Do you do a prewrite for your posts? Discover three ways outlining a blog post saves you time, and what a solid outline should include. Back in high school, I totally didn't understand the concept of a prewrite. If my teachers had the nerve to require an outline, I just made mine after the fact.
I am always looking for ways to streamline data collection. In the past, I was only tracking the behavior of students if it was related to an IEP goal, or if we were beginning to notice a spike in behavior. And while this worked, it isn't always enough. This year I found a way to track all of my students' behavior in less than one minute a day... AND I don't even need to pick up a pen! To make this happen, I use two things: Google Forms (check below for the FREEBIE!) and an Amazon Fire tablet. While you don't need the tablet to use Google Forms, it does make it more convenient for staff to document behavior without having to access the computer. Google Forms is free and easy to use. It is basically a survey that gathers and analyzes any type of information. I will be honest, I have always been a bit resistant to using a tablet for data collection for a couple of reasons. 1. I give all of my tech to my students. 2. TECH IS EXPENSIVE! (or so I thought...) The Amazon Fire tablet is actually pretty inexpensive. You can typically find them for less than $50, which is a killer deal. Now that I have the tablet I find that I use it for far more than just data collection, but that's a topic for another post! Now that you know what I use, here is how you can make it for yourself! First, download a copy of the Google Forms Digital Classroom Behavior Log. Open the file and click on the link. You will be prompted to save a copy of the Google Forms template. Next, type all of your students' names in the left column. You can also change titles for each behavior rating to meet the needs of your classroom. And... that's it! Your form is all set up! Pretty easy, right!?! Now it is time to give it a test run and view your responses. Don't worry, you can delete your responses later. Click on the preview icon in the upper right corner. This will bring you to the actual form that you will fill out to track behavior. Select one of the behavior options for each student and add a note at the bottom to detail any incidents that happened during the day. Then hit the submit button to record your information. Click "submit another response" to head back to the form. Are you ready to take a look at your responses? Click on the orange pencil in the upper right corner to get into editing mode. Next, click on the responses tab. This will give you a your data in a bar graph. Hover over each bar to get more detailed information. You can also download the responses in a Google Sheets file. This is a great option if you need to find information from a specific date or time period. Now that you have had a chance to play around with the form, you may want to delete the information that you submitted so that you can start fresh with your students. Just click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and select "delete all responses." This Google Form is easy to access from anywhere with an internet connection. All you need to do is access the URL. This can be done by creating a bookmark, or saving the link to your desktop. Would you like to see a video of these steps in action? Click on the video below and I will walk you through of the entire process. Are you ready to give it a try? I would love to hear how it goes for you! (This post contains Amazon affiliate links. I can't believe this school year is almost over! I have only 5 days of school left, Friday is our last day. I will miss my kiddos dearly but am super excited to start my summer vacation. Next school year will bring so many changes for me~~new partner teacher (SUPER excited!!), best friend coming back to teach at my school (YAHOO!!), my baby girl is starting 8th grade at another school (BOO HOO!), and 3rd grade will switch classes next year (SCARED!!)!! I will need the summer to get ready for my 27+ new students next year. I love planning over the summer and will need this summer to prepare for switching classes. Switching won't be so bad, I will teach religion to 2 classes. I am really happy about not teaching science and social studies too!! I always have a hard time fitting these 2 subjects in on a daily basis. My students have been really busy these last 2 weeks doing my favorite all-time writing assignment~~~My Favorite Summer Vacation! I just love this writing and really LOVE how the finished essays turn out. Check them out below. You can click (HERE) to download the sunglasses template. You need to make 2 copies and tape them together. See below!! This year I decided to give out Candy Awards. I literally ran all over town looking for each type of candy. I even had my honey helping me (He was so cute going from store to store!)! I had the hardest time finding Lifesavers (Who would believe that?!). You can download your own set of Candy Awards from Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits. I found these awards during the summer and have been saving them all year. Check them out below! I can't wait to share them with my students tomorrow!!! Here is just a taste of what the awards look like! They are precious!!!! Here is a fun project I did with my class last week. I found this idea on Pinterest and just HAD to try it with my class! Look at the pictures below and try to see the shape! I am in LOVE with this!!

April Round Up 2 comments Freebies, Monthly Round Up, Social Studies April is just around the corner. Can you believe it? How is time flying by so quickly? Well, if you are in the market for some fun activities for the month of April, you've come to the right place! When I think of April, I think of spring and all things earthy. Did you know that Arbor Day takes place in April? Celebrating the importance of trees ties in perfectly with Earth Day, which also takes place in April! This quick and easy bulletin board idea would be a great extension activity when learning about Arbor Day (or Earth Day). This craft can be assembled using only two pieces and the students write directly on the craft, talk about easy peasy! You could have your students write a cinquain, list poem (that's what the sample shows), or an acrostic poem. Don't forget, April is also poetry month! You can grab the templates for this quick and easy craft HERE. I love directed drawings. A lot. I try to do at least one or two a month. It's a great way to help students develop confidence in their drawing skills, and it's also a great way to work on those listening and reasoning skills. And even though everyone is following the same directions, the drawings always come out different and unique. This month, we'll be drawing some butterflies. It just wouldn't be spring without butterflies! This drawing would be a great way to incorporate some art into a butterfly life cycle unit too. When the drawing part is done, you can let your students dress up their drawings with watercolors, oil pastels, crayons, or whatever! The example shown above was done using watercolor. You could encourage your students to paint a scenic background, or let them choose one solid color. They are the artists, let them decide! You can grab the directions for this drawing HERE. I don't know that I could go through the month of April without covering Earth Day. It's a great way to remind the students of ways that they can help take care of our planet. I've used this mini book the past few years to introduce Earth Day. I love that it's interactive and tasks the students with responding in a variety of ways. After reading various books about Earth Day and learning about ways to take care of our our planet, I love playing a game of I Spy where the students evaluate the sentences printed on each card. This version gives the students practice with critical thinking as they determine whether a sentence is fact or opinion. I love that I Spy engages students and gets them moving around while they learn. You can read more about I Spy here. One of my favorite things to do with Earth Day is to take my students on a nature walk. What better way to gain an appreciation of nature than to spend some time out in nature. It's like a mini field trip. Hehe. Seriously though, the kids always love this. Any time they get to head outdoors, they are happy campers. This little journal is fun way to keep them focused as we explore the outdoors. You can find these, and other activities in my Earth Day unit on TPT. I'm a huge fan of class books. We make them all.the.time. in my classroom. My class recently made a class book with a twist. What's that you ask? It's a super cute class coloring book! Each student created a page to be included. I made each student a copy of the coloring book and sent it home for them to color over Spring Break (but, you could send it home any time you want, of course). We made these back in November too and they were a hit! You can read all about it HERE. You can grab the templates to make your very own class coloring book HERE (you can also use these templates to make a traditional class book). I truly hope you were able to use an idea or two today. Thanks for stopping by! DON'T FORGET IT: PIN IT! Share It:

Hi! I recently finished rewriting my K-6 art curriculum plan. We are required to do this every 4 years. You can see my first blog post about organizing curriculum that I wrote a few years back. I use the curriculum plan as a guide for my yearly planning. If students are interested in one area of art more than another, I tend to adapt my plans. If I have a brilliant idea for something new I want to try with … Read more... →
