Students will learn about fossil evidence of earth's history in this engaging unit on fossil evidence for middle school science.
Teaching rock layers from oldest to youngest? Let kids explore and identify types of rocks, investigate fossils, and have some fun!
STEM Earthquake Challenge - students experiment on cardboard houses & different materials to create the best structure to withstand a simulated earthquake.
This is part of my "pull out" mania this year. I thought it would be fun for students to draw an environment complete with at least three animals and two plants and then discuss adaptations they have that help them survive in that environment on the pull out tab.

This is part 6 of a 7 part hands-on unit study on anatomy of the human body. Create a lung model, measure lung capacity, dissect a lung, play a respiratory relay race, and more! These lessons are geared toward 4th-5th grade level children and their siblings. They were created by another creative mom for our weekly homeschool co-op. We meet each week for 2 1/2 hours and have 33 children between the ages of 1-13. Use these fun lessons with your classroom, family, after school program, camp, or co-
In 2nd grade we are learning about the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas. What better way to learn about this than to have a snowman visit our school and melt away throughout the day? The students really enjoyed watching him change but were a little sad when we "cooked" him into gas ;-) Click HERE for instructions and recording sheet. Fill balloons with water - small, medium, and large - and place in bowls with the tied side down so it will create a flat surface. Lay something on top of the balloons to create a flat surface on top. Once frozen, remove balloon and stack balls using salt to help them adhere to each other. Cut out decorations with felt and stick to ice. Students recorded the changes throughout the day . We also kept a data chart with the water measurements - as the snowman got smaller, the water got deeper! Poor Frosty ;-( The final stage Frosty enters the atmosphere as a gaseous memory of a fantastic day! **Check out this awesome sequencing activity page created by Lauren Lynes! I'm super excited to share my latest 3-D life cycle creation with you. This frog life cycle craft is super special because it contains original art work. I really wanted to use realistic looking frogs for the frog life cycle sequencing cards, and I'm happy to say that I'm happy with the results. Enjoy this frog life cycle for kids fun. Use this 3-D Life Cycle of a Frog craft when you teach about the life cycle of frogs by adding sequencing cards to the water lilies with this So Sweet Craft. This craft is perfect to reinforce the topics taught during this science lesson and it works well as a science center too. Plus, it's a craft too! This 3-D Frog Life Cycle Craftivity includes original art graphics from me, directions, patterns, frog life cycle sequencing cards, a black and white frog life cycle poster, and a color frog life cycle poster. The four frog life cycle sequencing cards are for eggs (frog spawn), tadpole, froglet, and adult frog. You can ask students to add labels if you wish. ESL and ELL note : The life cycle of frogs poster in this packet is also in Spanish and reads reads Ciclo de vida de las ranas (this is not included in the page count) Click {HERE}to find this at my teaching resource store.
Great hands-on lab activity using Skittles to show weathering and erosion in action. My students (6th graders) have always loved this lab activity. I have provided very simple instructions to follow and it is in the 3 Part Lesson format-Opening, Work Period, and Closing. Enjoy! The handouts tell ...
Questions! Oh, the questions! If you've ever sat in a kindergarten or first-grade class, you know that you have a full day of questions. Especially if you introduce a topic they are unfamiliar about. My little learners ask so many great questions during our polar animal unit. This polar science experiment is a great way
This week we have been learning about cold blooded vertebrate groups. When I taught this in sixth grade I noticed that the groups form the word FAR (Fish, Amphibian, Reptile). I had my students make a 3 tab flip book and put the word F on one tab, A on the middle flap, and R on the last flap. They had to decorate their front cover so that they would remember that those animals were the cold blooded animals. To help students remember I tell them that they, "Live FAR FAR away that is why they are cold." This is just a way for them to associate FAR with cold (we certainly have all three animal groups here where we live). I taught a lesson each day for each group and had them write five facts and draw and color three pictures under each flap. I tell students that the A is in the middle because amphibians start their life out like the first flap (fish) and then change to resemble characteristics of the last flap (reptiles - live on land, breath with lungs). The last flap is R for reptile. On the outside of that flap I have them also write the word LAST at the bottom (telling them that is because it is the last flap). When I teach that lesson I tell students that LAST stands for all the reptile groups (Lizards, Alligators, Snakes and Turtles). I graded them and had grades ranging from 70 to 100 (the students in the 70's were messing around in class). The finished foldables will get glued to the right hand side of student notebooks.
Longhouses were houses build by Native Americans. Reaching lengths of up to 100 feet, longhouses were used to shelter large families or even several families. Often associated with the Iroquois, longhouses are rectangular-shaped and generally had doors at both ends.
This work page has 21 multiple choice or true/false questions for students to answer about weathering and erosion. weathering erosion deposition physical and chemical weathering examples of physical and chemical weathering speed of weathering and erosion causes and effects of weathering and erosion ***Teacher Note: If your school has access to the video "All About Weathering and Erosion" from Schlessinger Media, this assignment can be used as video notes or a video quiz. Otherwise, students can answer these questions using your classroom science resources, lesson knowledge, or research materials and databases. Students should be able to answer the questions fairly easily even without access to the video mentioned. This work page can be used whole class, as independent practice, as a partner or table activity, in small group, for research, as homework, or as an assessment. A full answer key is included!
Tips for Primary Teachers.
I have to say I am really glad of my choice for science!! We did plants 1st while our garden was going on, so we had a lot of hands on things. I chose to do animals next. Conner is in the first grade, so we just read the beginning section of each lesson and answered the questions. Some of our activities ranged from art to science experiments. School at this age is about fun! He is a hands on learner, so I find I need to add things in for him to remember things we go over. Lesson 1 The World of Animals Fingerprint animals! Lesson 2 Vertebrates 1st we talked about the spinal cord hat runs between the vertebrates. Next came the spine. Then he put play-doh in between for the discs. Next he bent it back and forth like our backs work. Lesson 3 Mammals For this lesson, we talked about the mammals in our home. Playing tug of war!! Lesson 4 Mammals: Large and small I cannot find my pictures for this lesson, but I had him act out different animals. If you have more than one child, you could easily make this into a game of charades! Lesson 5 Monkeys and Apes Lesson 6 Aquatic Mammals made an ocean diorama. Lesson 7 Marsupials I made a pouch out of a cloth diaper and he used his brother's mickey mouse for his baby! Some pictures from our visit to the Columbus Zoo. Blessings!!
