Recently, students at Thomas were lucky enough to be able to host illustrator/author Steve Harpster. Steve is a local illustrator who does free (can you believe that?!?) school visits in Ohio and free electronic visits around the world. He has illustrated over 100 books including many how to draw books. Steve sent several of his books in advance and my students couldn't wait to see him. Steve's presentation was primarily a drawing lesson. He drew many characters from his books. Students (who brought paper and pencil) drew right along with him. Watching 125 students all drawing something at once was priceless. It was the art version of watching a crowd at a tennis match. Everyone would look up at the screen to see the next step in the drawing. Then they would all look down to work on their own paper. Then the would look up, then down, then up, then down, then up, then down. I think you get the point. Pure fascination. Steve drew on his tablet which was projected on the wall. It was incredibly easy for all students to follow along. My students were extremely engaged with the presentation and were incredibly excited and motivated about how good their drawings were. All of the drawings are based around letters or numbers, so it's a totally different style than what they typically see in drawing books. I saw more successful drawings with Steve's presentation and books than I've ever seen from any other drawing book. If you're interested in having Steve Harpster visit your school, I would highly recommend it. More information about his school visits (along with drawing lessons, printables, and other materials) are on his website.

Supplies needed: Acrylic dabbers, photocopy of an image, water spritzer bottle, paintbrush, card stock, craft sheet and heat tool (optional) Take the lid off the dabbers and brush the paint onto the card stock, ensure you get a good coverage Take your photocopied image ( remember that you will get a reverse of the image, so don't use bold words), flip it over and place it in the acrylic. Lightly press it down making sure it's smooth and not wrinkled Leave to air dry for at least 15 minutes and then if you wish give it a blast with the heat tool Only move onto this step when you are sure your paint is completely dry Take your water filled spritzer bottle, spray the back of the paper no more than two squirts, you don't want it too wet Next start to rub the paper very gently with your finger Keep rubbing and extra spritzing if you need too Eventually you will get rid of all the paper, but it does take a bit of patience as you have to be careful not to wet it too much and rub the image away You can do exactly the same on a canvas Apparently the paint in the acrylic dabbers is slightly different to other acrylics as it is more chalky and that's why the transfers work best with these paints. But you can use other mediums. I tried it with Jo Sonia's background paints but didn't get such a good effect

Scrap 4 Art. In my opinion... one of Toledo's Best Kept Secrets. Located at 1501 Adams Street in downtown. They collect miscellaneous items and sell them (on the cheap) to people like me. Now here's a sign that I just love to see. Fill a bag for $3.00! My kind of shopping. My family waited in the back room where creativity blossoms. Thanks for your patience boys...now get busy and make something! I've seen this done before...just never actually being used as a cork board. Yep, you can find cork here...possibly the framing. they specialize in the unusual. My reason for coming...this huge shelf filled with piles of fabric swatches. I think I'm dreaming...ZZZ... Zafus and Zabutons and zo much more! I loved this window treatment. This just might find its way into my craft room. If you look closely you will see that it is made from household "trash" (treasure), i.e., lids, caps, colored plastic thing-a-ma-jigs. Hippie cool. Here is the nice woman who was helping me...she is the artist of the following zipper tree. Yep...if you look close you will see it is made entirely of old zippers. Love it! Talk about cool, they conduct classes for different groups turning trash into art! There are others like me...those of my kind. Here I thought I was the only one who couldn't throw "things" away. Brought a tear to my eye. One of my favorites. Hands Around the World. A bottle cap work of art! This pole puppet greets you at the door. I couldn't leave without getting her picture. And... I can't sign off without giving a BIG THANKS to Rolinda , a new friend at Harmony in Life for sharing this little gem with me. It is people like you who make people like me so very happy! Thanks for the gift of fabric as well...it was...such a Rolinda thing to do. Creating Awaits!
