Awhile back my daughter mentioned that she had been looking for a book for Sofia that had buttons, hooks, zipper, etc. and had not had any luck and this planted an idea. I decided to make such a book as a special birthday gift for my granddaughter. It turned out to be a big project, starting with the design, shopping for all the parts, then rather time-consuming construction. But it was well worth it. She loves it and I am quite pleased with it. Were I to make another I might make a few changes, but all in all it works like I wanted it to. Some of the tasks are easy. Some are challenging for a two-year-old, but the idea was for her to learn and for it to be of interest for more than just the present. The design is all my own and I limited it to things that open and close. Even the cover has a closure—big wooden bead/toggle thingy and an elastic loop. This first page is one I would do differently. The decorative stitching is messy. The varying thickness of the edge, plus the sewn-in zipper made it really difficult to stitch neatly. Eyelet lacing and bow tying. I'm sure it will be awhile before she can do this. Big snap. The heart comes out of the little purse, but is permanantly attached with a piece of cord. Velcro Button. The star resides in the pocket. Hooks My sewing machine can be programmed to make words. This is the first time I've ever used that function.

Last fall I spent a considerable amount of time making quiet book pages for my grandchildren. I've learned a few things along the way - and the next set I make will likely be a little different than those I have completed. I made some about 1.5 years ago that were very similar in style to the ones I have pictured here. Even though I will do some things differently with the next set, the desired outcome has been the same - the kids love them. They do provide a quiet activity for them to do - especially in places like church or the car. So no matter how you do them, just do something. I've got some ideas I can't wait to make happen! The first quiet book I made, I made my own cover. This one I used a 3-ring binder. I glued a layer of warm and natural to the binder, then glued the cover to the warm and natural. I sewed the straps on before it was glued. Easy peasy! Although, I probably should have used a 2" binder rather than a 1". It really limits how many pages can be put in the book at a time. After the fabric was glued onto the outside of the binder - I flipped it over and glued it down on the inside. I then took a piece of card stock and covered it in the green striped fabric and glued it to the inside covers. This covered up the edges of the outer fabric that had been folded over and glued down. I love the barn page. I found the cute finger puppets on-line. I decided to try using the pencil pouch to store them in rather than making a pocket on the page. Love that! Another thing I learned ... SEW EVERYTHING! When I took this picture I hadn't sewn along the outside of the barn or on the white pieces at all. It wasn't long before those edges were pulling up and the pieces were detaching from the barn even though I had used a LOT of glue. Before it was given away - everything was stitched. The I Spy page made from fabric that is on their I Spy quilts. This was taken before the finishing touches were put on the page. This was a fun one to do - but if I were to do it again I might use regular cotton fabric as a background and make the bee so he could be moved around. I used tablecloth vinyl to make the packet and filled it with buttons and beads and all sorts of tiny trinkets I found. Use your 40-50% off coupons on this one! This is one that I glued down REALLY well and figured I didn't need to sew anything. The first time my grandson was on this page, he was picking at the edges and it was already starting to come apart. Ugh....lesson learned. SEW EVERYTHING! LOVE this page! I chose to not cut out felt numbers and letters. Got these in a package of foam stickers. I added E6000 adhesive to the backs of them and they did stick VERY WELL! And look - the flaps lift up with little jewels for them to count. Again, I used the E6000 adhesive to glue them down. Felt strips with a fabric backing. I wish now I had used all felt.... You can see the fray edges of the fabric. These can be stuck together to make a chain, or simply connected one to the other to make a long strip. Good color practice and eye/hand coordination when sticking them together. I think this is one of my top three favorite pages! The fish slide back and forth along the ribbon. I lined the fish with vinyl so they would slide easily. The other critters on top were cut out of fabric and glued to felt with a velcro backing on them so they will stick to the 'sand'. The edges should have been treated with FrayCheck - not sure if that happened before it was given away! There were several more pages that I did - Mr Potato Head, tic-tac-toe, an Easter egg with Easter themed finger puppets, etc. The one VERY IMPORTANT thing that you need to know about making your quiet book is this: NEVER TELL YOUR HUSBAND HOW MUCH MONEY YOU SPENT DOING IT!!! I would purchase things with coupons and on sale, and get things a little at a time, but I stopped keeping track of how much it was costing me because they have truly been a labor of love. As I said - I'm already planning the next set of pages to do. I will tell you this: there will not be any holes in the pages. I'm looking at a totally different way of putting them together in a book. Can't wait!

Every Friday I will be posting some sort of crafty project that I have completed in the past. It could be anything from baking, to sewing, needlecrafts art, decorating, etc. This was the first project I made after Phoebe was born. I went two months without any sewing while I adjusted to motherhood, sleepless nights, and everything else that goes along with becoming a first time parent. My parents came up for the weekend to spend time with their new grandaughter and I pretty much locked myself in my studio for the day, save for feeding the baby every couple of hours. I finished the entire thing - embroidery and all - that day. It felt amazing to be sewing again. This book is still a big hit, and I'm proud to say that Phoebe does know all of her colors. Tutorial is from here. I added an extra page to include a couple of extra colors.
I made this activity book for Lara's birthday. It's made out of old clothes and some Freecycled fabric, and has pages of clothes-fastener activities with facing pages featuring poems about the fasteners. The pages are each stuffed with two layers of felt I had around the house. I cropped the poems (which I wrote) out the pictures, but I am transcribing them under each page. I'm so happy with how it came out! Good thing too, because it took fo-e-vah to make. Why is everything I do so laborious? I think I must just be a very laborious person. Anyway: “Buttons are delightful doodads,” Says a fishwife who reviews shads. “They will last through any new fads,” States a pair of kangaroo lads To their neighbor, Marilou Gladds. Adds famed button expert Clay Kee: “If you snub them when you wakey, Then you’re making a mistakey, Coming to eat breakfast nakey!” There are two sides to a zipper, Each side full of little teeth – As you pull the slider upward, They’re connecting underneath! These small teeth are not for chewing (That your own teeth do with ease) – These teeth keep you warm and toasty, Even in a frosty breeze! Let’s unwrap The word “snap”: It can be a beatnik clap, Or a fish biting a scrap, Or some sudden colder weather that requires a shoulder wrap, Or a cookie made of ginger that can break in a mishap, Or an angry little yap, A quick photo of a chap, Or a football hiked behind from beneath the center’s lap Or a task so that is so easy it’s like taking a short nap! Old MacDonald had a farm (E-I-E-I-O!) And on his farm he worked quite hard (E-I-E-I-O!) He herded his sheep, and he milked his cows, Tended chickens, walked his dog, Every night went for a jog! Old MacDonald one fine day (E-I-E-I-O!) Didn’t buckle his overalls all the way (E-I-E-I-O!) How his animals laughed when his pants fell down Cows said MOO-ha! Pigs said OINK-ha! And his doggie barked a WOOF-WOOF-ha-ha! They sent a new dress to the Duchess of Veldt, A dress that was loose and too baggy, she felt. To make it fit better and make her seem svelte, The shrewd Duchess cinched up her waist with a belt! A man and his dog were out walking one day Through a field of dry grass that looked kind of like hay. Then later he petted his doggie’s soft fur Where a grass seed was stuck, a seed known as a burr. He looked at the seed – it was covered in hooks That held tight to the dog hair’s looped crannies and nooks. Inspired, he made hook and loop strips to use As buckles (called Velcro) for everyone’s shoes. The silky curls and swirls in Lara’s hair Are golden, hazel, auburn – scarcely brown – When loose, they gleam in ribbons in midair, Twisting themselves into a copper crown Of knots and tangles that a comb despair; It’s better in the wind to clip them down.
