2018 Topic 6: Banners and Bunting Kathleen Grace Good evening everyone, Darcy here with a new topic. This one is very much looking forward to the better weather, summery days, lighter evenings and garden parties. Our new topic is Banners and Bunting. Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 5: Nautical Colours Challenge... The winner is: Sarah B from Sazzle's Desk Email Darcy to claim your prize. [email protected] There are many names for these fluttery bits of decoration, bunting, bunts, flags, garlands, banners and pennants but whatever you call them they have been around a long time. The earliest reference I can find is from the 1600's and relates to the flags raised on a ship. On naval ships the sailor who raises the flag is still known as a 'bunt'. Though we now use the term 'bunting' to mean the whole string of flags, it was originally the word used to describe the material. An individual flag was called a 'Tammy' , derived from a French word for lightweight fabric. Modern bunting is varied and can be made from anything, from paper to card, fabric, wool, plastic wood, really anything that you can string together. We also use it in many more ways, not just on ships, I mean, how many of us have a naval ship handy? Now we use bunting on cards, canvasses, scrapbook pages, in gardens and strung up at windows or on walls. So let's have a look at some great examples. I love these pom poms, and what a fun way to get children involved, this would brighten up a bedroom or a garden. Get It Rapt Fabric is still a popular choice for bunting, and this one would be relatively easy to make. The centre image could be any shape, and could be stamped fabric instead of patterned. Blue Moon Gallery This set is a little more unusual in shape, but very effective as an autumn decoration. Follow the link in the name to see them strung up over a fireplace. Laurel Stephens This next set is a fabulous bit of recycling, the fabrics for these flags were once tablecloths. They had become holey and damaged over the years so they were cut apart and the best bits were rescued to make bunting. I adore these and will be on the lookout for old tablecloths now! How could you recreate this with stamps? I think that Kay Carley's stamps would be perfect for this vintage look. There were so many beautiful fabric sets to show you, but I was especially taken by the knitted and crochet ones. Here is a tutorial on how to make them. Bunting does not need to be strung up, how about adding it to a cushion or a pencil case. Again you could stamp your favourite images onto fabric and then use fabric glue or stitching to attach them. Josie Bunting is everywhere, and even appears on mugs. Heather Richards. If you are having a cuppa then you definitely need cake! Louise Cleaver This one is one of my favourites of the paper collections, so simple but effective, a die cutting machine or a paper punch and an old book and you are all set to make this. LaMiaCasa Staying with the heart theme, this is another fabulous idea. Bookity More recycling of old books with this paper star garland. Sunbeauty Don't forget vintage music sheets, generally bigger than reading books so you can make bigger flags. Cariadgifts If you don't fancy stringing up bunting everywhere, then cards are a much more manageable size. This one from Julie Hickey has so many wonderful details. Your individual flags do not have to be the same shape or size, try mixing them up. Julie Hickey The red lanterns on this Chinese New Year card really pop off the white background, adding them to strings really completes the composition. Wanda Flags of all sizes and shapes can work really effectively. Here tags, hearts, an envelope and traditional flag shapes are all mixed. Lea Lawson More cut outs, this time strung onto a card, minimal elements but maximum effect. Kasia Curry These mini flags cut from sparkly card are perfect for a string of bunting to wrap around a gift. A matching tag would make a lovely set. Anastasia Marie Scrapbook layouts look great with bunting, it can be themed to match your photos. Jaszmurka A mixed media canvas or art journal layout is a great place to try bunting, it can be flat in a journal or a bit more textured or 3d on a canvas. JeanKate One last mixed media piece, how sweet is this wire cage, with its fairy and bunting. Effie So many wonderful ways to use bunting, there are even more if you follow the Pinterest links. I hope these have inspired you , whether you use fabric, paper,, wood or any other wonderful substrate I hope you have fun. Can you imagine the party we could have if you all create strings of bunting, I will bring the cake! Meet one of our new blog contributors - Trisha Weekes! Trisha blogs over at myfourtrees.com. She created this charming summertime pennant banner for our shop display and is sharing her tutorial with our blog readers! Pennant Banner Tutorial by Trisha Weekes of www.myfourtrees.com Finished length-3 yards/ 9' long Supplies needed: 22- 5" charm squares or assorted fabrics cut into 5" squares 1 package of 1/4" or 1/2" double fold bias tape (your preference) Other general tools needed: Sewing machine, thread, rotary cutter, cutting mat, straight pins, scissors, bone folder or turning tool. Steps: 1-If not using precut charm squares, cut your assorted fabrics into 5" squares, using rotary cutter and mat. 2-Take each 5" charm square, fold diagonally right sides together, opposite corners, creating a triangle. Pin at corner, set aside until all are folded and pinned; or transfer folded triangle to the sewing machine and proceed with the next step. 3- Sew 1/8" seam allowance from pinned corner to folded corner, back stitch at the beginning and end. 4- Trim folded tip at an angle, cut loose threads. 5- Open the seam, iron or finger press open. Center the seam down the middle of triangle, creating a kite shape. 6- Turn inside out and with the bone folder push out the point of the pennant. 7- Fold over and tuck in the flap at the top into the triangle pocket, still centering the seam down the middle of the back. Pin and set aside until all are pinned. 8- Arrange the pennants in the order you would like them to appear, alternating prints into a repeating pattern. (This picture shows them already chain stitched together.) 9- Using a 1/8" seam allowance, sew along the top of pennant, closing the pocket. Chain stitch all the pennants together, leaving 1/2" -1" of thread in between pennants. Make sure each back seam is facing down as you sew. 10- Open the double fold bias tape, leave 10-12" for hanging ties at the beginning and end. Insert pennant, fold back over the bias tape and pin each pennant in place, again making sure all the back seams are in the back. The chain stitch should help you make the space between each pennant more even, if not cut and pin as you desire. 11- Starting at the end of the bias tape, make a 1/4" seam allowance down the length of the bias tape, making sure to enclose each pennant into the bias tape. 12- Hang and enjoy!

Welcome to my craft room, come on in! When Brett and I first started looking at house plans I knew immediately that I wanted a craft room. Back then I wasn't a mama yet and still teaching fourth-grade. I crafted some, but hadn't fully awakened my deep love and passion for art/creativity like now. Perhaps it was God whispering in my ear consistently enough for me to listen because I still knew I would need this room. And boy was I right. I remember after Anna Ruth was first born and I woke super early to paint a chalkboard yellow. It was one of my first DIY projects for this house and still a memory I have now, every detail etched. It was one of the first times I realized what a connection art, creativity, my soul, and God had. I can truly say there's been no looking back since then. I don't consider myself some kind of major artist. I just do what my mind tells me to do, I walk and dance where my soulful feet lead. I listen to my God, follow His prompts, see the world through His eyes for me....and art happens. It goes without say (but I'll say it anyway) that I lOVE my craft room. It's by far my most favorite room in the house. My own little mini retreat room. I'm slowly figuring out a "schedule" (I don't like that word, but for all you Type A personalities I'll type it) :), that works for me to make sure I get time in here....because it's where I pursue my dreams and worship my God. Both girls wake early and Anna sleeps for about an hour each day. So, in winter-that's my time at least a few days a week, to get in the craft room. I blog, edit photos, craft, journal...... Coffee and/or hot tea are regulars here.....and sometimes treats too ;) I like that my supplies are all within easy reach.... and that the walls, nooks, and crannies are filled to the brim with what makes me happy. I suppose this room is a rather simple place, much like my thinking a lot of times- I see something, I like it, I hang it. :) That bowl on the left holds heart rocks...... :) This is my hiding place. I love to go in here at night, turn on Parenthood or some good music and craft the night away. I may not do a lot of things well....but I know I was made to create. What about you?
