As part of their unit on natural disasters, students in grades 5 and 6 learned about the Black Saturday bushfires, and the devastating affect these fires had on several towns in Victoria in 2009. Students created these profoundly moving landscapes using a combination of paint, charcoal, chalk pastels and oil pastels. An excellent use of colour, light and shadow to evoke mixed feelings in these pieces. Well done grade 5 and 6!
Australia's wildfires have already burned more than 17 million acres of land and are expected to continue for months.

After witnessing the aftermath of an Australian bushfire, artist Ross Taylor created a visual notebook to journal the landscape’s recovery process.
This series is produced by Argentinean photographer and Pampa Co-Founder Victoria Aguirre. For the past 10 years, Victoria has been drawn to photographing horses, mostly in the area where she grew up, known as La Pampa. These beautiful animals represent her vision of home, genuine beauty, freedom, solitude and nature.

Drawing the Australian Endangered Cockatoo, 8 pages You will download one zip file with 8 jpg and 8 pdf files There are 21 species of cockatoo in the world and 14 are in Australia. Because of the habitat loss due to logging, bushfires and floods, all the cockatoos are now endangered of extinction. I have included photos on most of the pages for reference. Most of the species presented in this activity are the Yellow Crested Cockatoo. The 8 pages are: 1. Drawing Your Way 2. Coloring p. 1 (Very simple for k-2nd students) 3. Coloring p. 2 (More detailed for more advanced or 3rd-6th grade students) 4. Bird Anatomy- students identify and label the Yellow Crested Cockatoo by comparing the illustration to the Major Mitchell Cockatoo at the top. This is a visual problem solving activity. This is geared to the older student, so consider giving direct instruction to the younger ones. ( They will have to draw the guide lines and label simple terms like wings, foot, beak, etc.) 5. Cartooning- students can trace over the cartoons or free draw in the blank boxes. Tracing helps mind-eye coordination when drawing. There are two examples. 6. 12 Cockatoo species. Students can draw whichever one/ones they want in the blank boxes. 7. - 8. Charley Harper Mr. Harper was a famous illustrator known for his modernist style of simplifying. He called it minimal realism. There are two pages for drawing in his very simple style. I could not find a cockatoo that he drew, so I included birds that will have similar characteristics to the cockatoo to emphasize drawing body shape and wings. You may want to see my 3 other Australian lessons, one free echidna, one coloring endangered animals, and one drawing endangered animals (marsupials). Look for a new one coming about reptiles. Fair Use You may want to also show your students videos about cockatoos. There are some cute ones on youtube.com. (All About Cockatoos) If you have any questions or concerns please contact me. I am happy to help. Note: When you leave feedback you can earn points on TpT for free products.
