Let me tell you...making a breakout box for your class to use is no small task! But, I had a lot of fun making it and I am hoping my students will have a lot of fun with it too. I am planning to use this as a first day activity in my Calculus class to review some necessary skills and avoid the first day here are the rules speech. In order to make a Breakout Box, you first need to gather your supplies. There is a company you can order a box with supplies from [Breakout Edu], but I wanted to buy my own supplies and make a couple of changes. Here are the supplies I used (with some links to amazon if you're interested): 1) 16 inch toolbox - I bought this from WalMart 2) Directional Lock {Amazon Directional Lock} 3) Hyper Tough Tool Bag - I bought this from WalMart 4) Word Lock {Amazon Word Lock} 5) Vaultz Binder Locking Pouch {Vaultz Locking Binder Pouch} 6) Blank Jigsaw Puzzles {Amazon Jigsaw Puzzles} 7) Black Light Flashlights {Black Light Flashlight} 8) Invisible Ink Pens {Amazon Invisible ink pens - set of 3} I ended up buying enough to make 4 complete breakout boxes. It was expensive, but I am hoping that I will be able to use these supplies several times a year. To start this activity, I will hand each group of students a card with directions, 4 problem cards, and the locked toolbox to begin. Students solve the 4 problems which will give them the combination to the first lock which will be on the large toolbox. Inside the large toolbox, students will find the Hyper Tough Tool Bag and 5 additional problems on cards. Students solve these problems and unscramble the letters so they can figure out the combination to the word lock. Inside the Hyper Tough Tool Bag, students will find 3 final problems on cards and the Vaultz Binder Locking Pouch. Students solve these 3 problems to determine the combination the Binder Pouch. Inside the binder pouch, students will find a jigsaw puzzle they need to put together along with a black light flashlight. Students put the puzzle together and then use the black light to read the secret message on the puzzle which is written in invisible ink. The invisible ink tells the students where they should go to get their treat. I am giving candy bars as the treat :)
So, I started a new STEM adventure and I really had no idea how my students might react. After each class completed this little task I asked for some feedback - which is kind of a dangerous thing to do with fifth graders. Nevertheless, I asked and here is what I got, “After three years of

Introduction As I’ve mentioned elsewhere pretty much anything can be made into a puzzle. With a bit of work any everyday activity can be turned into a puzzle. While you’re getting started – it’s probably easiest to use / repurpose puzzles that you’ve seen in newspapers or used in gameshows or in mobile Apps. You can even go and buy a children’s spy book for inspiration. I would recommend testing individual puzzles in isolation with willing playtesters before included it in your Escape Game.

An extremely clever puzzle that at first glance might not seem to fit in an Escape Room. Once you start to understand it a little more; however, you will see it has a lot of Escape Room potential. For each solution there is a unique combination of numbers which occupy the corner positions. These numbers can then be used for a code or to help solve another part of your Escape Room. The Fable: In the old west, the 78 soldiers manning the parapets at Ft. Fearless were surrounded by 119 Indians. Their only hope was in making the Indians think there were more soldiers in the fort. Major Burns reasoned the Indians might count the men in corner parapets twice as they could be seen from two adjacent sides. He arranged the men so there were 22 men visible from each side; thus seemingly 88 men. Not enough... he repositioned them such that 23 were visible on each side… still not enough… Before long he found he could position his men such that from 22 to 30 were visible on each side. When he finally put 30 on each side the Indians thought left as they thought they were outmanned with 120 men in the fort. How did he do each combination of 23 to 30 men per side? Your goal: Position the blocks numbered 1 thru 12 such that 22 men appear on each side; then reposition them for 23 men on each side, then 24 etc… up to 30 on each side. This is a puzzle of moderate degree of difficulty; appropriate for ages 10 and up. Achieving the 22 or the 30 men per side challenge are the easiest to accomplish and may be very appropriate for Escape Rooms. When solved, the 4 numbers in the corners are unique and could be used as part of a clue or combination. This is an old puzzle, to the best of our knowledge last seen from Peterson Mfg from 1975. We have reproduced this in a particularly nice format . It is an all wood construction with a base and cover. All text and numbers are deeply laser engraved. Playing instructions are also laser engraved on the frame. Measures about 7” square in the frame. Comes with written solutions for all 9 puzzles. Made in our Hudson, FL shop.
