Agave 'Awakening Angel' is a 2024 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a Hans Hansen selection of Agave ovatifolia 'Frosty Blue'. The new growth of this oddity emerges in spring with white-centered foliage, that ages to solid blue by the end of the summer. Because of this color change, Agave 'Awakening Angel' is as winter hardy as the species, compared to most variegated forms which lose their winter hardiness. So far, our plants have endured 11 degrees F, with no issues. Expect a 3' tall x 6' wide, non-offsetting clump at maturity.
The tequila agave is native to the states of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit, and Aguascalientes in Mexico. The plant favors altitudes of more than 1,500 meters (5,000 ft) and grows in rich and sandy soils. Blue agave plants grow into large succulents, with spiky fleshy leaves, that can reach over 2 meters (7 ft) in height. Blue agaves sprout a stalk when about five years old that can grow an additional 5 meters (16 ft); they are topped with yellow flowers. Agave nizandensis 'Double Stripe' is a 2020 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of the endangered Oaxacan (Southern Mexico) native, shade-loving, slope-residing century plant. We first selected a seedling of the unarmed, squid-like century plant that had a prominent gold center pattern, and then waited patiently for a streak to appear in a single leaf. Five years later, we were finally able to isolate the streak into variegated edges down both sides of the leaf. This was followed by another five years building up stock. Agave nizandensis 'Double Stripe' has been slow to propagate, but we are thrilled to finally release it in limited numbers. Because of the extremely brittle nature of the leaves, please be aware that it will most likely arrive with a few broken leaves, despite our best packing...be assured it will re-grow.

Agave rosettes produce flowers on tall stalks, after which the rosette that flowered dies, but not before producing seed or offsets. Some species take 100 years to flower, which is where the common name “century plant” arose, but in cultivation many species will bloom in 10-20 years. Why grow Agave? Agaves are valuable elements in xeric and desert gardens, rock gardens, and succulent containers. Use them as focal points or to contrast with other shapes and textures. Century plants provide distinctive architectural form to gardens and make highly collectible container subjects. How to care for Agave Century plants require excellent drainage and generally grow best rocky or sandy mineral soils in climates with dry winters and only occasional summer rain. To grow successfully in wetter climates, provide extra care to ensure good drainage, planting them on slopes or at an angle with extra gravel in their soil. A gravel mulch can help to move excess water away from the plants and reduce diseases from soil splashing on the leaves. Agave ovatifolia 'Lava Flow' is a 2019 Plant Delights Nursery introduction of an odd mutant that we selected years ago from Agave 'Vanzie' that didn't have any teeth. Okay, having no teeth is actually common with some species here in rural North Carolina, but not so much in the century plant world. This amazing Agave 'Lava Flow' forms a 3' tall x 5' mound of slick, wavy, glaucous blue leaves, whose form resembles the lava flow from a volcano. Since this is a non-offsetting clone, it took a bit of horticultural mutilation to entice it to produce enough offsets to share...what happens in the propagation department stays in the propagation department. We think Agave 'Lava Flow' is an exceptional selection and hope you will also.
