In my last post, I talked about making wooden DIY parrot toys. But I only made one for Mika and got tired of drilling holes into the wood scraps. I rationalized that Stewie doesn’t really like wooden toys nearly as much (he has some untouched ones in his cage as we speak). But then I...

My flock of one, Pito, enjoying lunch When I adopted Pito, it was a few days before we had an emergency in our home that resulted in a major renovation and our small family moving into an apartment downtown. Since my lease only allows two pets (we have a cat too), we had to hold off adding to our flock. One of the challenges of having a single parrot is preparing nutritious food for him without a ton of waste or over cooking. Most recipes for chop and grain bakes I find online are recipes to feed large flocks of parrots. I just have a little bitty cockatiel that couldn't possibly eat more than 10 grams of food a day. This recipe will make enough birdie pilaf to last a small cockatiel sized parrot about two weeks without taking over your freezer. Flock of One Pilaf ingredients Ingredients: 1/4 cup Quinoa 1/4 cup Millet (for human consumption/cooking) 1 cup Water 1/2 Sweet Potato baked and cubed 2 tbsp fresh Corn pulled from the cob 2 tbsp fresh grated Carrot 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh Broccoli 1 tbsp finely chopped Capsicum/Pepper/Bell Pepper/Chili 1 tbsp fresh Rosemary or other fresh herbs 1 tsp Chia Seeds 1 tsp Flax Seed Fresh veggies The very first thing you should do to prepare for this recipe is to bake a sweet potato. It takes about an hour so it makes sense to get this out of the way first. I am always baking sweet potatoes. My cockatiel is a big fan of orange colored veggies. I'm happy for that because a lot of companion parrots are deficient in beta carotene and vitamin A. Make sure the millet you are going to cook with is not birdseed but millet for human consumption. I'm a big fan of Bob's Red Mill. They have a whole range of parrot friendly grains available at most grocery stores. 1. Add 1/4 cup millet, 1/4 cup quinoa and 1 cup water to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil uncovered. Once mixture reaches a rapid boil, reduce heat to medium low, cover with lid and simmer for approx. 15 minutes or until all the water is absorbed. Remove from heat source. What it should look like when the water is absorbed into the grains 2. Fluff with a fork 3. Mix in fresh veggies and herbs 4. Add cubed baked sweet potato 5. Mix in chia and flax seed 6. Tah Dah! Flock of One Pilaf! All in one small pot! Now you can feed your "flock" a nutritious meal for two weeks! Success! Now, This is what I do to portion this for later and make it easy to store. However you decide to save this is up to you. I fill an ice tray with a lid with the birdie pilaf and whatever is left over I put in a piece of rubbermaid and put inside the refrigerator. I put the ice cube tray in the freezer (be sure to allow mixture to cool to room temp first). I use the pilaf in the rubbermaid immediately, within a few days. I only freeze the cubes overnight then they are removed and put into a ziplock bag and back in the freezer they go until I need one. To reheat, just pop one in the microwave for 15 seconds or you can even let it thaw out for 10 minutes. Maybe your bird would even like it frozen. I've had success with feeding this to Pito. I cooked this about 3 times now and streamlined the recipe to not be so wasteful. I hope you give this recipe a try and your parrot enjoys it.
