Have I mentioned how creative my kiddos are!? I could shout it from the rooftop! They never seize to amaze me with their ideas and passion for learning. They remind me why I love my job so much. I love watching them learn. In writing, we have been working on our writers crafts. We have been trying to enhance our own writing by adding figurative language to engage our audience. Today, we focused on onomatopoeias. I introduced the lesson by reviewing what we already knew about the craft. In fifth and sixth grade, a lot of the things we are focusing on in writing is review. Most of my students have a pretty good handle on the idea. We talked about where we see onomatopoeias most often. They responded by saying things like, "children's books", "captions", and "comics". We centered our focus on the latter. Some many of my students are so interested in comic books. I decided this was a wonderful way to incorporate this! I gave the students each a blank comic consisting of a variety of frames. They were in charge of creating a comic using onomatopoeias! One onomatopoeias had to be present in each frame. They turned out wonderfully! I gave them mine as an example: The students' had so much fun reading their peers comics in the hallway. I loved hearing them standing outside my door reading the onomatopoeias with such emotion! "BANG! BOOM! CRASH!" The hallway has been filled with figurative language excitement.

I have been DYING to do a Tim Burton inspired project with my kids for a couple of years, but I was unsure of what I wanted to do. This year, I decided that it would be fun to have my 2nd graders create self portraits in the style of Tim Burton! This is one of my all-time favorite projects I have done with my kids EVER, and they are enthused about it because it is inspired by someone they know who creates movies they love. I did this with my 2nd graders, but this can be created with several age ranges with some tweaks or additions. I have uploaded ALL of the resources I created myself to help my kids make their portraits the best they could be. I also created lessons inspired by the book "Drawing with Children" in the form of duplication exercises to get my kiddos practicing drawing several features before we started our final project.

Sometimes I think we like to make long lists for ourselves of all the things we think the Lord requires of us - all the things we're supposed to be and do - when really it all boils down to the basics. If we can do these, everything else grows naturally from that. I think it's when we get it backwards, when we try to force all the to-do stuff without grounding ourselves in these basic principles and the 'why' of discipleship that we start to feel overwhelmed and even inauthentic. I'll be putting this one away in my mental file of things to remember when I get feeling that way, so I can take a deep breath and begin again. This activity is a great companion to the book "A Letter From My Teacher" and a great start to your Social Emotional Learning curriculum. I have seen this back to school idea before - kids write a letter to their teacher telling all about themselves. These are often expected to be multi paragraph writing pieces. Often teachers use it as an all about me activity and a writing assessment all-in-one. I RESIST this kind of activity at the beginning of the year as SEL is a huge focus in my classroom and so I came up with this activity instead. And, I LOVE it. Why I LOVE This Scaffolded A Letter to My Teacher Activity It shows that I CARE about them - I want to know more about them. See, a step towards building trust. You can't get that with an assessment. It gives me a ton of INFORMATION about the student. They are PRIVATE - I tell kids that these letters are not being shared with the class. They are just for me. That title - "A Letter for My Teacher" is true - it is for me only. It's OPEN ended without being too open ended. Kids are give prompts to answer with a lot of space to add extra information to the prompts and places to ask questions or add what they believe to be important. It gives those reluctant writers a nudge. It is FUN to give these back to kids at the end of the year. Students couldn't believe their responses! Some commented on how their writing conventions improved and how off they were on some of the expectations they had when entering Grade 5. It is LESS INTIMIDATING for ESL, reluctant writers and those with learning disabilities. It's not an assessment, there is no pressure to come up with ideas and supporting details or worry about conventions. Kids get out some of what they are FEELING right away - good information for teachers. You can see what kids are happy to be in school, who is not and which kids are anxious (and sometimes even why). This is a hysterical book that kids absolutely love! Can you create your own potato person with legs, arms, and a face? Materials Needed: (per classroom) - 1 potato per student (can be a fingerling potato or a normal sized potato) - pipe cleaners in assorted colors - yarn (for hair) - google eyes - any other art materials you may have on hand Can you create a pair of pants for your potato person?
