De vele tekeningen en foto's maken het echter mogelijk toch veel uit Il manuele complete del Ricamo Estense te begrijpen. Geen moeite kostte het om het afwerk randje op blz. 109 te maken aan de hand van de tekeningen en foto's. Met toestemming van de auteur laten we je zien hoe je het randje van het mauve naaldenboekje maakt: Bereid de stof als volgt voor: Tel van de buitenkant van de stof naar binnen: laat 10 draden staan, trek er 1 uit, laat er drie staan, trek er 1 uit, laat er zes staan - hier vouw je de stof straks om, trek er 1 draad uit, laat er 3 staan, trek 1 draad uit. Hier zie je de grote festonsteek, twee hokjessteken breed. Vouw de stof dubbel op de 6 draden die je liet staan, rijg dit vast. Voer nu de hokjessteek uit over 3 x 3 draden, doe dit met een in verhouding dunne draad (bijvoorbeeld perlé 12). Je borduurt dus door twee lagen stof heen. Voor het 'nocciola' randje neem je nu een dikkere draad (perlé 8) en voert een grote festonsteek uit (aan de rand van het werk), waarbij je over 6 draden werkt, vanaf de hokjessteek (dus je maakt 1 festonsteek die twee hokjessteken breed is. Dan steek je in de lus van de grote festonsteek en daar maak je drie festonsteken in de lus (zie foto's). Na de drie festonsteken in de eerste, maak je opnieuw een grote festonsteek onder de volgende twee hokjessteken, en opnieuw drie festonsteken maken in de grote festonsteek. Dat is alles. In het boek wordt er daarna, ook twee hokjessteken breed, nog een boogje geborduurd. Dit heb ik overgeslagen omdat het hier maar zo'n klein werkje betrof. Maak een festonsteek in de lus van de brede festonsteek Doe dit in totaal 3 maal in elke grote festonsteek, maak dan een nieuwe grote festonsteek, 2 hokjessteken breed.
