Much to his dismay, my husband can't wear his beloved baseball cap at events, so I made him a dagged hood that can be rolled up into a snazzy chaperon. This type of hood/hat combo is was common during the late 14th century and throughout the 15th century.

BACKSTORY: Gaston III (1331-91), count of Foix and viscount of Béarn, also known as Gaston Phoebus because of his shiny blond hair, wrote his book on hunting between 1387 and 1389 and dedicated it to Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. The treatise is in five parts, which successively describe the habits of several types of game animals; the maintenance of hunting dogs; deer hunting; hunting other types of game; and finally the less-noble methods of hunting involving traps. The first printed edition of the work, abundantly illustrated with wood-block prints, was published by bookseller Antoine Vérard in Paris in around 1507. This reproduction was published in 1938 in the magazine Verve, a French arts magazine. This is a two page spread illustrating various hunting scenes including, Bears, Caring for the Hounds, Wolf Trap. An explanation of the particulars of the scenes is included on the reverse sides of the spread. Printed to the highest six color standards maintained by Verve Magazine. Illuminated Manuscript.
