This Reading Comprehension / Informational Text is suitable for advanced to proficient ESL learners or native English speakers. The text explores the emergence and history of apartheid in South Africa. Translated from Afrikaans, apartheid means ‘apartness’ and it was an ideology supported by the National Party (NP) government introduced in South Africa in 1948. Apartheid laws attempted to stop all inter-marriage and social integration between black and white people and forced the different racial groups to live separately and “develop” separately in grossly unequal terms. After carefully reading the text, students are required to complete some comprehension exercises including comprehension questions, a definition match, a multiple choice exercise and a crossword. The text can also be used for vocabulary building purposes. An ideal activity for Black History month. (celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, and in October for the Netherlands & the United Kingdom) Total number of pages: 7 Answer key included

Here are a lovely family group of Swiftlets feeding their young and building edible nests! This amazing antique engraving is from 1887 Here are a lovely family group of Swiftlets feeding their young and building edible nests! Swiftlets are birds native to southern Asia, south Pacific islands, and northeastern Australia, all within the tropical and subtropical regions. They are in many respects typical members of the Apodidae, having narrow wings for fast flight, with a wide gape and small reduced beaks surrounded by bristles for catching insects in flight. What distinguishes many but not all species from other swifts and indeed almost all other birds is their ability to use a simple but effective form of echolocation to navigate in total darkness through the chasms and shafts of the caves where they roost at night and breed. The nests of some species are built entirely from threads of their saliva and are collected for the famous Chinese delicacy bird's nest soup. 'Edible Nest Soup Birds' is printed on quality heavy-weight paper. It's smooth and flat with just a bit of tanning at the borders that one finds on paper that's 134 years old. It measures 6.5" x 10" overall. The impression is fabulously fresh and detailed as if it were printed only yesterday. (Zoom in for a closer look; it really is spectacular!) Matted, framed, and displayed as a gallery grouping, these wonderful vintage natural history prints are simply spectacular. (Please note that the framed examples in the last photo are just to show how this might look when it's framed. Your antique print will come unframed.) Red Peppercorns, usually the fourth component in mixed peppercorns, is not actually a member of the pepper family although it is often marketed as such. This faintly sweet spice from Reunion Island and South America does enhance the flavour of the other true peppers. However, black, white and green peppercorns are all products of the same plant but each is harvested and handled differently. History of Red Peppercorns:- Red Peppercorns are also known as Peruvian pepper ,American Pepper, The Peruvian Peppertree, Escobilla, False Pepper, Molle del Peru, Pepper Tree, Peppercorn Tree, Californian Pepper Tree, Pirul and Peruvian Mastic It is an evergreen tree that grows to around 15 metres in height and is a native of the Peruvian Andes. It now grows all over the Central parts of South America and has been naturalised into South Africa. The word molle in Schinus molle comes from mulli, the Quechua word for the tree. The Inca nation used the sweet outer part of ripe fruit to make a drink. The berries were carefully and painstakingly rubbed to avoid mixing with the bitter inner parts, the mixture was then strained and left for a few days to produce a drink. It was also boiled down for syrup or mixed with maize to make nourishing kind of soup. There is also significant archaeological evidence that the fruits were used extensively in the Central Andes around 550-1000 AD for producing an alcoholic drink referred to as Chicha Under the terms of Etsy's Medical Drug Claims policy, sellers on Etsy are forbidden to share knowledge of the traditional or medicinal uses of their products.
