Hello friends! What an important time of the day guided reading is! It can be a difficult time to plan for, but it is so important to get our new readers reading out loud and reading with a purpose. Before you start your guided reading time, it also important to have an instructional focus selected. During guided reading your focuses may include: a comprehension skill, vocabulary words, and word work. One thing I am guilty of neglecting to teach is decoding strategies. Decoding strategies are important tools that allow students to take some kind of action when they come to an unfamiliar word. Sometimes students come to an unfamiliar word and are just "stuck." Most often, it's our struggling readers that don't use strategies. In order to help students grow as readers, we need to teach them strategies! My favorite way to start off guided reading, is by choosing a strategy to focus on. The strategy that you choose, may depend on the text you are reading. If the story you are reading has high frequency sight words, a predictable pattern, and lots of picture clues, you may want to focus on the eagle eye strategy. If your story has a lot of words with vowel teams, digraphs, or another phonetic concept, you may want to focus on chunky monkey. As the teacher, you're the expert on what your students need! :) All of the strategies are helpful so you really can't go wrong! We typically spend about 5-8 minutes working on the strategies before we begin reading. The time you spend working on them may depend on your group's grade level and how long they can focus. Before you start using your strategies, you need to get the cards organized! I store my cards in the Recollections Color Photo & Craft Keeper! Click the photo to grab the storage container! If you don't want to purchase the craft keeper, you can always hole punch them and store them on rings! Before my students start reading, I show them the strategy we are focusing on as an "I can" statement" I explain to them what they will do and how to use the strategy. I attached this to the bottom of the lid of my craft box. Once I have chosen my strategy, I pass out the task cards to students. There are several different levels to each so be sure to choose the phonetic concept your students need practice on. Choose the level that is right for your students! A little about each strategy... You may wondering how each strategy works. Check out each strategy below or check out the video to see them in action! Stretchy Snake Have the student tap each dot and say the letter/letters sound. They can drag their finger across the arrow to blend the word. Lips the Fish Have the student say the first sound of the word. Then, they can slide their finger to say the rest of the word. They can read the word altogether at the bottom. Flippy Dolphin I’ve included a quick “warm up” where students will quickly tap the dots and read the short and long vowel sounds. Have the student read the word using both the short and long vowel sound. They can decide which vowel sound makes sense and matches the picture. They will then use a dry erase marker to circle the answer, long or short. It will be pretty easy for students to read the word since it matches the picture but it really gets them thinking about short and long vowel sounds! Chunky Monkey Give the child a dry erase marker and have them circle familiar “chunks” or parts of the word that they know. I have organized the cards by short, long, and irregular vowels. Many of the words will be longer since it is easier to use these strategy on longer words with more “chunks.” Skippy Frog Cut out the frogs (included) and glue them on popsicle sticks. Have students cover up the end or entire underlined word when reading the sentence. After they have read the sentence, they will uncover the word and reread the entire sentence to decode the underlined word. Students may be able to solve the word using the context of the sentence or, if needed, they can use previously learned strategies. Tryin' Lion First, students will read the sentence. Then, they will read both word choices and decide which word makes sense. They will circle the word with a dry erase marker. Eagle Eye Students will read the sentence and use the picture clue to read the underlined word or words. I hope this was helpful! When I posted a couple of my products on Teachers Pay Teachers this summer, I had not yet used them myself. I had brainstormed the ideas over the summer for my new kiddos! I knew that I would be receiving more kids than any other year (and no additional adults) and I needed more ways to incorporate independent work for my students to keep them busy and learning all day (which prevents boredom and temper tantrums!). For my students with higher academic and social skills, I was not too worried...I have plenty of stuff to keep them busy and they are great at adapting to new activities (check out this post for what my higher academic students do at Reading/Math Centers). However, for some of my lower functioning students independent work is harder to come up with and new activities do not go over very well (this group of students in my class struggles a lot with any sort of change). As you probably know if you have read my blog, I love using work in binders for my students. It keeps the work predictable and lets students know exactly how much work they have to complete. It also allows for switching different work in and out without the student feeling like too much has changed. I store these binders in a little plastic bin. I put a piece of velcro on the side of the binders....that way when a student is bringing their schedule picture to the station, they attach it right to the binder they are responsible for completing. This is what is in my reading binders for students who can match letters. This is from my Functional Spelling Product on TPT. The product also comes with pages that have blank boxes, for kids who are beginning to spell words on their own. I store the pieces in a labeled baggie on the back of the previous page. I use these in my reading binders as well. This is from my product Sorting Pictures by Letter from A-Z on TPT. Each kid only has 3 or 4 letters worth of pages in their binder and we switch them around every couple weeks. Again, pieces are stored in a baggie (I ask for these as school supplies in the beginning of the year since we use so many). For the example below, students sort pictures of alligators to the left side page and apples to the right side page. I also have some students who are not yet able to match something as complicated as a letter and cannot yet sort. For these students, in their reading binders, I use matching pages from my Easy Matching product on TPT. When I made this, I tried to make each item on the pages (there are only 4-6 pictures per page) a different color to help aid in visual discrimination for some of those beginning matchers. Not all of my students make it to my "Math Centers" station which takes place in the afternoon because we get so busy with inclusion and functional skills stations (life skills classroom, science lessons, social time, drama time, etc.) Don't worry, we still work on math...just not independently as often as reading. So, these binders are a bit less developed. Right now, I am just using pages from my product Patterns and Beginning Math Skills on TPT. Students match patterns in blank boxes below a given pattern. I tried to use picture of common items/things my students like to make this activity more engaging. That was kind of a long post...happy Tuesday!

Well, I think I pulled it off. And since there's no reason for me to hoard my design, I thought I'd share it with ya'll, and hopefully you can get some good use out of it! I've made them available in both black/white and in color. The original image is HUGE, so you could get it printed on poster board if you wanted to, and make a massive version. I used a hot glue gun to assemble it. Also, there is purposefully a hole in the bottom, to make it easier to string the balloons through the roof. You can easily cover it up if you don't like the way it looks by tracing around the bottom of the house once it's finished:) ALSO, I RECOMMEND WAITING TO GLUE THE BOTTOM FLAPS TOGETHER TILL VERY LAST! (Otherwise, you're going to have one heck of a time putting the roof on. Just sayin'). If you're wondering how heavy it was... Around 1 1/2 oz. And if you're wondering how many balloons it takes to lift 1 1/2 oz... It takes about 9, 11-inch balloons filled with helium. We used ten, and it soared even with a bit of extra weight on it! So be careful, cuz one little slip and your cute little UP house could be on it's way to Paradise Falls! It takes some brain work, putting it all together. Unfortunately, I didn't number the flaps or color coat them, or make it in any way easy to follow. I apologize for that, but I did make a little map that will HOPEFULLY help! If you have any questions on the assembly though, just let me know:) Good luck and enjoy! I received an inquiry about the A pieces connecting to house section #3. There are two crease marks missing, that will make ALL the difference in fitting them together: First off, there needs to be two bends on this piece. Straight across from where the blue siding ends on each side. (I purposefully did NOT make a crease line, because I didn't like the look of a black line through the fish scale siding, but it's kind of a necessary step!) And another bend on the top line of the white siding. The second error I made is this: there should be a crease line like so: (I penciled it in). Then bend it under. And this is how they fit together: Hope that helps! SECOND FIX! Hi there! I finally got to putting another little house together, and found that uhhhh yeah... #7 is a piece of work! I have no idea how I ever got it to work the first time around, but I'll show you what I did to fix it, and have updated the printable version as well. First: I snipped the whole thing in half, like so. And then made a little slice on the bottom left piece (if you look closely you can see it). Then I slid it right into place. The other piece I glued to the inside, just on the scalloped edge along the bottom so it leaves room to slide the roof between the siding and the #7 roof pieces. It should look something like this: And then all you have to do is put the roof on, it's not perfect (nothing about this little house IS perfect, I'm not a professional-anything, but it's still cute all the same!) I hope that clears things up, and I'm SO sorry for the confusion/frustration.
