The Battle Of The Nile Night Of August 1, 1798. Engraved By C. Lawrie After George Arnald. From The Book "Illustrations Of English And Scottish History,? Volume II."
If you are a fan of 'The Virginians,' 'Pendennis,' 'Vanity Fair,' 'The History of Henry Esmond,' 'The Luck of Barry Lyndon' or anything else by William Makepeace Thackeray, then you should have this book in your collection. This is a 1st edition, from August 1907, of "Boys of Girls from Thackeray" by Kate Dickinson Sweetser. She also wrote 'Boys and Girls from George Eliot,' 'Ten Girls from Dickens,' and more. The illustrations in this book are by George Alfred Williams; the book was published by Duffield & Company of New York. There is a dated (Christmas 1907) inscription on the front flyleaf. Mustard brown cloth covered boards, with a large black and white pictorial pastedown on the front cover, and stamped white titling on the front cover and spine. Clean endpapers. Binding and hinges are very good. Light wear to boards and spine. The book is 355 pages long. From the preface: "William Makepeace Thackeray - the name is dear to all lovers of classic fiction, who have wandered in enchanted lands, following the fortunes of Colonel Newcome, Becky Sharp, Henry Esmond, and a host of other familiar characters created by the great novelist. To an unusual degree, Thackeray dwells on the childhood and youth of the characters he depicts, lingering fondly and in details over the pranks and pastimes, the school and college days of his heroes and heroines, as though he wished to call especial attention to the interest of that portion of their career." The book is organized into the following chapters: Henry Esmond; The Virginians; Becky Sharp at School; Cuff's Fight with 'Figs'; George Osborne - Rawdon Crawley; Clive and Ethel Newcome; Arthur Pendennis; and Caroline. This book would make a wonderful addition to your antique book or 1st editions collection, or would be a perfect gift for a friend who loves Thackeray! Free local pickup is available in Geneva, IL. If shipped, I will send the book via USPS, with a tracking number. Shipment within one business day of your order. Thanks for looking!
