I was part of a quiet book swap in the fall with the BYU MBASA (MBA Spouse Association). My group made a "scripture" quiet book. We each signed up to make one page. It think there were 9 people (including me) in my group, so I made 9 of the same page. When we were all done we swapped our extra 8 pages for the other ones in our group. It was nice because I could buy my supplies in bulk for the 1 page. I think they all turned out really cute! Armor of God Joseph and the coat of many colors Liahona (the arrows spin) Tithing Noah's Ark With animal matching card game Lehi's Dream Ammon and the Lamanites with removable sheep (my page) Nephi's drought I have sewn a few of the pages together, but want to add a couple more. If you're planning a trip with your toddler or even just headed to church on Sunday, you might be interested in creating a DIY quiet book to take with you. Quiet books can keep your child busy and quiet for hours! If you have a family of young kids, you know very well the hair-pulling stress of trying to keep them quiet for a given amount of time where you're among other adults also trying to keep their focus, whether this be at church, in a meeting, or on an airplane. My mom put together quiet books for me when
A lot of the younger couples at my church wanted to do quiet books. I know they were thinking cute felt activity books but there was no way we would have the time to finish even a page. I have made one. They take FOREVER! Searching on pinterest I came across these really cute pages from this company. Finch Family and Games. They have so many activity pages to put in a quiet book. The colored ones cost $1 to buy so I bought 5 different ones. It was hard to narrow it down to that. They are made to put in folders but I liked them in binders inside sheet protectors. I got some magnets from JoAnns and put them on the back paper under the sheet protector and then on the back of the laminated cut outs. They stick pretty well as long as you get the thicker magnets. Not the thin kind. I did a few extra things in my own binder for my girls and nephew who will be getting one of these in the mail for Christmas(shhh, don't tell him MW) I added a place to hold all the little cut outs. And then for my daughter I added a few coloring pages. I turned pictures I had taken into black and white sketch pictures and put them in a sheet protector. They she can use white board markers or white board crayons to color on top of the sheet protector and wipe off.
Today's quiet book is fantastic. It is seriously so cute, so well made, and looks so fun. Made by Marci of the blog If These Walls Could Speak, this book has so many awesome pages. It has a painter's palette with colors to match, a shape matching page with a ton of shapes, a camping page with an adorable tent, little finger puppets in sleeping bags, and stars and a moon that are snap on/off, a lion ribbon page, a mailbox with envelopes whose stamps velcro on and off and felt "letters" inside, a puzzle page with three amazing puzzles, a Mr. Potato Head page with awesome accessories, a colorful caterpillar page, a shoe-lacing page, a car and traffic page with velcro road signs, a laundry line page with matching socks, a build-a-snowman page with two snowman and accessories, and a Christmas tree with a lace-up ribbon and tree decorations that snap on and off. I love this book. It is so cute and every page is packed with fun activities. I love all the details, like the little stars on the camping page that snap on and off, and the stamps on the letters, and the banners on the cover, and the little finger puppets in their sleeping bags. I'm definitely inspired by this book, and I hope you will be too! Enjoy! Interview What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence. I'm Marci. I'm a wife, blogger, DIY-er and stay-at-home mama to 2 boys! Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they? I originally made it for my son, Jack, who was 17 months at the time we gifted it to him on Christmas Eve. However, it's intended to be played with by our younger boy as well and any other future children! What's your level of sewing experience? Somewhere between beginner and intermediate. I've done a lot of sewing projects but I prefer to stick with "small" projects like this quiet book, bow ties, etc. I'm also terrible at following patterns - I pretty much wing everything I do. How long did it take you? About 5 months of working on it off and on during nap time. I would say each page took an average of 5 hours so total time was probably around 80 hours. Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? I used the Mr. Potato Head template from this blog but for everything else I looked at pages on Pinterest and then created it myself without patterns. How did you bind your quiet book? I used three grommets per page and intended to hold the book together with D rings but I haven't yet found any big enough so it's currently held together by ribbons threaded through the grommets. What material are the pages made out of? Felt. What other materials did you use? Snaps, velcro, sequins, grommets, ribbons, buttons, zipper, shoelaces, mini clothespins. How much did all the supplies cost you? I had a lot of supplies on hand already but I probably spent somewhere between $30-$40 on items I didn't already have. What's your favorite page? Why? I think I love the tent/camping page the most just because it's so interactive! The star/moon snaps, the zip, and the finger puppets all make it a really fun page! It's also one of the few pages that has something unique I hadn't seen somewhere else first (the finger puppets in sleeping bags inside the tent). I wanted to finish the look of my the quiet book from my How-To Series so I decided to make a cover. I got inspiration from Serving Pink Lemonade. Quiet Book Cover 1 yard of fleece Sewing machine Velcro Cut fleece into two rectangles that are "12 1/2" x 21 1/2 ". Cut two more rectangles that are 1 1/2" x 3 3/4". Take the two smaller pieces of fleece sandwich together and sew all around. Take a 1/2" square of Velcro and sew on to one of the ends of the rectangle you just sewed. Take two larger rectangles and sandwich together. Take smaller rectangle and pin to the middle of the right side. Make sure Velcro is on out side and facing down. Sew all around using a 1/4" seam. Fold in half and place a pin on the top and bottom of the fold to mark the middle. Go down 2 1/4" inches from top and bottom of pin and mark. Place another mark 1/4" from the left and right side of the mark. Using the 4 marks you made last make a buttonhole on each mark. Place remaining piece of Velcro to match other end of Velcro and sew in place. Place rings through button holes and add all of the pages.

Update: I have received many emails and comments asking about a pattern, it's posted in a few places around the blog, but I thought I'd add it to the top of this post too to make it easier to find. I followed Simplicity 3709 for these busy books, with very slight deviations. The Shop's first official order was shipped out yesterday. This book is going to a little girl named Eleanor for her first birthday. Super cute name, right? Her aunt ordered it for her and asked for a rainbow of colors with graphic prints and a bit of a vintage vibe. I hope she likes it as much as I do because I fell in the love with the colors and fabrics while making the book. I'll admit, I might even be a little jealous that this isn't Audrey's book. It was pretty fun to get to package the book up and ship it off. The first order just seems a bit special. Oh, and if you're wondering why the shop is currently empty, it's because I'm up to my ears in orders right now. As soon as I get this batch of books finished and shipped I will add more listings. I'm so thankful for all the support and enthusiasm I've gotten about selling the books. When I listed the first one I didn't know what would come of it, but to have all the listings sell out in just a couple weeks time blew me away. So thanks!
