Our zoo is home to this beautiful and rare white buffalo named Blizzard. I was lucky enough to be passing by at feeding time and got a good show as the herd was chowing down. I wasn't actually in the zoo itself, this is on the out-skirts of the park near a parking lot. The collage below shows Blizzard when he first arrived at the zoo 5 years ago (top left) at the age of one (I found that picture on a website) and there is much symbolism associated with a white buffalo and the native culture. His name comes from the obvious fur color and more notibly due to the fact he arrived in our city during a blizzard in 2006. The buffalo is also a provincial symbol in Manitoba.
So…since I get a lot of emails from the tenkara-curious asking me what sort of flies I use when going tenkara fishing, I figured I’d show you…and heck, even give you the recipe, should you feel industrious and decide that you absolutely must tie some yourself. Look Beavis…It says ASS-IDUOUS. Hee hee. Before I get into … Continue reading Tying My "Secret Weapon" Tenkara Kebari Fly →
I was born and raised in Western New York, about 90 miles from Buffalo, where chicken wings are pretty much considered a food group. There, you can find wings in virtually every casual restaurant and pizza shop around. That is not the case in Atlanta, where my husband and I recently relocated to. My friend Larissa (a transplant to Florida from our hometown of Rochester) shared her method for cooking wings with me, and I decided to give it a try. For the sauce, I used The Spice House's traditional Harissa and a touch of honey, which gave the wings...

A bright and gorgeous print by well listed artist Wilhelmina Godfrey. This work is titled "Bright Dream" and was executed in 1967. Her pieces are quite rare and this Summer The Benjaman Gallery will be hosting a retrospective of her work showcasing the different mediums she employed including print making. Born in Philadelphia but raised and educated in Buffalo, Wilhelmina Godfrey was a painter, weaver, printmaker, teacher, crafts consultant, and writer. She was a graduate of painting from the Albright Art School, attended the Art Institute of Buffalo, and studied at the School for American Craftsmen at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She taught painting and drawing at the Michigan Avenue YMCA in 1951. She became interested in weaving in 1958 after being inspired by an exhibition in Rochester. She organized State University of New York at Buffalo’s weaving program and was a teacher at their Creative Craft Center from 1967 to 1970. In addition, she taught art classes at the Community Center for St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. In 1974 she received a fellowship to study at the prestigious Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. Godfrey’s paintings often depicted the African American experience of life on Buffalo’s East Side, and her weavings usually reflected African motifs. As teacher and artist, Godfrey won respect from the arts community and served as a role model for young African Americans. In 1979, she presented at the National African American Crafts Conference Symposium. Her presentation was titled “The Negro Slave Crafts Workers of North and South Carolina.” The Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County and Greater Buffalo Chamber of Commerce acknowledged Godfrey’s lifetime achievements with the bestowal of an Individual Professional Arts Award in 1990. During that same year, Medaille College presented an exhibition of her work. less

This baby quilt is machine pieced and machine quilted. The repeated Star Block, sometimes called Sister's Choice, sets the colors scheme like the dusty Sturgis landscape. The quilting swirls like the wind over the dry grass. My dad was born and raised in Sturgis so he grew up in the shadow of Mato Pata (or as he knew it - Bear Butte). His family often picnicked near by a cool spring there. As I grew up, we visited as often as we could, so images of the Black Hills, rolling plains and buffalo appear in my Quilts whenever I find them in fabric. This quilt reflects the Native American culture that first celebrated this beautiful place. The colors are subtle in this quilt. The top, back and batt are all 100% cotton. It is machine pieced and quilted by Denise. It is crib sized and could also be used as a small throw on a sofa or side chair. 34 x 46” Free shipping.
