The tender interaction between the boy and the kittens highlights the beauty of giving, even when one has little to give. Set against a backdrop of adversity, this touching scene reminds us to cherish and be grateful for our own blessings. Another 2nd grade focused post coming at you! However, hopefully other grade levels can take something away from it as well! TEKS covered: 2.12A, 2.12B, 2.12C, 2.12D, 2.13A, 2.13D Learning about government can be overwhelming for little ones, hey maybe even for adults too, but it does have importance! How can you make it engaging and bring it down to a level that is easy to grasp? Well hopefully we did that for our sweet second graders when the teachers taught this unit. We taught this unit over the course of 3 weeks and it did not integrate into reading because we were teaching fairy tales at the time so we had to be strategic with this particular unit and how we used our time for it. Here is a quick glimpse of how I envisioned we break it down within those few weeks. So if you read the last post I did about natural hazards/disasters, I said I typically will give my teachers an example/answer key/skeleton of any anchor charts I envision for a unit. This helps me to see if I need to tweak it at all, get feedback, and helps make their life a bit easier. Right below you will see the smartboard I created that matches the kids brochure they were filling out as they learned about each level of government. That way the teacher had an option to integrate technology as well as make it large for everyone to follow along easier. Directly above is an example of an anchor chart and answer key I created for the teachers to use as well if they wanted it. It also included some essential questions that align to the TEKS. So basically this chart is built on throughout the unit NOT all in one day!! Grab the Smartboard download HERE (both versions included) ***The anchor chart above is not setup in the printable resource as a typical 8.5x11 size since it is designed to be printed large. You may want to preview on print screen, test print, or adjust printer settings before you print for youself as an anchor chart.*** We chunked the unit by teaching each level of government and then tying it all together at the end. This chart is intended to be printed on a plotter aka poster maker. We are very blessed to have one so I was able to print off the skeleton of the chart and the teachers can laminate to use each year still utilizing the "make it with the kids" approach. It just gives them guidance. So here is what the kids used as their interactive journal for the unit-the brochure! This was also filled out throughout the unit. Some teachers elected the kids to glue it in their interactive notebooks and pulled it out when they needed it or took it up at the end of each learning time and handed it back out when they were completing the next section. You will notice I made them little pictures of each person to glue down, however, after completing it I decided not to include those in the download because well, if you don't live in Texas you won't have the same officials and eventually when the president changes I would have to go back and redo the whole resource. Sorry I just don't have that kind of time haha. You can easily download pictures of your officials and make them small with multiple to a page. So in order to make this easy I have included the TEXAS version of all you see AND a generic version (for those not in TX but teach levels of government). So when you download just make sure to pay attention to which pages you are printing :) Hopefully this helped you in some way and makes teaching government a tad easier and fun! Please don't hesitate to ask questions-sometimes I leave things out unintentionally because, well, my brain.is.tired.and.I.am.human. :) Head over to take a peek and see if you'd like to add this resource to your teaching files! I've got a Spaceman Freebie but first, I have some new products added to my Teachers Pay Teachers store: ⤤ SUPER EASY to implement - GREAT for the first weeks of school!!!! Click on the pictures to check them out or click HERE to visit my Teachers Pay Teachers store and click HERE to get a FREE kit each month!! Wonder how many times I've had to remind students to use spaces between words when writing? Maybe a million! I've been wanting some "spacemen" to help students remember to use those spaces, so I decided to make some. If you would like to make some too, I have a free download for you right here: {Click here or on the picture to download} BTW, I post a lot of freebies on my blog - if you don't want to miss any of them, make sure to click on this button follow me on bloglovin': There are a couple of ways to do this - the easiest would be to print on cardstock, laminate, and cut into strips. They can be used this way, might get a little worn after a while but it would be easy enough to replace them each school year. To make them super sturdy, I wanted to make mine to fit on large craft sticks (the kind sized 6 inches x 3/4 inch). I bought these at Walmart: I tried using Mod Podge at first, and that worked good, but I realized I had a MUCH easier way to do it so I broke out my trusty Xyron machine with the laminate/permanent adhesive cartridge: This: That's the smaller one, that works just as good, I have the larger one here: I got mine years ago and it's a lot cheaper now! I loaded in the printout of Spacemen... and out they came, laminated with permanent adhesive on the back. Then I just cut out on the lines (I used my paper cutter) and peeled the backing off to stick on the craft stick. I have these sized to fit the craft sticks exactly with just a little extra on the top and bottom. I made that extra space on purpose - here's a little trick to trim off that top and bottom and make it perfectly molded to the stick. Use a fingernail file! Just use a downward motion pressing the file to the stick where the paper is hanging over. It files the paper and laminate away and shapes it to the edges of the stick: Now they are ready to use!!

Our family was excited to review Peter and the Wolf from Maestro Classics. We have reviewed for them in the past, so we knew what a treat this would be! I remember, as a kid, listening to my Peter and the Wolf record on my little, white, Holly Hobby record player. It was fun to share the story with my kids. What I didn't know was that composer Prokofiev began writing music at the age of 5! This we learned from the teaching tracks on the CD we received. The first time we listened to it, I put it on our school room computer and listened with just my students. The second time, I popped it in the van CD player on the way to take the high schoolers to school. Their school is not very far away, but because of traffic, it takes about 20 minutes to get there in the morning, so I knew we'd have time to get into the story. The CD begins with an explanation of which instruments represent which animals in the story. This is very helpful for kids, otherwise they may not have caught on to the meaning of the music. Then the story begins, with a few sentences being read, and then the music for that portion being played. I found an instrument worksheet for the kids to do to introduce them to different types of musical instruments. I loved the way my older kids got into it! When they introduced the music for the cat, Sam said, "I can picture it playing with a ball of yarn!" When the duck got swallowed, he said, "Dangit! I liked the duck!" I found it interesting that this version of the story ends differently than the one I remember as a child. In addition to being a wonderful story all on it's own, Peter and the Wolf is a fabulous jumping off point for a study of Russia. I told my kids, "My great grandparents were Germans who immigrated from Ukraine when it was part of Russia." So we looked up the Russian flag and colored maps of Russia. I played the musical (instruments only) track of the CD while we worked on our coloring pages and worksheets. I've mentioned that Katie has just learned the names of all the continents. Now it's time to start filling in some of the countries. She learned where Russia is on our Hugg-A-Planet. We also took this opportunity to learn about Russian nesting dolls. I think it would be fun to paint a set of these someday. And we learned about wolves, of course! Because of what we've been learning in science, the kids were able to deduce that wolves are vertebrates and mammals. Maestro Classics offers curriculum guides on their website for all their fabulous tales, as well as little activity books nestled within the CD case. The curriculum guide was my inspiration for coming up with other Russia related learning activities to tie into our listening experience. One of the suggestions was to watch the movie Anastasia, which we found on Netflix and watched as a family. If you have a road trip planned over the upcoming holidays, you'll want to check out all the great audio dramas that Maestro Classics has to offer and bring some along to keep your family entertained on the road. These classic children's musicals come in CD or MP3 form, so you can take them along in whatever form you prefer. You can connect with Maestro Classics on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.
