Finally, a block that's not foundation pieced! I decided to try out a different applique method and I really, really like it. A note: Jane's block wasn't 4.5". It was probably no bigger than 3.75"-4" with a white border around it to bring it up to 4.5". I chose to make Brenda's interpretation. Cut a 6" square out of your background fabric and mark the center of the square and the positions of the outside tips of the melons using a disappearing marker. I like cutting the main fabric a little larger because there tends to be some shrinkage when appliqueing and this way I can trim it down to exactly 5" when I'm done. Trace 4 melons onto freezer paper and cut out. Lay your melon fabric face down onto your cutting table. Place a freezer paper melon shiny side up on top of it and pin. Cut out leaving about a ¼" seam allowance. You don't want this to be too small or the next step will be really hard. I bought a new toy recently. This came in VERY handy here. Using the tip of your hot, dry iron and folding the fabric back to the edge of the freezer paper as you go, iron the seam allowance to the shiny side of the freezer paper. Be careful not to iron the uncovered freezer paper. Don't worry too much about the tips. You will tuck them in when you applique. Position the melon onto the background fabric square, carefully lining up the sharp points with the marks you made. Using a hot, dry iron, iron the melon into position. Because the shiny side of the freezer paper is facing the background square it will stick. I basted it too, just to be sure. Applique the melon onto the background square, starting about 2/3 from a point. Repeat for the other three melons. Turn the block over and, using sharp pointed scissors, cut a little hole in the center back of each melon, making sure to cut through the background fabric only. Remove the freezer paper through this hole. I used a pin to tear the freezer paper a little, which have me some grip. Be careful because the freezer paper will be stuck to both the background fabric and the seam allowances of the melon. Press your block and cut it to 5" square, making sure that the place where the melons meet is in the center of the square.

**This quilt is now for sale in my Etsy shop** A few months ago I joined up with Kati's (From the Blue Chair) Color Wheel Charm Swap. I didn't have any plans for the fabrics, but I loved the idea of getting a whole rainbow of different fabrics. Then at a PMQG meeting, Anna brought in this quilt and I fell in love with it! She was inspired by this Red Pepper Quilts HST Overload quilt. Now I don't know if there is a difference officially between Half Square Triangles and Quarter Square triangles, but I made mine with what I've been taught are Quarter Square Triangles (hence the name). You simply sew around the four edges of two charms and then cut an "x" through them. Then you have 4 triangles from the square, each a quarter of the square. Clear as mud right? Enough rambling. I knew these fabrics would be perfect for that kind of values quilt and here is what I came up with. It's a lot smaller than Anna and Rita's version since I used 5" squares to start with, but I think it would make a fun baby/kid quilt. Some of the fun fabrics. I wound up using the raspberry that I had contemplated for dresden sashing and decided against. I think it works much better on this quilt. The brightness would have been too much for the dresdens. The backing is all stash - yay! And the quilting is straight line. One thing I would change if I did this again is I would press the seams open. I normally don't do that (I hate steam burning my fingers!). But I wound up with some lumpy intersections which made the quilting a little wobbly. It's nothing a good wash and fluff won't fix, but was a little frustrating in the process. We have a monthly bucket list challenge over on Cbees. This month is flying geese. The purpose of the bucket list is to broaden your methods or techniques with a selected skill. If you want to join in the fun, you can join the group HERE . It is important to know that Cbees is a sister 'activity' list of Cyberquilters, so you must be a member of Cyberquilters first, before you can join Cbees. Now, stay calm. I know you are joining two yahoo groups, but they are some of the best quilting groups on the internet and membership is FREE ! LOL I'm tempted to say they ARE THE BEST quilting groups, but I also want to avoid receiving any hate mail from members of other groups. Okay, so I've been working hard, stitching bits and pieces into my Dizzy Geese piece. This is only the center of my piece. I know, it doesnt look like it should be two days worth of work. But, hey, this center piece finishes at 6-1/2 inches square. So, you're more impressed now? LOL Now, back to the borders. I'm anxious to get this done because I have other projects that I feel ready to get started. So have a Happy Day and see you soon.
Starting a new project is always fun for a quilter. This one checks two things off my bucket list - using up scraps and a "house" quilt. So let's get organized and set up for a sixteen block quilt. The quilt patterns come in grey scale, so there is no correct color and I do not expect that any two will look alike. I'll be posting pics of my progress and I encourage you to share your progress, too. Share with the #ModaBeMyNeighbor tag on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram. Ok - I sound like a broken record, but let's start with your machine! When was the last time you popped the needleplate and cleaned the bobbin area? (Check the Blog Archive for a recent post for machine cleaning.) And new project - let's change that needle. I like a size 75/11 or 80/12 Sharp. Thread. I prefer a 50 wt for piecing. Lets go ahead and pre-wind several bobbins. Choose a thread color complimentary of your fabrics. I usually select a cream or grey/greenish leaning thread. It tends to blend into any fabric. Cutting mats, rotary cutters (change that blade - leaning harder means it's time for a new blade), scissors, and cutting rulers. Don't forget the seam ripper! And then there is that fabric.... I chose to use my extensive collection of scraps! There are lots of blog and opinions out there about what to keep, how to keep it, and how to use it! Well, I keep anything an inch and over, keep it in a basket, or sorted by color in drawers. And I am about to use it! No pre-cutting and more sorting. So I am picking as I go - colors, prints, just making it fun! And you can see..it may need a press...so set up the iron and ironing board. I have a small pressing board which reverses to a cutting mat and cordless iron right next to my machine. Reduces steps and keeps me working. So put the Crock Pot on...and let's sew! This can be used for goal setting, writing or listing what the students want to do over the summer, or a variety of other ways.
