LOOKING FOR OTHER BAT FLOWER VARIETIES, OR RARE AND UNUSUAL PLANT SEEDS? THEN CHECK OUT THE OTHER STOCK ON OUR ETSY STORE --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Growing wild in the tropical forests of the Yunnan Province, China, this Gothic plant can reach a height of up 36 inches! It grows best in a well-drained, slightly acidic soil and although it appears highly exotic, this beautiful plant is in fact hardy down to -3 degrees Celsius! Growing bat plants from seed is relatively easy. Sow bat plant seed into plug trays filled with a good quality John Innes ‘Seed’ compost, then give them a light covering of compost or horticultural grit. Gently water them in, then seal the tray into a clear polythene bag placing it on the window sill of a warm bright room. Make sure that the tray is out of direct sunlight. Don't hold your breath because - depending on light and heat factors - germination can take anywhere between 1 and 9 months! However, this can be significantly reduced by allowing the seed to soak overnight in warm water before sowing. Once the bat plant seedlings are large enough to handle they will be ready for transplanting into individual pots. Using a good quality ericaceous compost mix, add about 30% horticultural grit or perlite to it for extra drainage. TIP. During the growing season, these young bat plant seedlings must be watered regularly, and because they thrive in humid conditions, give them an occasional misting. During the winter, watering will need to be reduced considerably, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely. To maintain the bat plant in its best condition, move it to a mild, sheltered area such as a conservatory, then re-pot into a larger container once new growth begins in the spring.
These endangered flora are visually and ecologically distinct - and in need of protection.

Tacca Chantrieri Also known as: The Black Bat Plant One of the strangest and most amazing flowers in the plant kingdom. Native to Asian rainforests, where they grow in the loamy understory, often in deep shade. It comes from the Taccaceae family and consists of long-lived, short stemmed, rhizomatous, or tuberous herbaceous plants. Not only are the flowers and filiform bracts dark maroon, but so are the broad bracts that rise up above and behind the flowers. Each flower is about 5-8" across and has long tendrils (whiskers) that hang from it. This variety can grow up to 2-3 feet and can successfully be grown indoors. It will thrive in bright light, but should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Should do well in the same conditions that orchids and many epiphytic ferns grow in, with ample humidity, strong airflow, and moderate light and temperatures. Hardiness zones: 9-11 Plant will take light frost down to 3°C (37°F). Give the plants very little water through the winter and it would be ideal to provide a temperature of 15-18°C (60-65°F). As with any tropical, give the occasional mist spray through the summer. For fertilizer use, Miracle Grow mixed 1/4 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water. Repot every 2-3 years and remove decaying rhizome growth. Germination can take from 1-9 months so be patient. Don't toss out your seed beds thinking they won't germinate! This offer is for 10 seeds. For complete transparency we include payment processing & related fees in our shipping/handling cost.
