Per i Maori il moko kauae, tradizionale tatuaggio del mento femminile, viene considerato una manifestazione fisica della propria vera identità. Si crede che ogni donna Maori porti un moko dentro di sé, vicino al cuore. Quando è pronto a emergere, il tatuatore lo porta semplicemente in superficie. I Maori sono la popolazione nativa originaria della Nuova Zelanda, che venne colonizzata all'inizio dell'800 dalla Gran Bretagna e che, nonostante il trattato di Waitangi, vide l'acceso scontro fra coloni inglesi e popolazione locale, con quest'ultima che perse praticamente tutte le proprie terre entro gli anni '60 del XIX secolo. Per i Maori il tatuaggio era, e per moltissimi ancor oggi, un rito di passaggio, che era da rispettare e rendere unico. Ogni tatuaggio è un'opera a sé stante: Non esistono due Moko Kauae identici Nelle immagini sottostanti, realizzate a inizio '900, si nota l'imponente influenza della cultura colonica nello stile di abbigliamento delle donne che, pur mantenendo un'identità unica e inconfondibile rispetto alle donne europee dell'epoca, hanno già iniziato a cedere la propria identità culturale in vantaggio di quella dei coloni europei. In queste immagini si osservano i primi vagiti dell'odierna globalizzazione occidentale.
