In an attempt to keep my children occupied with quiet activities while we are at church, travelling, etc. this week, I've been busy making these Quiet Books. My goal was to create something that could be easily added to/changed in order to keep it interesting for them and here's what I came up with: Sorry for not providing a full tutorial on this. It was one of those projects that I wanted to finish quickly but it wasn't difficult, so I'll try to be descriptive enough about what I did. For the covers of the books, I measured out my fabric (it's three layers thick) about 4 cm larger than the album refill pages on the inside (two of the polka dotted fabric, and one quilted polyester to give it a bit of added structure and heaviness). Then I sewed the layers (polka dots facing each other with quilted layer behind them) and left the bottom open. Flipped it right side out and topstitched/sewed the bottom closed. The binding is grosgrain ribbon threading through small buttonholes. For the personalized titles, I stamped ribbon with these letters using Tulip fabric markers. I used these album refill pages for the inside. This is favourite part because I can fill these pages with different activities, and the children can draw/write on them using dry erase markers. Stickers also remove and reapply easily. Here are the pages. You can see what my little ones are really into these days. With Tobias, it's all about Little Einsteins and Dot-to-Dots. I had intended for Tobias to match the letter to the animal sticker using markers, but he wanted to move them. Whatever, as long as he had fun! I got the idea for the gel filled bag from here. Anja loves animals and In the Night Garden. First thing in the morning, I couldn't wait to show Tobias & Anja their books...and they couldn't wait to use them!

Build a reading community with this "Books We've Read Bookshelf" display! Students have access to an editable Google Slide where they can upload their own pictures of the books they're reading. This resource makes it easy for teachers as minimal cutting is required. If you want to further track books, students can take ownership of cutting and attaching additional books with double-sided tape. Hey Friends! I have been SO impressed with the comments left on these posts- thank you so much! The winner from the last post is... This is a fun comment- thanks Deb! :) Here we go... Let me first show you how I store my word work: I got this at Target for like $25 I think. I like having the large drawer at the bottom to hold the bigger stuff. I had cutesy labels for each drawer but they kept ripping so my FAB aide from a few years ago made these for me and they are holding up beautifully~ the key is to laminate and then cover with packing tape or contact paper. Those little hands are destructive and you don't want to have to constantly redo your beautiful work. :) So let's take a look in each drawer... This is my dry erase drawer. It is simple- write your words on the dry erase board. :) Usually there are erasers in this drawer but they escaped at the end of the year. I will give you a link at the end for all the papers I show in the post. This is a direction sheet that stays in the drawer for the kids- they know to read the directions about what is needed if they forget (instead of asking me). OH side note--- I use my spelling words for the week as my word work. I find that works the best and we can focus on that phonics sound for the week. I store the word lists on the side of my word word container like this: I have 2 lists challenge and regular. I call them list 1 and list 2. Next drawer... Colorful words- put makers in a bag and then the kids write their words in a colorful way. I have the kids do this in their "word work" notebook which is just a section of a spiral notebook. Next... Stamps. These little guys came from Target dollar spot- keep your eyes peeled as I usually seem them come out in August. I believe I got the little containers from Staples. I have a separate sheet where the kids stamp their words- Next up... The most popular drawer! That is why there is only one lonely play-doh left in this drawer! The white basket is usually full of popsicle sticks. They are used for writing the words on a "pancake" style play-doh instead of forming each letter. I give them the option because sometimes forming the word just takes too long. Bottom drawer... (lots of goodies) These are bottle caps- water bottle caps to be specific. I collected them during the summer and had friends collecting for me too (its not too late to start collecting!) I got the container from JoAnns. I added a white circle sticker to the top of the bottle cap. The kids use the letters to spell out their words- another favorite! Also in the bottom drawer.... These are just foam letters from Michaels. Stencils! The kids love these! :) Hard to tell as these got mangled but they are Wikki Stix! The kids had a lot of fun with these and I need to buy more! Finally, the amazing reading specialist at my building had a great idea of using an old keyboard to "type" out their words... What a fun idea! I have some keyboards ready to go for this year. If you don't have a word work notebook... I have created a cover and paper you could use to make your own! Here are some of the things we have been up to this month! 1. ALPHABET STAMPING I wanted a recording sheet for the kids to practice using alphabet stamps with so I quickly made these up and they were a big hit with our class! I was asked by many people to share the recording sheet so you can it is now uploaded on TPT as part of my "Anytime Alphabet Stamping Sheets" pack! LINKING CHAIN NUMBERS Here is a simple math centre I put out for the students to explore linking chains! This centre invites students to read the number and link that many chains under it. It is a great centre for developing number identification, one to one correspondence and fine motor! I've made and posted a similar sensory bin to this before, but I updated the recording sheet so I thought I'd post again. Students are invited to pick up a letter, find it on the recording sheet and dab it with a bingo daubber. The repeat until they find all 26 letters! The kids loved this one! The base is black beans and I added wooden letters (Dollarama), magnifying glasses, pencils, an eraser, some bingo daubbers and a recording sheet. Our kids LOVE play dough this year so they loved this one too! 4. MEET THE TEACHER SCAVENGER HUNT We had our Meet the Teacher on September 19 (my birthday! lol). I always put this scavenger hunt out. I love it because it encourages the students to take the lead and show the parents around our classroom and it gives them something to do while they wait to talk to us! We have a reading table, a writing table, a math table and a communication table (reminder to sign up for Remind and a link to the classroom blog) and a donation table set up for Meet the Teacher! This year we typed up what we wanted on these little coffee cups and put the out with this sign. We already got a box of Kleenex yesterday and many parents took a coffee cup to donate! SCISSORS PRACTICE My kiddos love using scissors this year but they do need more practice.. so I thought I'd set up this simple cutting provocation for them to explore cutting different lines! They loved this! Our scissors experts challenged themselves with the spiral lines and my beginners were encouraged to start with the red strips. You can grab the template to make these for free by clicking here or on the image below: 7. ELECTRICAL TAPE LETTERS I saw this idea on @jadorekinder's Instagram account and knew I had to try it! All you need is black electrical tape (I found some at Dollarama) and loose parts. Create letters with the tape, put out some loose parts and have the students make the letters! The kids LOVED this centre! 8. FAMILY BULLETIN BOARD This is our first bulletin board for the year! We read "A Family Is a Family Is a Family" by Sara O'Leary and talked about how all families are unique and special. Then I asked them to tell me something about their family. As the students shared their answers I typed them up. I also sent a letter home asking each family to send a family photo that we could use for the bulletin board. As the photos came in, we shared the family photos with the class and then we put their photo and what they shared about their families on the bulletin board. The students loved seeing pictures of each other's families! Here are the expectations we touched upon during this activity: 9. WALTER'S WONDERFUL WEB We have bene learning about 2D shapes. We read the book "Walter's Wonderful Web" by Tim Hopgood and then we made our own wonderful shape webs! I drew the middle shape for them in white crayon and drew their web. Then the students filled in their webs with shapes! We have shape word cards on the math tools board and the students did a great job using those to pick and draw their shapes! VISUAL SCHEDULE We finally finished up our visual schedules! I take new pictures each year so the kids can see themselves and their classrooms in the pictures. We change it everyday during our morning meeting to reflect that day's schedule. SHAPE CUTTING My kiddos need more practice with scissors skills so I put out this simple centre and they LOVED it! Not shown in this picture, but there are actually 12 shapes to choose from and this group especially LOVED the hearts! Some kids chose to make hearts for their friends and it was so cute! APPLE PIE COUNTING My kiddos LOVED this apple pie counting centre! I made the pie crust from felt, bought some aluminum pie pans and set them out with some cinnamon sticks, red pom poms and white cotton balls. The reciepe cards are by Playfully Primary. You can find them in her Fall Fine Motor pack by clicking here. 13. ALPHABET PRINT IT 2 This are the pages in our dry erase centre for this month. I love these because they are differentiated. It allows the kids who are working on letter formation to work on the large tracing letters and the kids who are starting to write sentences to trace and read the sentences! These printable paper reminder and brag watches that look like Apple watches are great for elementary students! Choose a pre-made message or add your own. Print and cut. Students can attach the watch to their wrist with a little piece of tape (double sided tape works really well!) If you want to reuse the watches for lunch numbers, bus numbers, etc., you could always laminate the watches and attach them with velcro. Use as reminders and/or as rewards.
