Hey everyone! Today is my stop at the blog tour of Blazewrath Games by Amparo Ortiz. Thanks to Hear Our Voices Book Tours for having me in this tour. Book title: Blazewrath Games Publication date: October 6, 2020 Author: Amparo Ortiz Genre: Young Adult Fantasy Publisher: Page Street Kids Pages: 368 How I got the book: Sent for Review; the publisher provided me an ARC in exchange of my honest review. Star rating: Synopsis Experience the World Cup with dragons in this debut fantasy, set in an alternate contemporary world, in which riders and their steeds compete in an international sports tournament. Lana Torres has always preferred dragons to people. In a few weeks, sixteen countries will compete in the Blazewrath World Cup, a tournament where dragons and their riders fight for glory in a dangerous relay. Lana longs to represent her native Puerto Rico in their first ever World Cup appearance, and when Puerto Rico’s Runner—the only player without a dragon steed—is kicked off the team, she’s given the chance. But when she discovers that a former Blazewrath superstar has teamed up with the Sire—a legendary dragon who’s cursed into human form—the safety of the Cup is jeopardized. The pair are burning down dragon sanctuaries around the world and refuse to stop unless the Cup gets cancelled. All Lana wanted was to represent her country. Now, to do that, she’ll have to navigate an international conspiracy that’s deadlier than her beloved sport. Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Bookshop.org | Book Depository | Books-A-Million Review Are you ready for my fangirling?! OMG, this book... this book is just AMAZEBALLS AMAZING! This is the debut novel of Amparo Ortiz and I just can't wait for more. Seeing a Puerto Rican main character in a book made my whole year! Blazewrath Games is one of my favorite books; and I'm talking about top 3, ok? Enough with the fangirling and let's get to the details. I was really excited to read this book because of the boricua Lana Torres, but also because of the dragons. Who doesn't love dragons? (No, honestly, who doesn't love dragons because I'm going to revoke you my friendship card). I even asked Ann Jewelry Collection to make me some dragon earrings inspired in Blazewrath Games. Just in case, I'm not obsessed with dragons, although this post may show you otherwise. (My real obsession are mermaids). Photo by Ann Jewelry Collection Anyway, this book is pure magic and I love it! Wait until you meet the Sol de Noche Dragons... and the rest of the dragons as well! You are probably going to fall in love with all of them. And the Sire? Wow, such a great character development. I love hating him, you know? I hold Lana near my heart because of the struggles with her identity; I felt instantly drawn to her. Blazewrath Games have a lot of characters! For me, that was a little difficult. But it is something you can work through. One of my favorite things, besides the dragons, was the relationship between Lana and Samira. It made me think of my relationship with my friend, Andrea Carolina; we are always joking around! So yeah, the fun relationship between them was so relatable. I think I haven't read a YA fantasy novel with such a perfect world building as Blazewrath Games. I was able to see and imagine everything on my mind! Actually, can we get a Blazewrath Games movie, please? Also, I loved the presence of a lot of cultures. Especially everything about team Puerto Rico and all the little details, like the Puerto Rican flag, their pride, and the musical instruments (like we always do cheering our teams!). I felt I was there chanting with the rest of the Puerto Ricans! Team Puerto Rico all the way!!! ¡Yo soy boricua, pa' que tú lo sepas! I admire Amparo Ortiz because her writing style is so SO good. The details in every page were gracefully crafted. If this book sounds like something you would enjoy, be sure to add it to you TBR! Have you read it yet? Let me know so we can talk about it ;) Amparo Ortiz' interview Tell us a little bit about yourself. First of all, thank you so much for participating in the tour and for reading BWG!! As for me, hi! My name is Amparo and I'm an author living in Puerto Rico. I currently teach ESL to college students, but I was almost a clinical psychologist, then I was almost a lawyer. I'm very happy with how things worked out, lol. What inspired you to write BLAZEWRATH GAMES? DRAGONS. I wanted to write something with the most badass mythical creature known in the fantasy genre. I just wanted to make it Puerto Rican. And to center its existence around a magical sport. It took many years to flesh out the sport, its rules, and how my main character fit into this specific story. Trial and error times a thousand, lol. But seeing someone who shares my cultural heritage in some capacity in a fantasy novel was what drove me to keep going. As a Boricua, I got really excited (and I'm still fangirling) with this book because it has a Puerto Rican main character. What can you tell us about the importance of representation in books? It's crucial. I can't tell you how touched I've felt whenever readers tell me they saw themselves in Lana, or in other characters/aspects of the book. And this book has been on shelves for about two weeks. I can't imagine the kind of hunger there was for stories such as this. I certainly needed this story growing up, so I write it instead of waiting for someone else to do so. Zero regrets. How did Sol de Noche dragons came to life in your imagination? Tell us about the creative process. I knew my dragons were going to have black scales simply because black is my favorite color. I also knew they could set their bodies on fire, and they were the only species that's capable of doing so! But that was pretty much all I knew. It wasn't until I started drafting that everything became clearer regarding how their magic would evolve and how they would use it on the Blazewrath field. Any scene with a Sol de Noche is such a joy to write. I dare say nothing will ever bring me that much happiness as a writer. Who is your favorite character and why? NO FAIR. But also let's pretend I have two favorites, since Lana--my main character--would obviously win. I also adore writing anything with her best friend, Samira! She's just funny and ambitious and hopeful in a way that Lana never could be. That contrast between them was so lovely to explore for me. And just for fun, name 5 random facts about you. 1) I am a Capricorn Sun, a Libra Moon, and a Scorpio Rising. 2) I don't know how to ride a bike! 3) My BTS biases are Jin and Jungkook. 4) I've traveled to 16 countries. 5) I once stood behind Chris Evans for about five or six minutes and never plucked up the courage to talk to him. Ok, this was fun! Thank you so much for your time, Amparo! It was a pleasure having you on my blog. Thea was a fan of The Enemy and The Dead (books 1 and 2 in the series), so we’re very happy to host Charlie as he takes a zombirific tour of London – our stop is the Imperial War Museum. Please give a warm welcome to Charlie, folks! CHARLIE HIGSON’S GUIDE TO LONDON Imperial War Museum I wanted to set my ‘zombie’ series The Enemy, in as real and recognisable a world as I could. It’s about various gangs of kids scattered around different locations in London and I wanted to use locations that had meant a lot to me when I was a kid coming up to visit London. I wanted to include as many of the places I’d loved to visit. Between them these places cover most of central London and create a good geographical network. I knew these places well, but went back to them all to do research, walked around a lot, and, via Twitter, managed to get access to see some of the areas that […]

The Lady of the Loch ‘Although I believe I will die here in this castle, my spirit will never be silent.’ Ravenscraig Castle, Scotland. 1307 When the castle she works in is sacked by the army of Prince Edward of England, kitchen maid Agnes Fitzgerald manages to escape north of Inverness to throw herself at the mercy of the Lord and Lady at Ravenscraig Castle. Although safe for now, the people of Scotland are fighting hard for their independence, and the threat of the English hangs heavy over the land. But when Agnes spies Cam Buchanan swimming in the loch, her mind turns away from war and towards love. Agnes even dares to dream of a happy future, until she learns that Cam must go and fight alongside Robert de Brus. Present day Twins Leah and Zoe need a change, so caretaking at Ravenscraig Castle is the perfect opportunity to get away from it all. Surrounded by rugged Highland countryside, and bordered by a loch, the picturesque setting is everything they dreamed of. But the locals are reluctant to visit Ravenscraig, and there are whispers of ghosts and lost souls. The sisters quickly dismiss such superstition, but soon the overwhelming sadness they feel coming from the tower grows too hard to ignore. Can the sisters finally right the wrongs of seven hundred years of heartbreak, seven hundred years of betrayal… USA Today bestselling author Judy Leigh writing as Elena Collins, brings you this heart-breaking and unforgettable timeslip novel, perfect for fans of Barbara Erskine, Diana Gabaldon and Louise Douglas. Twins Zoe and Leah Drummond and Agnes Fitzgerald. The book starts in 1307 in Scotland and we learn about Agnes, where she is living, and what she does. She works in the kitchen of a castle. The Kildrummy castle in Aberdeenshire is besieged by the English and the King of Scotland's son is disemboweled and a friend of hers has his throat cut. Agnes and another girl Effie, that also works in the kitchen, escape the castle and head to Ravenscraig Castle where they seek refuge. Zoe Drummond has a successful job that she does from anywhere, plus she is very social. Whereas her twin sister Leah is more of an introvert and feels that she fails at everything that she tries to do. When Leah starts looking for a job, she comes across a position as a caretaker in a castle, Ravenscraig she is so excited. One caveat, she has to be part of a couple so she enlists her sister as the other half of the couple. Zoe agrees but only for a 3-month trial Alternating chapters continue the story of Agnes and Effie, Agnes meets a soldier, Cam, whose mother also works at the castle and they form a relationship and eventually are handfast. This is with all the fighting that is going on between Robert de Brus, who is King of Scotland, and Longshanks, then the proclaimed King. This fighting culminates in the Battle of Bannockburn. A lot of lives were lost on both sides, including Agnes' husband Cam. His body was thrown into the Loch. Agnes is the ghost in the modern time, forever wandering looking for Cam. When Zoe and Leah learn the story of the two lovers, they want to do the right thing by Agnes. They have both seen her wandering the castle. Zoe meets and becomes lover to Daniel, the owner of the castle and Leah enters into a relationship with Christie, the man who is remodeling the castle for Daniel. Ghostly sightings, cold rooms, and other ghostly manifestations lead Zoe, Leah, Daniel, and Christie to the tower in an unused wing of the castle. There they find that someone had been walled in and left to die, starving alone. Such a horrible thing to do but we are dealing with medieval times and that is what they did to people that they either feared or that they wanted out of the way. I am part Scottish and love this kind of story, mixing the past with the present. The cover of this book is beautiful, the research impeccable, and a solid storyline. You will love the ending! If you love historical fiction, give this book a try, you will not be disappointed. I give the book 5 stars!

In Everything We Lose, two young boys are telling us the story of the Civil War. One boy, Adam, is white and living on a small farm with his mom and sister without his dad, who had gone off to fight for the freedom of the slaves and was killed. Tip is a young black slave owned by the Billings family and forced to work on their plantation while his mama cooks and prepares all of the meals and runs the kitchen. Adam and Tip form a very special and unusual friendship that will last a lifetime. When Adam gets in trouble for the killing of the young Billings son for his unfair treatment of Tip, he feels he must leave his farm to protect his mother and sister. He joins the Union army to fight against slavery. Adam becomes close friends with Wes and the two try to protect each other throughout the fighting. Tip, not understanding how he can be owned by another human being, sets out to escape, ends up at another plantation, and must once again run away and try to make it up north where he would be free. Everything We Lose: A Civil War Novel of Hope, Courage and Redemption pulled me into the pages and I felt the sorrow, the joy and the pain of both Adam and Tip. The war and the heartache of being a slave place both boys in life threatening situations and force them to face punishment, hate, bondage and so much more before the war is finally over and they can try to find their way back home to Tennessee. This is a story that made the Civil War jump out of the history books and become very real. I had a hard time putting it down and found myself reading well into the night. Author Annette Oppenlander did her research well, blending real battles into the story which made Adam and Tip feel real. I highly recommend this historical book for all Civil War fans but also for those who just enjoy a good human story that will make you smile and cry.

It's no secret that YA is quickly taking over the world, including TV and movies. That being that, here's a dreamcast for the Dark Elements: Review: It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Jennifer L. Armentrout - she's not only an amazing writer, but also a fantastically witty and fun person to be around. That energy she lives with is infused into her books, her characters, and I think that's why people connect to well to them. STONE COLD TOUCH picks up where White Hot Kiss left off. Layla is confused and grows more and more torn between Zayne and Roth. I typically establish my OTP ship in a series in book one and it doesn't change, but something about this trio has me unsure. I was firmly Team Roth going into this, but I can't deny the attraction with Zayne. There's a sweetness there and a vulnerability that I don't think Layla has with Roth. By the end of the book I am completely at a loss for who I want Layla to end up with. So much has happened and been revealed, and truly either guy would complement her. But I guess I need to make up my mind soon since the choice of who Layla ends up with is in the hands of the reader. In an unprecedented move, Armentrout has opened up the final book and is letting readers vote to determine the fate of Layla's heart. Good luck and choose wisely. The choice is yours... Beginning October 21st you’ll have 3 weeks to visit the series website, www.thedarkelementsseries.com, to take a poll and decide which guy Layla should ultimately choose in the final book in the trilogy, EVERY LAST BREATH. At the end of 3 weeks, we will tally all the votes, and that’s when Jennifer L. Armentrout will start writing EVERY LAST BREATH. The guy who gets the most votes is the one Layla will pick. To prevent early spoilers, we're not going to reveal who won the poll in advance…you’ll have to wait until EVERY LAST BREATH goes on sale on July 28th, 2015 to find out whether Zayne or Roth wins Layla in the end. We promise the book will be epic and definitely worth the wait! Who do you want Layla to end up with? Go to www.thedarkelementsseries.com and vote for your choice! BUY LINKS: Amazon Barnes and Noble Kobo iTunes And don’t forget the previous books in The Dark Elements Series… BITTER SWEET LOVE WHITE HOT KISS GIVEAWAY: One signed print copy of STONE COLD TOUCH for each site to giveaway. US/Canada only Giveaway. Comment below to be entered to win. About STONE COLD TOUCH: Every touch has its price Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could. But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay… About Jennifer L. Too bad Prince Theo turned out to be more of a toad. After I began losing my powers, he lost interest in our upcoming wedding. Not only did Theo leave me at the altar, but he also banished me and my merry band of misfits from the Kingdom of Poppycock forever. Talk about a walk of shame! From enchanted castle to crumbling cottage, I’m now stuck in Morningwood, struggling to plot my next move. This strange little town, full of mischief and magic, is the perfect place to hide while I practice my spells and hopefully regain my powers. What could possibly go wrong? Other than accidentally summoning a mysterious male vampire who throws me off my quest and gets my blood boiling in all the right places. And my blood is exactly what Vail and his brotherhood need for their top-secret laboratory. Who would have thought my charming royal genes could help their dangerous mission? As long as Vail keeps his fangs to himself, we won’t have a problem. His hands though? That’s another story entirely. My taste for revenge is strong, but his taste for me is stronger. Could this be my fairy-tale ending? Or am I destined to live a nightmare? Author’s note: Royally Drained is a paranormal romcom with a few dark themes. This is book 1 in the VILF series and ends with a cliff-hanger. Buy Links: Amazon US ¦ UK ¦ Barnes & Noble ¦ iBooks ¦ Kobo EXCERPT I had a suspicion that my magic faded with age, like estrogen, draining youth and power from my body, turning me into an old crone soaked in wine, and leaving me with an excessive amount of bitter baggage. At least, that was how I felt at thirty-one, past my prime. I’d stupidly wasted my youth on a man who put off marrying me for so long, only to dump me at the altar and banish me from his life and his kingdom, all in a matter of minutes. I groaned, settling down onto a tree stump caked with a questionable fungus. The drizzle of rain dissolved into a mist, wrapping around me in a blanket of wet gloom and matching my mood. Anger bubbled inside me like a cauldron of witch’s brew, ready to explode and destroy its next victim. Could this be early menopause? I thought with a sudden pang of panic. “Ahem,” I cleared my throat and shook the thought from my head, determined to focus on something I’d not tried yet—the darker creatures of the forest. My spells usually involved singing birds, cuddly bunnies, and doe-eyed deer. But there was one time, a while back, I’d accidentally summoned a rabid alligator. Of course, I’d hidden up in a tree until he left, but I always wondered if my charms could be used for more than sweet, princessy qualities, as my ex used to put it. You know, those things I’d lost when I became a worthless humanish bag of bones. “Fa-la-la-la, rawr, la-la-la,” I tried, bellowing out the lowest spooky tone I could. But nothing happened. “I said, fa-la-la-la, rawr, la-la-la!” I screamed into the clearing, but only the windswept leaves echoed back. I scuffed my boot into the dirt, kicking a pebble across the way before taking a deep breath and trying again. “La-la-la, rawr, la-la-la.” My voice rang out as it had years ago when my magic was strong and powerful enough to command an army of squirrels, nibbling the ankles of all my enemies. A blanket of clouds thickened overhead, forming a sinister chill in the air. The hair on the back of my neck prickled. I had a feeling I wasn’t alone anymore. “La-la-la, rawr, la-la-la,” I sang again, louder. Footsteps, much heavier than a bunny’s, pattered behind me. I stood up and threw my hands in the air, still singing and ignoring the feeling of someone watching me. I twirled, singing in harmony with the wind in the trees, the drizzle of rain, and the low hum of the clouds growing overhead. My senses awakened to the natural life around me, and for the first time in a year, I felt whole again. I spun around the clearing, singing my heart out and skipping through the mud until—as my luck would have it—a man, not a beastly creature under my command, walked into my life. “You rang,” said a deep voice behind me. I turned to see a tall, dark figure stepping out of the shadows. His mouth curled, as if on the edge of laughter, displaying a glimpse of two deadly sharp fangs. “Holy shit. I summoned a vampire.” I stood frozen, unable to look away. About the Author Fritzi Cox is a dark soul with a wicked sense of humor. About the book Bound together across time, two women will discover a powerful connection through one survivor’s story of hope in the darkest days of a war-torn world. Present Day—With the grand opening of her new art gallery and a fairytale wedding just around the corner, Sera James feels she’s stumbled into a charmed life—until a brutal legal battle against fiancé William Hanover threatens to destroy the perfectly planned future she’s planned before it even begins. Now, after an eleventh-hour wedding ceremony and a callous arrest, William faces a decade in prison for a crime he never committed, and Sera must battle the scathing accusations that threaten her family and any hope for a future. 1942—Kája Makovsky narrowly escaped occupied Prague in 1939, and was forced to leave her half-Jewish family behind. Now a reporter for the Daily Telegraph in England, Kája discovers the terror has followed her across the Channel in the shadowy form of the London Blitz. When she learns Jews are being exterminated by the thousands on the continent, Kája has no choice but to return to her mother city, risking her life to smuggle her family to freedom and peace. Connecting across a century through one little girl, a Holocaust survivor with a foot in each world, these two women will discover a kinship that springs even in the darkest of times. In this tale of hope and survival, Sera and Kája must cling to the faith that sustains and fight to protect all they hold dear—even if it means placing their own futures on the line. What I thought of the book Kristy Cambron has focused yet again on an aspect of World War II that I didn't know anything about before reading A Sparrow in Terezin: what happened with the children in the concentration camps. This is not an easy read, but it is spellbinding. It can be heart-rending, yet is full of hope and faith in God. It will give you new courage, and strength in God for the trials you may face. The setting alternates between World War II and modern day, yet the two tie in well together. I found I preferred the World War II setting, since I do enjoy history. About the author Kristy Cambron fancies life as a vintage-inspired storyteller. Her second novel, A Sparrow in Terezin, was named Library Journal Reviews’ “Pick of the Month (Christian Fiction)” for February 2015. Cambron is an art/design manager at TheGROVEstory.com storytelling ministry. She holds a degree in art history from Indiana University and has nearly 15 years of experience in instructional design and communications for a Fortune-100 company. She lives in Indiana with her husband and three football-loving sons, where she can probably be bribed with a coconut mocha latte and a good Christian fiction read. The Big Tilt by Dan Flanigan is the second book in the Peter O’Keefe series. Peter O’Keefe has had some close shaves in his life, not least the Vietnam War and a showdown with a crime boss called Mr. Canada in the Arizona desert. A year on from that, O’Keefe finds himself in deep trouble in his own hometown, when an old school crush is murdered. But something doesn’t seem right. A friend of O’Keefe’s, Mike Harrigan, is in serious trouble, accused of things he didn’t do and O’Keefe now has a price on his head. Going deep into the criminal underworld, O’Keefe begins to uncover things that some people would prefer stayed hidden and his life is suddenly in the balance. Can he uncover the truth in time or will he become another statistic? The Big Tilt (Peter O’Keefe Book 2) by Dan Flanigan is a thrilling read. I did find the beginning a little confusing but I suspect that’s because I haven’t read the first book – this is one of those series where the books need to be read in order. There is more than one story here, at least three different ones, but they are woven together with all becoming clear at the end. It is written well, very clear and easy-to-understand language (no jargon, which is a bonus), and a great plot, albeit a little complex at times. There is plenty of action and the author’s legal background really shone through at times. A gripping tale, this has some great characters, believable, real people who grow throughout the story. With plenty of action, this is one story you won’t want to put down.
Perhaps the finest piece of art from the so-called Dark Ages, this book is a rare artifact from that troubled time.
