I knew I wanted to pick a theme that was simple and sweet but not over-done and so I thought, "what does Callum really enjoy?" The answers were- dogs, food, hadadas (the most obnoxious bird in the whole world) water and bikes. Oliver had a puppy party for his first birthday so I didn't want to repeat that, there would obviously be food at the party, it's not summer yet so not having a water party and Oliver might have a bike party for his 4th soon so those were all out.

I'm back on here after a nearly two year blog hiatus! It's fun when you have special things to write about! My nearly 11 year old daughter was having trouble deciding what theme to use for her birthday party. I listed off and asked questions about her interests when finally we came to books! We had been listening to the Focus on the Family Radio Theater Chronicles of Narnia audiobooks. A Narnia party it would be! We looked at pinterest and found some great inspiration! See At the Picket Fence and Toni Spilsbury. I also found a lion graphic to use with my Silhouette cutting machine. I used it to make the sign on our front door, along with hand copying the Narnia font. We used the cut out lions on a banner too. We found gold plates, utensils and paper goods, so we set places for each kid along with stick on jewels for their cups. My daughter had hoped to find some goblets as seen on At the Picket Fence. We spray painted some plastic lions from the dollar store gold to be our Aslans. We attempted to make a wardrobe entrance like Toni Spilsbury had for the entrance into our living room. I used spray paint and the stencil that was made from the lion cut outs. Kind of shabby, but the effect was great for the kids! We cut right up the middle of the doors on the sheet, and you could walk through. We have to get creative at times with food and ideas being that we're not in the States. Our menu included: Father Christmas Ham Beaver Dam Pudding (Caramel) Apples of Youth & (Kettle Corn) Forever Winter Snow Acorns (Dates), Nectarines and Cair Paravel Cupcakes Mrs. Beaver's Hot Chocolate While the kids were finishing their snacks, we passed out the treasure boxes to paint. We got the idea from Lisa Leonard Designs blog. We found small wooden ones at our dollar store. A couple of the boys decided to use their stick-on jewels in other spots while they painted their treasure boxes! Next, we had "Susan's Archery Practice" in our neighbors' backyard (they already had a target spot). All the kids seemed to enjoy giving it a shot! This is the birthday girl's little sister! I did not get any great pictures of our Scavenger Hunt but wanted to tell you about it! We took copied colored illustrations from the books, cut them into puzzle pieces and laminated them. Then we hid them all over our street and outdoor spaces with Narnia-ized clues as you can see below for one of the teams. For example, number seven was in an olive tree. Team Dawn Treader 1. The Clawed Vine Portal 2. The Bashful Blush Blossoms 3. The Pear Postal 4. The Elves' Correspondence 5. The Royal Footrest 6. The Electric Chest Alley 7. The Oil Fruit Branches 8. The Silver Cauldron Our last activity was freeing the animals from their "frozen" state in a balloon, in the same vein as the White Witch had turned so many of the creatures into statues in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We had put little plastic animals in the balloons to free with darts. . One more shot of our birthday girl and her sister! She was really pleased with the party!

What happens when literature lovers marry?
My little sister Sam turned 10 in June. A few weeks prior to her birthday she started dropping hints that perhaps I should be planning out her soiree for her, but, unfortunately for her, Kurt and I were finally going to get around to taking a honeymoon on her actual birthday. In a completely un-10-year-old-y move, she decided to postpone her birthday party until I returned. But, lest you think this was because she enjoys my company, it was actually because she knows I throw the most legit-est of all the kid parties. If you find yourself conversing with 10 year olds, then you may have heard of the Warriors book series. In short: it's a book series about gangs clans of wild cats who live in the forest and do cat stuff. I took it upon myself to do some scientific Google research so I could make the party as true to the books as possible without actually having to read them. One thing I found while trying to find parties that other people did (which was very slim pick-ins) was that grown-ups must not have really researched the books and often tried to go with a jungle cat theme. These books are about normal cats that happen to be wild, not leopards. Don't let your little humans down like this, big humans! Cat Ears Sam and I decided everyone would be assigned a cat-sona (see what I did there?) upon arrival. Sam went so far as to make me a list of cat names from the books and their colors so I could be sure to make the right amount of properly colored ears. I even made pairs for Kurt and me. I like to be in character. Hi I'm Sisterpaw. You'll need: headband multi-packs (I found them at Michael's but also check the dollar store) cat colored felt (no leopard or tiger!) pen scissors hot glue and gun Pick a cat ear shape and draw it out on a piece of paper for a pattern. Also make a pattern for the inner-ear shape Trace the outer-ear pattern onto the felt, doubling it over, making sure to leave a little strip between each side of the ear so it can wrap around the headband. Repeat step 2 for the inner ear parts, but don't worry about doubling anything up. The inner ear will only show on the front. Hot glue those bad boys together. Don't stress about how legit the cat ears look. Remember that they're for little kids and will probably be thrown away at the end of the day. Buy them in bulk online if you're craft-icapped. 'Become a Warrior' Station Using the list Sam gave me of all the names of the warrior cats, I made name tags using clear plastic pop-out tags from Michael's. The things were miserable and I broke at least half a pack trying to get them apart to put the names in. I arranged the name tags in square faux grass patches that I got on clearance from Michael's. Sam wrote the warrior names on the inside of the cat ears to ensure that once a name was drawn from the warrior station that everyone had the proper color ears. Gotta love a kid who pays attention to details. Offerings Gifts, duh. 'For the Journey' Gift Bags Sam compiled (in all honesty) some random crap for the gift bags. I think there was a wooden puzzle, a bobble head cat, and some Swedish Fish in it. The good news is that several kids forgot their goody bags and I was able to go in and poach the candy from them. Nom. Moonpool My sister is fortunate enough to live with my parents, who are fortunate enough to have a pool. They also live in the woods so it fit the theme quite well. In the book the cats assemble at a place called the Moonpool so I put my sister's good fortune to use by making the pool into the Moonpool. Kurt and my dad rented a helium machine (which was a waste of money--don't do that) and blew up enough balloons to arch over the pool. They really struggled with this, only to see most of them deflate shortly after (sorry guys!). So if you have the means and really want to do this, I'd suggest hiring a balloon person to do it for you. Fresh Kill Table "Fresh Kill" is straight from the books and just means "food." The sign was from Party City and was actually for a tiki-themed party. I removed the paper backing that had parrots on it and made my own sign with contrasting forest-y looking papers. I made the letters by cutting out bone shapes. The mini tiki torches were also from Party City and were about $7 each I believe, but I found them later at Wal-Mart for much cheaper, so go there first. The backdrop was cheap plastic table clothes cut length-wise and attached to the ceiling light fixture above the table. Strawberry Mice You'll need: a knife black or red (I used red) string licorice (like the Pull-n-Peel kind) strawberries mini marshmallows almond slivers black cake decorating icing (I used the gel kind and it worked well) Cut the stems out of the strawberries. Shove a mini marshmallow in each strawberry's "butt." Cut small sections of the string licorice. Stick a licorice piece into each marshmallow "butt." Stick two almond slivers in the strawberry for ears. Draw two dots for eyes and one for a nose on the pointy end of the strawberry. Bird Nests You'll need: mini chocolate donuts a baking sheet shredded coconut speckled jelly beans Toast the shredded coconut by spreading it on a baking sheet and baking it at 375 degrees for five minutes. Roll the chocolate donuts in the toasted coconut. Don't worry if this looks messy. Bird nests are messy. Top with speckled jelly beans. Bones You'll need: short, skinny pretzel rods mini marshmallows white melting chocolate a cookie sheet wax paper Stick a mini marshmallow on each end of the skinny pretzel rods so they look like dumb bells. Melt the white chocolate according to package instructions. Dip the 'dumb bells' in the white chocolate and let dry on a wax paper covered baking sheet. Moonpool Jell-O I got the idea for a Jell-O fishbowl (in this case it would be a pond) from Pinterest and let my step mom handle it. She didn't follow the instructions which called for flat sprite and food color to make a light, see-through blue, which was initially disappointing because the fish more or less disappeared in the dark blue Jell-O, but I actually think it lent itself more to the natural body-of-water feel because generally those aren't see-through like a fishbowl anyway. Plus when the Jell-O was served the fish became visible so it was like, "Hey, surprise! There's more sugar in your sugar!" You'll need: a big bowl swedish fish blue Jell-O Make the Jell-O in the big bowl according to package instructions. When set, but not fully hardened, start shoving in random Swedish Fish. Finish with a few popping out of the top. Clan Cookies These were sort of a disaster. My original plan was to roll sugar cookie dough onto a baking sheet, cut out the clan shape, and then draw the clan symbols onto the cookies with cake decorating icing. This did not work out for me. My alternate plan was to just draw the clan shapes and symbols onto round cookies, but this proved to be rather tedious as well. Cookie decorating, as it turns out, is not my strong suit. After decorating one cookie for each clan I lost interest and just stuck one on each pile of cookies. Only the first kid to get to the table appreciated my effort, but I got a picture first, so oh well. Moonpool Bottled Water Just some copying and pasting in Word, printing, and taping. The Cake Sam wanted an ice cream cake which meant any decorating I wanted to do to it would have to be done quickly. I used chocolate chips to render her favorite clan (Thunderclan) in the center and then popped some of the other, already-made decorative foods on there. I thought it looked pretty rough but her and the other kids were ridiculously excited about it, so I guess it passed? Games Pick Your Prey This game was basically an Easter Egg hunt, but cat themed. Sam had a few large bags of stuffed animals that were en route to be donated so we combed through them in search of animals that a cat might eat (mice, birds, etc) and my dad hid them throughout the yard. The kid who found the most "prey" won. Pass The Prey Hot potato, but with a stuffed mouse. I played music from my iPhone and randomly stopped it. Whoever had the mouse was out. This was a good idea in theory but I didn't think to make a playlist ahead of time and just let my iTunes randomly shuffle. I'm 27, I don't have kids, and I went through a serious unedited rap music phase so I promise you this was not a good idea. The Hunt This one's slightly more confusing...but basically it's a complicated version of Tag. I separated the kids into three groups: cats, birds, and mice. Mice received 10 rubber bands to wear around their wrists, birds received five, cats got none. The rules were explained that cats were allowed to tag everyone, birds were allowed to tag only mice, and mice weren't allowed to tag anyone. Mice got a running head start, followed by birds, and then cats. If someone was tagged, that person was to relinquish one of her rubber bands and then had 10 Mississippi-seconds to run away without being re-tagged. The kid with the most rubber bands after 10 minutes was the winner. I'd never seen this game played before so I wasn't sure how it would work out...but in general the "cats" ran around and tagged everyone pretty quickly and no one else had a chance. In a surprising turn of events, however, one "mouse" hid in a bush the whole time and re-appeared after 10 minutes with all 10 rubber bands still in tact and won.

Last but not certainly not least, we celebrated cute Nora's birthday. She had picked Pegasus as the theme she wanted for her birthday. hmmmm Pegasus, how do you throw a Pegasus themed party ....? well scroll through the pictures and we will show you! We went in a Greek plus mount Olympus plus clouds plus mythology sort of direction, and combined all those elements to make one amazing party. This theme was right up my ally, I LOVE Greek mythology! We also included lots of feathers since Pegasus' wings are an important part of what sets him apart from unicorns and just regular old horses... As usual bethy brought fun and unique balloons. Balloons really make any party super festive. This time some of the balloons had big gold confetti in it .... They kind of look like Greek coins to me And she had them put feathers in others, how cool is that! Nora's Greek birthday girl throne Grammy let Nora open one present early.... A super awesome stuffed representation of the horse himself! Gold star confetti On one of my numerous visits to the craft store I found some edible gold spray paint. Can you say amazing!! I snatched up a bottle when I found it and have been waiting for any excuse to use it. Bethy thought it would be cool to spray paint bunches of grapes to make edible center pieces ... How neat are they?! This is the product itself, it is so fun to use! I found it at Michael's craft store. Bethy made these cute little favors to put at everyone's place at the table. So if you look at my blog often you know that Jens makes the most amazing birthday cakes for all of her kids' parties. Here is the cake she made for this party ... I was obsessed with it. I thought it was GORGEOUS! and just so awesome in every way, so I took a bazillion pictures of it. Look how cool that ombre is! The buffet was all Greek inspired food, SO GOOD! Jens even found ground lamb for the gyros, she really goes the extra mile to make her parties amazing for her kiddos. It was like being right back in the center of Athens I had a little spy teasing me while I ate ... After dinner it was time for presents!! I love how the siblings get just as {or maybe even a little bit more} excited when the presents are revealed! Sam would steal a little sit on the throne whenever he could. Some of the presents had gold tinsel inside, and boy the little kids LOVED it! Tinsel EVERYWHERE!!! Nora got right to work on one of her presents. These scratch art things were one of my favorite crafts as a child. I had the hardest time not taking it away from Nora and completing it myself haha After presents it was time to dive into that delectable cake! Nora's birthday in on May 31st and Marolynn's birthday is on June 1st. So Jens made a special batch of chocolate GF cupcakes for Marolynn. Politely and patiently waiting for her cake ... Nora had requested for her cake to be cherry flavored, so that is what her sweet mom made for her. Then it was time for our Grecian photo booth. We got some really fun pictures! "We are the muses. Goddesses of the arts and proclaimers of Heroes ...." Random candid photo that I thought was funny Jenny had prepared a little fun short quiz for that last activity of the night. The questions were all about Greek mythology and Greek art and architecture. She had visuals from the Disney movie Hercules for every question. Since we were at a kids approved birthday party, Jens asked for the Disney answer rather then the real myth answer on some questions since we all know those myths could get a little risque ..... haha She did a really great job on it, it was so fun! We were all divided into teams and were awarded medals according to where we placed. Beth, Reece and Evie got the gold Mike, Marilyn and I got the silver Mom, Dad and Nora got the bronze. All the Griffin parties have been so great this year! Birthday season at their house is always a fun time of year! Thanks Griffin family for being so awesome!

The year Avery's birthday party was more like a small gathering, yet we wanted to make it special. She has read The BFG by Roald Dahl at least twice, and we had a special date to the see the movie when it came out in theaters. One day we mentioned how fun/funny it would be to have a BFG party, and the idea stuck. If you have seen or read The BFG, you know that the Big Friendly Giant mixes up words and sayings in a most endearing way. We did our best to highlight some favorites. As I said, this gathering was a bit pared down from our usual parties. Since we included watching the movie as part of the party, we served popcorn, cake, cookies, and a tasty beverage. The cake was fun to make! It wasn't one I would make again for flavor, but it received the desired affect from Avery. The tricky part was that the book version of a snozzcumber varied a bit from the movie version. We leaned toward the movie version, because I wasn't really game for a black cake. If you wanted to duplicate this cake, I used the Jelly Roll recipe from Martha Stewart, but filled it with strawberry jelly and buttercream. For the the frosting, I tried the Marshmallow Frosting from Sweetapolita. At this point, sugar cookies have become a tradition at our parties. Avery actually came up with the idea to reuse the mason jar cutter from her Chasing Fireflies party. If you are not familiar with the story, the BFG collects and distributes dreams. He and Sofie catch a special dream that he saves just for her. Frobscottle is another funny drink depicted in the book. We used this tasty recipe idea. I had two activities planned, but we ran out of time for the second one. Since the BFG's job is to catch dreams, we made our own dream catchers. Avery and I pre-made some felt hearts and pom-poms to speed things along. I can't believe we have a nine year old!!
Our church hosted a "Kingdom Chronicles" VBS this year so I needed to come up with some simple and inexpensive medieval decorations. Here's what I made... Poster board torches (Yield 10) 3 sheets of each red, orange, and yellow tissue paper 2 sheets of black poster board (you can get 5 cones from each sheet) staples hot glue gun 11" quarter circle made using a measuring tape and pencil like a compass sticky tack or pushpins to hand the torches with Roll your quarter circle into a cone Add one staple at the outside upper corner Take one sheet of each color tissue paper (red, orange, and yellow) Lay them on top of each other and cut into quarters Bunch the centers together and staple Hot glue the stapled tip of the tissue paper to the inside of the poster board cone Toilet paper roll chandelier (Yields 2) 1 sheet of each red, orange, and yellow tissue paper, each cut into 16 rectangles 1 sheet of black poster board 12 toilet paper tubes 4 large cardboard circles (14"-16" diameter) like the ones pictured below staples hot glue gun 1. Glue 2 circles together (for strength) 2. Makes 1/2" cuts around the bottom of every toilet paper tube 3. Open up the slits and hot glue the tubes evenly around the outer edge of your circles 4. Spray paint your chandeliers from top to bottom with black spray paint 5. Make "flame" tufts out of your tissue paper and staple them at the bottom (like the torches above) 6. Stuff tissue paper "flames" into each toilet paper tube 7. Cut poster board into 1" x 6 1/4" strips (you should be able to get at least 90 strips of paper) 8. Make 6 separate paper chains of 13-15 links each (depending on how long you want them) 9. Glue 3 paper chains to each chandelier 10. Connect your three chains together with one final link. 11. Hang your chandeliers using fishing line and ceiling hooks. Dollar store tablecloth banners 2 different color dollar store tablecloths for each banner 16"-20" piece of ribbon to tie each banner fishing line or yarn to tie the two tablecloths together at the top corners duct tape or ceiling hooks to hang the banners from the ceiling The finished product - teaching section up front, craft and coloring station at the back.
