It has been a summer full of reports of extreme weather, of unparalleled scope and severity. Among the highlights: one of the warmest years on record in the US, record-high temperatures in central and eastern Europe, the wettest summer in the UK, the heaviest rainfalls in northern India and the Philippines and the most severe droughts in the US and east Africa. In short, climate change and weather extremes are not about a distant future. Formerly one-off extreme weather episodes seem to be becoming the new normal. Weather extremes are not that extreme any more. Heatwaves, floods, droughts and wildfires are the new reality of an ever warming world. And this should not come as a surprise. Scientists have been warning for years that as the planet heats up, we will have to deal with more severe, more changeable, more unpredictable weather. The evidence is mounting that human-caused warming is pushing normal warming effects to extremes. Heatwaves have increased in duration and frequency. Some parts of Europe are now gripped by severe water shortages while other parts have suffered extreme precipitations causing floods and increased crop losses. At the Royton/Rochdale boundary at Summit, known by Rochdale as Thornham. It must be pre-1932 as the last Rochdale tram ran to Thornham in early 1931. Oldham's Summit to Hathershaw number 7 tram continued until November 1937, when replacement double deck buses also numbered 7 took over between Rochdale and Hathershaw. Just to complicate matters there were also less frequent single deck worked expresses numbered 7, which ran from Ashton to Rochdale. It all finally got sorted out when in February 1939, Ashton withdrew its Trolleybus service to Hathershaw, with the replacement number 9 bus running through to Rochdale from Ashton, with all 3 municipalities participating, and the express number 7 being withdrawn. Oldham's short workings within its own boundaries between Summit and Hathershaw continued as the M, and Rochdale's to Thornham as variously 9A and 9C, seemingly dependent on where they continued to at the Rochdale end as in Bagslate or Norden.
