Use the Tug of War Strategy for making thinking visible: Over the last few years my teaching has been heavily ingrained with inquiry based learning, problem/project based learning and open ended questioning.
Recently, our hallway brain board got a bit of a facelift. We went from this.... to this... I have to admit, I was a bit sad to take down the fixed and growth mindset self-talk. We referred to them often with a lot of students. They were really powerful. But, alas, we must move on. Crystal asked her students to draw what is inside their brain. She didn't give them too many requirements. Some chose to have their page oriented landscape, though most chose portrait. Some chose to use one colour, while others had many. If you know her children, they are actually very accurate and quite insightful! At our school, we teach the Zones of Regulation school wide. Being that my students are in fourth grade, they have a fairly good understanding of the four Zones already. To refresh their memories, we read the book "The Way I Feel." Everyone folded a paper into 8 spaces. The book showcases 13 emotions, so we had more than enough room to work with the front and back combined. I read each emotion, but I didn't reveal the actual emotion. My students had to guess. Once they had guessed correctly, I projected the emotion on the SmartBoard with a corresponding Zones images. This really helped a few of my low students with spelling. Their job was to write the emotion and guess the Zone that emotion belongs in. At the end of the book, we discussed each one. Next, I assigned students a Zone. They met with the other students of the same Zone to discuss all the emotions that would belong there. They then returned to their desks where a poster was waiting for them. The task was to write in their assigned Zone and fill in the face with an expression that properly represented the Zone. Around the edges, they had to write a variety of emotions for the Zone. I'm not thrilled with these photos. I really need to bring my proper camera to school. The iPhone just isn't cutting it. I hope that these posters will be helpful to others as they pass by! I know I've referred to them a few times. Do you use the Zones of Regulation in your classroom or school? What is Community? This year's JK-Sk class spent the first part of the school year exploring the concept of community and all it entails. Community has always been part of our school life. More that just a place to live it is a place of people, voices, shared space, rituals and customs. Coming form the Latin term meaning "with gifts" the term suggests a general sense of humanity, reciprocity and a shared practice of doing good for others that comes from working together for a joint purpose. Communities help generate a shared language, rituals and customs, and a collective memory of those that join the group. www.learnactivity.com/community.htlm If we give credence to the old African proverb that “it takes a village to raise a child” then we can understand the impact that community has in helping us raise our children. Children need more that just supportive parents. As they branch outside the home they require a larger support network to grow into healthy citizens. It is a child’s right to expect the community to provide them safe neighbourhoods, adults who are good role models and dedicated teachers and politicians who keep children's rights at the forefront. When children feel a connectivity to their community they are more apt to develop a sense of civic and social responsibility. They build trust, learn to resolve conflicts peacefully and have a genuine sense of caring for others. Here is a peek at some of the children's work. The entire project is too long to post so we welcome questions. What is community. ~There are lots of houses and tall buildings. ~A community is a place where you walk to. ~There are streets. There are apartments. The Places in Our Community Our Customs and Rituals Community Celebrations Global Responsibility What we bring to the Community

This is an Author's Purpose (P.I.E.) DIY Poster! It fits nicely on a poster board and the pieces line up perfectly for an appealing look. If your students need to learn the difference between Persuade, Inform, and Entertain, this is the poster for you! You print out the pieces and mount them on a poster board, bulletin board, or directly on to your wall! For best results, print on brightly colored paper or card stock. I used Astrobrights "Brights" paper for my poster - make sure to use that kind of paper if you want your poster to look exactly like mine. I mounted mine on black poster board and then trimmed off the excess on the bottom. Hello, friends! I have created a lesson for my students and any kiddos who wish to create titled Behind My Mask! When my students return in the fall (and, yes, I said 'when' as I am very hopeful and optimistic), they will be asked to mask-up. We always seem to start out school year with a selfie so I was bummed when I thought of the idea of my students drawing themselves with their best facial feature hidden. And that's where the idea of this surprise drawing came from. Here's a video! Feel free to use and share (with credit given, please and thank you): I simply used paper, permanent marker, coloring markers and crayons. If I happen to teach virtually this fall, this lesson could also be done by my students at home. This video is a short and simple one...when teaching, I plan to share with my students a variety of self-portraits and talk a lot more about lettering, fonts, skin tones, craftsmanship, good character...the list goes on! As you can see, I'd have a hard time fitting it into a video short enough to capture their attention. So, if you use this video, feel free to add on whatever you wish to include! No one is excited about wearing a mask but...it's for our safety. And the best thing we can do for our kiddos is to put a positive spin on it, right? I hope to do that with this lesson. Enjoy!

This post is actually about an activity we did a few weeks ago. {I'm trying to catch up on all my posts!} I have seen on other blogs where teachers have students sort the books in the Scholastic catalogs that we all have lying around. I decided to incorporate that into our author's purpose is as easy as pie theme with this super fun activity. We have visited author's purpose throughout several units this year, so students were already very familiar with the concept. I had saved the Scholastic catalogs from October and gave each student one. They cut out each book cover and placed them in a pile. I picked up the pie pans at the Dollar Tree. Each table got three pie pans. The students were so excited when they came in and saw their "baking" gear laid out for them to use. I placed bulletin board paper on their desks to prevent the little book covers from falling in the floor. The cute chef hats are made from sentence strips and tissue paper. Once they had their book covers cut out, they got to sorting! We had to have several conversations throughout the activity to clear up any confusion with some of the trickier book covers. And they were having conversations of their own, debating on which pan to place some of the books. It was so interesting to hear their take on author's purpose! At the end, we pulled out some of the books and discussed whether or not we thought that pan was a good choice for the books. Some groups decided to make changes to their sort. I was so excited to hear them using the language I had taught them and applying what we had learned. If you are interested in doing this little activity, you can download the author's purpose labels by clicking on the pic below. I just printed them on cardstock and folded them. Graphics by Melonheadz This was our anchor chart students referred to all throughout the unit. The mini posters are from my Author's Purpose Unit. We were so lucky to have a snow day today! I got caught up on so much and got to stay in my sweatpants all day! Win, win! Have a great rest of the week!
There have been some huge changes around here! First, you may have noticed that I got a new look! AnD I CouLdn't be MorE in LOVE! Megan from A Bird in Hand Designs seriously went above and beyond what I asked, to create more than I even knew I was looking for! I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a brand new or blog redesign such as mine! You may have also noticed that we tweaked my title a bit and added the whole "...beyond" component as well! As those following lil ole' me know, I am no longer in the classroom with my sweet second graders, but rather, this year, I am working as the Dual Language/ELL coach for our building and have the opportunity to thus work with all grade levels and the teachers on a day to day basis :)! I am so excited to unveil this new blog design to go along with my first official post sharing some of the things I have been doing with the kiddos in my new position! This past week, I set up with each of the dual language staff members an hour long classroom visit in which I did a read aloud/lesson with the students and then stuck around to see how they interact and work with their teachers as well! I had so much fun getting to know all of the classes and wanted to share some of those lessons I did with you all! In the primary grades (K-2) I read the story "El Libro Fantástico" by Leonid Gore. This is a story about a group of animals that find a book and use it in a variety of silly ways (hat, table, house, etc.) as they are not sure what its purpose is. Then a little boy comes along and shows them that books are for "reading" and sits and reads the story to them. This is a great story to use as a review of book purpose at the beginning of the year with the little ones! Before reading, I thought I would do a little sort with the classes to activate their background knowledge. I had a blast recruiting one of our staff members to help me in taking a variety of silly photos enacting the different animal scenarios in the text. These photos were then used in the sort before reading our story! Here is what one of the finished sorts looked like: After doing our sort we of course read the story reflecting back on our sort as a reminder throughout of what the purpose of a book is! In our intermediate (grades 3-5) classrooms, I did a different activity/lesson that I thought was a little more grade appropriate :)! I selected one of my favorite poems entitled "Me x 2" written by Jane Medina. This poem is one compiled in a collection of poems from the text "Amazing Faces". Take a moment to read it...I think you will see immediately why I love it so much. Isn't it beautifully written...and I may add so incredibly fitting for all of the students and staff that I work with? After reading the poem, we had a discussion in each of the classrooms about the "Author's Message". Students worked to think-pair-share their ideas using the key phrase "The author wants me to understand that...". After sharing out as a class we then brainstormed ways in which being bilingual truly is a gift and a "blast" and created this chart together! (I apologize you can see a bit of my other chart behind!...that's what happens when you travel from room to room ;)!) I told the teachers they were welcome to hang these posters in their rooms and as the students thought of more reasons throughout the year as to "Why being bilingual is a blast..." they could add them to them! Hoping it is a good refresher/reminder of why they are taking part in the dual language program! Looking forward to sharing more with you all as the year progresses! Every week truly is a new adventure :)!
