Designing quilts for publication is a funny thing. Magazines work so far ahead that sometimes, if you're not the one making the quilt, you forget all about a design until it appears on the printed page. And even then you might not recognize it as your own. That's what happened with Briar Rose in the

I have a finished quilt to show! I actually finished this a while ago and forgot to share! I gave it away and I guess it slipped my mind. I love Heather Ross, so when she released her Briar Rose line (first in a LONG time), I couldn't wait to put it to use. Pattern found in this book. (as a sidenote, I can't buy EVERY quilt book out there. There are so many now, and most are good. I usually check them out from my local library first and if I love it, then I consider buying it.) The pattern is a modern take on the log cabin. If you look closely, you can see each block is made up of small log cabin blocks. I quilted it in circles, first seen here, except I tried to do it free-motion, and it's kind of sloppy. I feel a little bad about that, but not bad enough to not give it away. Bound in a pretty orange, (looks like mac and cheese), which worked perfectly with the other prints. The strawberries from this line are my favorite, so I used the pink ones on the back.

Pattern: Briar Rose by England Street Quilts www.englandstreet.blogspot.com.au Material: Batik Jelly Roll Linking to: WIP Wednesday by Freshly Pieced and Let's Bee Social by Sew Fresh Quilts I haven't blogged for quite a while as all I seem to be doing is chasing my tail and starting projects but not finishing them (naughty girl) When I started to quilt, I said to myself, only have two projects on the go at once, but somehow there are so many wonderful things to make I got lost along the way. Of course going on an overseas holiday to Canada and USA for 6 weeks didnt help my sewing projects at all. I dragged poor hubby to as many quilt shops as I could find and even came home with another project quilt to make of Alaskan animals, as my souvenir. Sometimes I am just like a Bower Bird and attracted to bright colours and before we left, I did manage to finish a quilt top from a batik jelly roll that had caught my attention. I loved the mix of colours and teeming it with a white homespun, worked out quite well. I asked my girlfriend Mandy from www.seamssewtogether.blogspot.com if she wouldn't mind quilting some feathers in the white crosses while we were away and then I forgot about it and went about enjoying the holiday. Mandy messaged me to say it was finished and then all I wanted to do was see it. She wouldn't send me a photo, said it wouldn't do it justice and she was right...... Never in a million years did I think my humble quilt top would turn into a beautiful work of art but IT DID. What a transformation !! Mandy did a wonderful job with her long arm machine and I think the bright colours really make it POP and grab your attention. You can check out Mandys blog to get her explanation on the technical side of the quilting but I just love it. All I need to do is stop looking at it and put the binding around the edge, then I can begin to use it. Thanks Mandy, it was a good team effort xxxxx

Hi! I am back with this quilt and I can say it is finally finished! I put it aside for quite sometimes, after quilting it a quarter way. Then I moved house, and haven’t got the mood to start quilting it again in my smaller sewing space (I shall share with you soon) until last
My husband and I have a little joke: "75 Tokyo Drive: that's where toads come to die." (Not our real address.) We have many toads in our yard, and our oldest two kids just love them! They have no fear of little critters like I do. Sadly, though, despite our kids' enthusiasm for "caring" for the toads, the toads inevitably end up dead. I'll spare you the details, only to say that our new rule is, "We look with our eyes and not with our hands." Enter: Heather Ross's latest fabric line, "Briar Rose." It is the perfect way for my oldest daughter, Elyse, to have toads to her heart's delight and to keep them "alive!" (Not to mention crickets and honey bees, too.) I purchased a layer cake at a deal, then let it taunt me. For weeks and weeks, there it sat, and I just could not figure out what to do with it. This fabric is just too perfect, and nothing seemed good enough. Meanwhile, a little lady's sixth birthday was creeping closer and closer! So, back to my default: patchwork. I left half of the pieces in the 10 by 10 inch size, then quartered the other half of the pieces. I stitched in some half-inch sashing all around, added a border or two, and I was done. I like to let good fabric speak for itself. First up: the aforementioned toads. This photograph really does not do the illustration justice. Of course. That said, I just LOVE the little daddy toad helping his baby wade into the water. The baby toad left his romper on the picnic blanket, see? It's these little details that make the illustration so wonderful. And the other little toad learning to dive? Too cute. Not to mention the toad that is swimming with his child on his back. And the details of the picnic? Oh, I could go on. I think one reason I love this illustration so much is because it reminds me of a happy time our (then little) family had when we lived in Arizona. We had recently been reunited after 5 1/2 months apart for my husband to do his Army training. We decided to take a trip to the Grand Canyon and its environs. One day, we were driving through Oak Creek Canyon on our way to see the red rocks of Sedona. We stopped to picnic at a place called the Banjo Bill picnic area. Henry was only 1 1/2 and Elyse only 2 1/2 and we hadn't planned for water, but they wanted to wade. So I just undressed Elyse down to her underwear and let her go in! (Henry was a bit more timid and was content to keep dry.) Well, we just lingered there and lingered some more, enjoying the water, the delight of the children in splashing, the light blazing through the trees and striking the water and the rocks. My favorite picture from that day... see the glee on Henry's face? What I remember most of all, is how we enjoyed just being together. It was one of the happiest days of my life. This toad print reminds me of that day, and I really wanted Elyse to have plenty of those little guys, so I did the backing in it. Elyse also loves crickets. Again, when we lived in Arizona, she would chase those around the backyard. Catching and releasing, all evening long. Such lovely weather, such lovely memories. See my mistake in the quilting? I tried to greet Anne's husband and daughter... while still quilting! Clearly a no-no. Next up: honeybees! Look, this one is carrying pollen in her apron. In her apron ! So clever and so cute! I love it. And this one is knitting with a baby in a basket beside her. Oh my. Homemaking bliss. Despite all these adorable creatures, I think that the strawberries on green are my absolute favorite. I could look at these sweet illustrations all day long. Did I actually just say, "I like to let good fabric speak for itself," and then ramble on and on? Typical me. Well... shall I tell you about the quilting? It's my first time "longarming" it! I really enjoyed it! I chose these figure eights, sometimes called the Denyse Schmidt Scroll. It was so much easier than wrangling this baby through the very small throat space of my home machine. I think the middle of the quilt looks great, but I had a hard time doing just half the loop to finish the last row. You can see messed up loops and the bubbles below. Then Anne saved the day by offering to stitch Elyse's name into the quilt. How wonderful! Then I got back to my specialty: ruining the final touches. Oops. All that to say: despite my quilting mistakes, I love this quilt. Better yet, the birthday girl loves it, too; I'm so glad that this one is staying in the family! (Linking up at Crazy Mom Quilts and Needle and Thread Thursday.)

A few months ago I started another quilt for Jill. Well, when I started it I actually didn't have a plan for it. I just didn't like seeing my pretty stack of Briar Rose (and coordinating solids) from Amanda's shop just sitting on my shelf. I'm not a hoarder. It didn't take me long to decide that some kind of square-in-square block was what I wanted to use, and since I had just made some Lemon Squares blocks for a bee-mate I went ahead and used a slightly modified version of that pattern for Jill's quilt. I actually bought this pink Minkee when I was pregnant with Jill with the intention of making her something with it before she was born. Obviously that didn't happen, but at the same time I also bought that pretty yellow gingham I used for the binding. I did get a crib sheet made out of it before Jill was born so I wasn't a total slacker. I think the gingham looks perfect here with the sweet Briar Rose prints. This is another quilt that I quilted on my mom's longarm while there for Thanksgiving. I'm actually really happy with my quilting on this one, except for the way that darn Minkee was pulled through with the stitches. I use a Microtex needle on my home machine when I quilt with Minkee and rarely have that issue. I used the thinnest needle mom had but it wasn't enough I guess. It really doesn't bother me that much, and I'm hoping that maybe after it goes through the wash it will settle back in a bit. The quilt finishes at roughly 48" square. A good size for Jill to use in her crib and for the next couple years. I did use a layer of white flannel as batting in this one so it will definitely keep my sweet girl warm!
