Eliot, George "Daniel Deronda" - 1876 I like the style of the 19th century. I especially like George Eliot's style. She describes the characters extremely well, the problems between the different people are very interesting and everyone seems so alive. There are people whom you will like and others whom you will dislike. The novel gives a lot of information about life at the time, a lot of history, the problem the Jews had all through the centuries. A very interesting book, a lot to read, about 750 pages. George Eliot said herself that she expected a stronger resistance to her book because of the Jewish element. She wanted to depict the Jews with sympathy and understanding and felt that her readers would dislike this. Throughout the whole book I was amazed how much George Eliot knew about the Jews and the problems they were facing, she almost predicted WWII. I loved this book. We discussed this in our book club in June 2003. We also read "Middlemarch" by the same author. From the back cover: "George Eliot's final novel and her most ambitious work, Daniel Deronda contrasts the moral laxity of the British aristocracy with the dedicated fervor of Jewish nationalists. Crushed by a loveless marriage to the cruel and arrogant Grandcourt, Gwendolen Harleth seeks salvation in the deeply spiritual and altruistic Daniel Deronda. But Deronda, profoundly affected by the discovery of his Jewish ancestry, is ultimately too committed to his own cultural awakening to save Gwendolen from despair."
The term "literary fiction," is a bit of a loaded one. Defined as any fictional work that holds "literary merit," the phrase is undeniably subjective. After all, what does it mean for something to hold literary merit? Who decides such things? Why are some works better than others
If you could manifest my love/hate relationship with story tropes and plot devices in concrete form, it turns out it would look like a bingo card.

In Commonwealth, Ann Patchett brilliantly weaves together flawed families who fail one another over the decades but keep trying and trusting in spite of the failures. Where you would expect villains, she instead presents complicated characters struggling with their own hopes, inadequacies, and feelings about the past and how to move forward. Where you would expect broken, bitter relationships, she shows the enduring power of loyalty, love, and forgiveness. This is not an action-packed novel, but one where the subtle emotional tensions will resonate. Highly recommended, along with all of her other books.

Our unit on Folk tales was a lot of fun! However, explaining that while all folk tales have similar characteristics, there are elements that define them into different categories. To make this visual, I developed this wall display in our classroom. At the top of the pyramid is listed what all folk tales have in common. Below are the specific types of folk tales that have more identifiable elements. The students were able to use this pyramid as they read various types of folk tales to determine the specific type. Great visual...glad I made it. Additionally, I printed each of these on small labels, which students then adhered into their reading journals. As we read various stories, they had to determine which type of folk tale it was and write the title of the story next to the sticker. This gave us a great way to chronicle all of the stories we had read. Based on the Common Core Standards this is the guiding question we read every day. At the end of each lesson students are asked to write an answer to the question on their 'ticket to leave'. As the days progress, so do the responses to the same question. This method allows for students to add to their learning and allow multiple opportunities to answer the same question. It is also a great way to do some quick formative assessing. Additionally, our Essential Question guided our thinking throughout the unit: "What life lessons can we learn through folk tales?" Here are some of the folk tales we studied: porquos, tall tales, and fables.
