enjoy doing this one, since it wasn't as challenging, but she still thought it was plenty of fun! Next, Gv designed her own shoe to practice her shoe-tying skills on. We started by tracing around her foot (because tracing feet is always fun) on a sheet of cardstock. Next, Gv cut out her shoe and decorated it with markers. I helped her punch holes to thread the lace through, then she practiced tying it up, using a little rhyme we found last year that she loves: Build a tee pee, come inside Close it up so we can hide Over the mountain, around we go Here's my arrow and here's my bow! Her completed shoe. I'd given her a shoelace to use for this, but she preferred doing the threading with some random piece of ribbon she found in her doll clothes... Finally, we decided to make our own Shoe Book, because Gv loves dressing up in all her shoes and also has lots of fun taking photos of things. First, she modeled a selection of shoes, while I took pictures: Then I printed out the photos, along with some simple labels: Gv was able to cut out these strips, write in the appropriate color word, then staple them all together to make her own little personalized shoe book! These activities were really easy to do, but they made for tons of fun! Do you have a Pete the Cat fan at your house? I'd love to hear!
