OMG. I'm sooo tired. Exhausted. But at least, it's over! All the big rush is OVER! It was my man's birthday the last week of august, the back-to-school for my big girl (she just started kindergarten), her birthday (a family supper last weekend, her real birthday on friday and the kids birthday party yesterday) and on top of that, she had a big allergic reaction on thursday at school, she got bite by a mosquito on her cheek and it got so puffy and swollen, the school got scared and called me. I had to go to the doctor rush rush that evening to get a prescription for EPIPEN and for Benadryl so they can have the authority to do the administration of the medecine in case it happens again. But now she's ok :) It was a crazy 2 weeks to be honest. It was really hard to deal with all the new routine, on top of all the birthdays. Now it's OVER and I can BREATHE! I was really proud of all the stuff I did for my daughter's 5th birthday party! It took a lot of time, but I was really happy with the result! Same with my daughters! A lot of DIY (thanks Pinterest) but wow it was worth it! And a big big thank you to my friend Genevieve who helped me a lot to do the decorations :) Here's a few pictures ! CREEPER TOSS This one is my favorite DIY project! I saw it on Pinterest, I found it was really cool! I also created those little pockets with red and white felt, rice, glue gun and a black Sharpie. The green panel I bought it at Michael's for like 8$ CDN, it was already folded like that. BALLOONS : I did also a lot of balloons ... I used colored balloons, differents ducktape colors (bought at Michael's, pretty expensive to be honest, it was like 7 or 8$ per roll... I had to buy 3! I also bought some crepe streamers for the arms for about 1-2$ per roll (used that also for other stuffs!) Here's Reuben the pig and an Enderman : Here's a CREEPER GASP My favorite one, a Mooshroom ! The Spider (and a little black cardboard with ducktape for the eyes, just for a little Enderman face) GIFT BAGS For the gift bags, I bought/made : - See through gift bags at Walmart (2$ for the pack), - 7 boxes Minecraft Blind Box Serie 3 at Toys r Us for about 4$ each, - 7 Hershey's chocolate bar at the dollar store and I printed some Chocolate Bar Wrapper here. Just had to glue them on the chocolate bar! The kids were so excited to eat Minecraft Chocolate Bar ;) - Minecraft Bookmarks that I printed here. I bought some crafting stuff to do the strings for 2$ at Walmart. - "Thank You For Coming" paper that I got here So it came up max 5-6$ per bag, thats pretty good I find. Previous birthdays I was going to the dollar store, but it always end up costing at least 10$ per bag in order to have something decent. The kids seems really happy ! The food table I had so much fun doing this! I had a hard time finding some nice FREE printable food labels.. They were either expensive, of just not really nice... I could have done them myself, but I didn't had the time to do it this time. I found some really nice one on another Blog (Fiveinsix). She made them herself and shared them on her blog, so thank you very much! I made 2-3 myself for the one that was missing.. The only thing I didn't do, it's the cupcakes and the cake. I have zero talent so thank you very much to Christine-et-gourmantines.com for those nice goodies :) I bought all the things at Bulk Barn and the grocery store. The diamond sword were really popular! For the grass, my mom made some brownies with chocolate frosting with food coloring. NETHER PORTAL I think this one was the more popular with the kids. It was super easy and cheap to do! I got the idea from Pinterest, I just bought 2 different purple crepe streamers and a black one, and I used construction paper for the NETHER banner. Happy Birthday Banner I also found a nice free printable banner here. I printed the letters, cut them and glue them on a thin cardboard (the paper where rolling up, so I had to find something more strong) and I used some green rope and a glue gun to fix the banner. Pretty simple! OTHER DECORATIONS I also put other regular decorations, I used a lot of crepe streamers in the Minecraft color theme. * Sorry for the bad lighting for the one on the window! ;) * And now, for the games! I had a lot of fun to do that too! Minecraft Mask I bought a big black cardboard (same one as the Creeper Toss!) and cut both side in 3 (it was making perfect squares) for a total of 6. I also bought a pack of wood sticks at Walmart (I used the glue gun to fix the stick on the back of the cardboard) *I used the middle of the cardboard to avoid any waste, to do the Enderman, the face next to the spider before* I just used a knife to do 2 holes for the eyes. I also cut a lot of little squares construction papers of differents colors and put them in differents bowls. I cut them the size for a perfect fit 8x8 like the template. I bought 6 small glue stick and a pack of wood sticks at Walmart. I made a table just for that, and it was a big hit! I printed the templates for the faces (I can't find the website, I'm sorry! But it can easily be found on google images for all the faces you want!) And for the last game... The Little Piggy! It was also a big hit !! Easy to make (just research pictures on Google Image, or just look at mine hehe!) and really fun! I used felt and glue! Super fun for the kids!

Pikachu cake - a super easy DIY tutorial for how to make a Pikachu cake
It's fun to watch Tristan grow up playing the same favorites we used to play when we were kids. Super Mario mania seems to have taken over again, and the bug has hit Tristan! When we asked him what kind of birthday party he wanted, it was obvious - Mario. After researching Mario party items, I came to found out not only were items scarce, but terribly expensive. So my husband, my friend Jewell, and I decided to make most everything on our own. And I have to say it turned out awesome! Tristan and his friends had a blast, and we had a blast creating everything. In the words of Matt; "this is the party I always wanted!" We made customized Mario & Luigi hats using fleece and lots of thread & patience; We used house hold items such as a large plate and a cottage cheese top to cut out the shapes. They turned out amazing: As you can see, my stitches weren't that great at first; it took me a few tries to get them perfect:) Jewell was much better than I was at this! It took us over 2 months to complete these. We made about 20 of them. Oh! Oh! Oh! I completely forgot about the invitation. Tristan loved watching me paste him into the pipe! We chose to have the party at a rented space in downtown Ventura called MovieTown, because they have a HUGE big screen TV and the kids could play all the video games they wanted. We used random, small boxes that I got from work and covered them in red construction paper and drew lines to make bricks for decoration. The cupcakes were simple chocolate and vanilla with vibrant food coloring mixed in the white frosting. We made our cupcake toppers and Jewell printed them on cardstock, cut them out and popped them on lollipop sticks. You're welcome to print out the original, the link is here. Next, I made Goombas! These were Tristan's favorite. These were really easy to make. Go to the dollar store and buy a package of styrofoam bowls and a package of plastic cups. Paint them both brown, and then hot glue the cup (upside down) into the deep part of the bowl. Then, get black and white construction paper and cut out the shapes for the teeth, eyes, and eyebrows. The kids had a blast "stomping" the Goombas at the end of the party!! We did little embellishments like drawing a mustache on the cups, and providing stick-on mustaches for the kids (and adults!). Jewell spent HOURS on this thing! Pin the mustache on Mario was another game we played. And Tristan won! :) (if you're wondering where I got his short, I had it customized by Made Cute Just 4 U, an awesome shop over at Etsy. I highly recommend them! And then, last but not least... The Mario Mystery Box Pinata!! We made this out of a large box, cut the bottom out and wrap it in yellow construction paper. Then cut out a question mark from white construction paper, glue it on, and then outline it with a sharpie. The bottom of the box has about 10 Trader Joe's bags (the brown bag type) stapled together and then glued to the box. This made it so the kids could "punch" the bottom just like Mario! We filled the box with gold coins (of course) and lots of candies and goodies. The kids loved it. Another easy thing I did was make the goody bags from brown paper bags and again, construction paper (all things you can find at the dollar store). We filled them with Mario-related things and the kids used them during the mystery box pinata. Overall it was an super-fantastic-Mario day! I still can't believe I have a 5 year old.... Lastly, here are some videos of the day!
photos via beth & company As you could probably tell from yesterday’s post, I get pretty excited about fun new ways to pass the time with the kiddos. Birthday parties are no exception. In fact my birthday party philosophy has evolved over the years from picture pretty to laid back fun to party-not-entirely-necessary. Which …
This post contains affiliate links. Well hello there! Oddly, this is my first Halloween post of the season! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays I can't believe I let a few Halloween themed blog posts slip away from me. I love watching scary movies, just not the nightmares. I like the idea of haunteds house, but I don't like when people scare me. I'm a big ol' scaredy cat, so, warning to new acquaintances: do NOT got with me to a haunted house. EVER! I'm horrible. Alright, so since that's out of the way let's get to why you're really here- MINECRAFT! My son's first character choice for Halloween was Minecraft Steve. We didn't find any costumes within our budget, so through a quick Google search my husband found this tutorial showing how to create one. My youngest son liked playing with brother's so much that I ended up making him one and a tutorial to go along with it. :-) The file available to download on the site mentioned above is sized 17" x 48" so I edited it to be printed in 4- 11" x 17" sheets (downloadable files below) at your local print shop. I went to my local UPS Store to purchase the 2 boxes and the prints and paid $7 and change. *Note: If you don't already have majority of the items listed below, as I did, then you may be better off buying the pre-made box from Amazon here (not an aff. link) and receive free 2-day shipping as a Prime member or with a $25+ purchase. About time you add up the costs of everything on the list to DIY, you'll be paying the same price or more. Buuut, since this may be last minute for you, this is definitely your best bet to ensure it's ready in time for Halloween! You will need: 4 prints: Head-1 | Head-2 | Head-3 | Hair (printed at UPS Store) 10" x 10" x 10" box (purchased from UPS Store) Scissors Paper Trimmer (optional) Exacto Knife Spray Adhesive (optional) Glue stick Clear packing tape **I highly suggest you complete this project outdoors if you plan to use spray adhesive. Let's begin, shall we? Box and print prep: Assemble the box and tape the top of the box closed using the packing tape. Cut off the bottom fold flap that will be the front of the face. Fold the other three fold flaps inside the box. Remove the white edges from the 11" sides of the prints using your scissors and/or paper trimmer. *Cut off all edges of the top of the hair. I left the 17" top and bottom edges on all pages EXCEPT the top of the hair. The video below shows the rest of this tutorial. Enjoy! :-) SHARE ON PINTEREST

My baby is 4!! Tomorrow is the officialy day, but we celebrated today. Today was so wonderful. After 4 years of putting on birthday parties, we finally got a system down. The planning and preparation were nearly seemless. Especially compared to the last 3 years where everything just seemed hectic and very last minute. The key, it turns out, is to buy party supplies (except food) and plan out all the games the week before the party. Then you have a full week in case you forget something or need a little extra time. Except for spending the last three nights in a row making my own paper mache pinata, everything was pretty stress free! It also helps when you decide not to cook and just buy everything from the store. This was the first year Jacob was really old enough to enjoy party games. So I went a little crazy. But it was a good crazy. First we silly-stringed bad guys. Then we had a spiderweb obstacle course-complete with a finish line ribbon. I wasn't sure how this one would turn out but it was a HUGE hit! The kids loved climbing through the "webs" (white yarn). Then a spider bean bag toss. After cake, we had a surprise guest! This was the highlight of the party. The other day I asked Jacob if we should invite Spiderman to his party. He told me, in a disappointed voice, that Spiderman was not real. Well...the LOOK on his face when he opened the door! He was ecstatic! A big shout out to my little brother who made a GREAT Spiderman! I was so worried Jacob would recognize him, but it went so perfectly! Then we did the pinata. It was a little sad to see three hard days full of work unravel in two short minutes. Next year I may need to add a couple more layers of newspaper.... The party started at 11:30am, which was perfect because when guests left around 2, we still had the afternoon to hang out and relax. Today was so wonderful! We have been blessed with such great friends and family. On a typical day, it's easy for me to look around our house and count all the things we don't have. But, standing in the middle of the large group that had gathered in our tiny (950 square foot) house, all I could think about was all the things we do have. And those are the things that matter. It's so touching to see your "village" come together and celebrate the life of your child.
