Hi everyone! First of all I can't believe this is my first blog post in over a year! My mat leave flew by, but I'm looking forward to being back at work in August! Speaking of being back at work, I recently posted to my Instagram stories about how I was starting to prepare my mail bags for this year.. and you guys had all the questions! So I'm going to answer most of them here and I have some free downloads for you as well! We use these mail bags to send any important papers home (classroom notices, papers from the office etc.) We have our communication folders in there year round (more on that in a bit) and eventually our poetry books (which has our weekly shared reading poems) go in there every Friday as well. So it needs to be big enough to hold a file folder and a duotang. In the past I used the Dollarama courier bags but this year I found the quality to be so bad.. most of the ones I saw in the store looked like they were already falling apart! But then I popped in to my local independent dollar store and found these clear poly zip folders that seemed much sturdier so I snatched them up! Dollarama has similar ones but again the quality seemed way worse.. so I'm hoping these hold up! I paid $1.75 each for them. UPDATE: So I had originally grabbed 10 of these and then the owner of the dollar store said he could order me 20 more... well they didn't end up coming in in time for the September so I ended up going back to the Dollarama courier bags. The second time I looked they actually looked to be better quality again and they ended up holding up the entire year like usual! If you are looking for a cheaper alternative I know lots of teachers also use XL freezer bags instead too! If you want my EDITABLE mail bag label shown above (it also comes in black & white and in a photo version) you can click here or on the image below: In the photo above you see the mail bag placed on top of a box. That's what we keep our mail bags in. Each student gets a hanging file and after I check for notes every morning their mail bags go in there. This makes it easy to store notices for students who are away! I use this file box from Staples and these hanging files (also from Staples). And I use these tabs and write their names so I can easily find their spot. I write them in attendance order, JK's then SK's. I also make a file for extra copies. On the cover, we include our school name, school address, teachers name(s), classroom number, school phone number and what time to call by to report absences (this is ideally) and school hours. I used fake information (except our names, those are real) just for confidentiality sake.. so no, I don't work at John Lennon Public School and don't call that number! 😝 On the left side in the inside we staple the classroom calendar/newsletter. The back has that month's newsletter. I took a picture but afterwards a couple of you guys pointed out my typos and I didn't want to retake all the pictures.. so I removed that one but you can see what my newsletters look like in the picture below: If you want my editable calendar & newsletter templates you can click here or on the image below: And on the right side we staple the communication log. On the back we include our important dates (holidays, PA days and information about our class schedule). We glue the paper for the front and back on the file folder and laminate. Then we cut them out and staple on the calendar/newsletter and the communication log. When it's time to add a new calendar/newsletter or communication log, we just staple it on top! I always leave extra copies of the communication log in one of the hanging files in my mail bag box. You can download an editable communication folder PowerPoint file for free! Click here or on the image below to grab your copy! If you want the file to format correctly and/or you want to use the same fonts as me, you will need to download KG Primary Penmanship (free for personal use), install them on your computer and then restart your computer before opening the file: I hope that was helpful! I hope you are having an awesome summer! - Yukari

As most of you know, I work with preschool aged students in a public elementary school. All of the students on my caseload are in our full-day program. Our school has used quite a few Character Education programs throughout the years, but sometimes I find myself looking for more practical, concrete ways to help students deal with conflicts. These are not the larger, bullying-type conflicts that we discuss often in the Character Ed programs, these are the daily recess squabbles, the bickering/arguing, and the tattling that can occur throughout the week. With these types of conflict, I don't want to be the constant referee, negotiating both sides in every disagreement. I want to empower my students to choose between a variety of strategies and develop these necessary skills themselves. While looking for some of these online, I was contacted by Kelso's Choice and couldn't believe my luck. This program seemed to be addressing the skills I was looking for in a very kid-friendly, concrete method. I am excited to share this product review in case you are looking for a similar program. Disclaimer: Although Kelso's Choice sent me these items, all opinions are 100% honest and my own, and I never recommend something I wouldn't or haven't used in my own class. Kelso's Nine Choices The main character in this Character Ed program is a cartoon frog named Kelso. He is present in every K-3 lesson, but not in the lessons for grades 4-5, which I appreciate. He demonstrates all of the strategies that students can choose to solve a small (not big) problem. In grades 2-3, there is a wheel with all of the available choices and I absolutely love that visual. There are nine choices and lessons to introduce each one, along with a story from Willow Pond to help students role-play and solve these small problems for the animal characters. While there are nine choices, the program is very explicit that a student should try two and then get an adult if the conflict persists. There is an entire lesson at the beginning about small and big problems to help students differentiate what needs immediate adult intervention versus something they can work together to solve. The program also emphasizes that students are strong enough and smart enough to solve these small problems-- I love how much it is repeated throughout the teacher guide. Large posters accompany the product and I appreciated the ongoing visual. They cover each of the nine choices: Go to another game Talk it out Share and take turns Ignore it Walk away Tell them to (please) stop Apologize Make a deal Wait and cool off As you can see, these are common strategies that many of the students have used before, often in combination with each other. What I was grateful for was the common, explicit instruction around all nine of these to create a system in the classroom, on the playground, in the lunchroom, and beyond. Plus, the explicit instruction can do a world of good for our students who struggle with these choices and social skills. Working together as a class on each of these in a systematic way can let every single student be "in it together" and have a common language and framework to use as a group. Program Materials Included in the Conflict Management set was everything you could ever need to launch this with your classroom. There is a very comprehensive Leader Guide filled with grade-specific lessons, extensions, reproducibles, parent and staff letters, and stories. Lessons are in-depth, but quick, and encourage you to engage in some meaningful conversations with your students. Take a peek at the Table of Contents HERE. A CD helps with making copies for your classroom. Two frog puppets are also included: Kelso and Lily. Since I teach third grade, I offer these up as an option, but not as a requirement. My daughter is in second grade, and she is still loving any and all activities with a puppet, so I'm glad they were included for the K-3 group. Additional cut-out characters can help bring the stories and role-plays to life. There are also some great lessons provided to help use the puppets with your class. Inside the Leader's Guide are the Willow Pond stories, but they are also compiled in a full-color book that would be perfect for your classroom library. The font is large and these stories could even be used as a shared reading opportunity. The provided DVD has an animated Kelso reviewing all of the choices and how they can be used in students' lives. And, most importantly, there are huge posters to display in your classroom, hallway, lunchroom, etc. You can see the difference between the K-3 version and the 4-5 version above. There are five of each and they are BIG at 24x36"! If you are teaching grades 4-5, the authors knew that Kelso the frog would not be as big of a hit with the older grades, and the lessons are adjusted accordingly. There are photos of real kids and much more in-depth scenarios and questions. Even "Share and take turns" has been removed and choices are divided up into verbal and nonverbal. It's a nice jump and will keep kids engaged even if they've been learning these choices since Kindergarten. One of the components to this program that I really love is the inclusion of every staff member and family member in the program. They realize that a lot of these small conflicts arise outside of a structured classroom environment, and this program is designed to work for just those scenarios. Included are reproducibles that the on-duty adult can use to support and/or congratulate those students who used the choices to solve a conflict. There are letters and activities for students to take home to help educate the parents and certificates of achievement for every student as they complete the program. There's even a song they can learn and maybe even sing schoolwide? The authors, Barbara Clark, PhD and Diane Hipp, CPS not only knew what they were doing when it came to conflict resolution, they knew how to implement it into a schoolwide system and make it doable for teachers and staff. There is no extra fluff to dig through, nor are there scripted lessons that kill meaningful learning. The lessons are packed with goodness and could easily give students new experiences with these choices for their entire elementary experience. Overall Thoughts I really like Kelso's Choice Conflict Management program and could see it becoming a part of a successful school's character education collection. It is practical, simple in its use but effective in its strategies, and is a one-stop-shop for an entire elementary school. I can imagine School Counselors loving this program as a way to help give all kids common language and skills about solving small problems in an empowering way. There are plenty of activities to keep this a yearlong and elementary career-long program for students. Especially with its extensions into 4th and 5th grade, I can see how kids of all ages can use these simple, but powerful choices to solve their ever-changing conflicts. With every adult in their daily sphere reiterating these choices, it gives students a solid framework to address small conflicts and feel empowered instead of frustrated. Find more information at: https://kelsoschoice.com. There are free downloads and loads of extra information for you to peruse. There is also information about a 30-day Free Trial, if you think you would like to experiment before you make the schoolwide decision. Have you used Kelso's Choice in your school? I would love to hear about your experiences with it in a schoolwide system!

There have been some huge changes around here! First, you may have noticed that I got a new look! AnD I CouLdn't be MorE in LOVE! Megan from A Bird in Hand Designs seriously went above and beyond what I asked, to create more than I even knew I was looking for! I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a brand new or blog redesign such as mine! You may have also noticed that we tweaked my title a bit and added the whole "...beyond" component as well! As those following lil ole' me know, I am no longer in the classroom with my sweet second graders, but rather, this year, I am working as the Dual Language/ELL coach for our building and have the opportunity to thus work with all grade levels and the teachers on a day to day basis :)! I am so excited to unveil this new blog design to go along with my first official post sharing some of the things I have been doing with the kiddos in my new position! This past week, I set up with each of the dual language staff members an hour long classroom visit in which I did a read aloud/lesson with the students and then stuck around to see how they interact and work with their teachers as well! I had so much fun getting to know all of the classes and wanted to share some of those lessons I did with you all! In the primary grades (K-2) I read the story "El Libro Fantástico" by Leonid Gore. This is a story about a group of animals that find a book and use it in a variety of silly ways (hat, table, house, etc.) as they are not sure what its purpose is. Then a little boy comes along and shows them that books are for "reading" and sits and reads the story to them. This is a great story to use as a review of book purpose at the beginning of the year with the little ones! Before reading, I thought I would do a little sort with the classes to activate their background knowledge. I had a blast recruiting one of our staff members to help me in taking a variety of silly photos enacting the different animal scenarios in the text. These photos were then used in the sort before reading our story! Here is what one of the finished sorts looked like: After doing our sort we of course read the story reflecting back on our sort as a reminder throughout of what the purpose of a book is! In our intermediate (grades 3-5) classrooms, I did a different activity/lesson that I thought was a little more grade appropriate :)! I selected one of my favorite poems entitled "Me x 2" written by Jane Medina. This poem is one compiled in a collection of poems from the text "Amazing Faces". Take a moment to read it...I think you will see immediately why I love it so much. Isn't it beautifully written...and I may add so incredibly fitting for all of the students and staff that I work with? After reading the poem, we had a discussion in each of the classrooms about the "Author's Message". Students worked to think-pair-share their ideas using the key phrase "The author wants me to understand that...". After sharing out as a class we then brainstormed ways in which being bilingual truly is a gift and a "blast" and created this chart together! (I apologize you can see a bit of my other chart behind!...that's what happens when you travel from room to room ;)!) I told the teachers they were welcome to hang these posters in their rooms and as the students thought of more reasons throughout the year as to "Why being bilingual is a blast..." they could add them to them! Hoping it is a good refresher/reminder of why they are taking part in the dual language program! Looking forward to sharing more with you all as the year progresses! Every week truly is a new adventure :)!
