Unless researchers solve the looming data storage problem, biomedical science could stagnate
THE FUTURE OF GLOBAL HEALTHCARE Bio Convergence It’s a revolution, a mass convergence of multiple fields Bio convergence We live in a post-genomic era, where data, molecular engineering, and new frameworks redefine possibilities. Researchers, engineers, and biotech firms are moving beyond the “nature-inspired” paradigm. The lines between biology, engineering, nanotech, and IT are becoming increasingly […]

Metagenomi is a California-based startup that employs the power of metagenomics and couples it with machine learning to develop novel genome editing systems. The organization uses metagenomics to find 4 billion years' worth of microbial evolution. The company has the potential to improve upon the already existing gene-editing steps and magnify them for a better reach and outcome. Recently, Metagenomi raised a whopping $75 million in the Series A funding round, which takes the total capital raised to around $101 million. The funds collected will be utilized to expand the team and develop the company's therapeutic pipeline. This gene-editing startup

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is used to sequence both DNA and RNA. Billions of DNA strands get sequenced simultaneously using NGS. Whereas with Sanger Sequencing, only one strand gets sequenced at a time. Learn about the steps involved in NGS, from nucleic acid extraction to DNA alignment and analysis.

Continuing from my last post, the Cyprus Experiment: …However, if you start playing with genes in order to create the perfect society…that becomes another thing alltogether. Imagine this: genes editing can lead to a situation in which you can choose from a catalog the physical characteristics and personality type of your offspring. “Yes, I would … Continue reading "CRISPR-Cas9 Genome Editing: the Rise of the Super Elite, China and Personalized Bio-weapons"
Advances in technology have enabled researchers to sequence the large regions of repetitive DNA that eluded the Human Genome Project.
RNA Interference – Gene Silencing by Double-Stranded RNA Andrew Z. Fire & Craig C. Mello Nobel Prize Award in Medicine 2006 Introduction This year's Nobel Laureates have discovered a fundamental mechanism for controlling the flow of genetic information. Our genome operates by sending instructions for the manufacture of proteins…
Collecting genome data is reliable, fast and cheap. Yet, interpreting that data is unreliable, slow, and expensive -- when it's even possible. Today, genome interpretation is a burgeoning science, but it's not yet a technology. A stricken patient has their genes sequenced and their mutations identified. But then, it can take a highly trained, and highly paid, expert many hours to make a judgment call on a single unfamiliar mutation.

Some of the weakness in biotech is a product of the approaching presidential election. We’re heading into an election year, and for many people in a highly regulated industry, this means uncertainty. Uncertainty hurts high-beta names. Investors could manage the risk posed by potential changes to the U.S. regulatory environment around drug pricing by taking a close look at their portfolios. Just look at where a company’s positioned in Europe and the rest of the world versus the U.S. If 90% of its sales are U.S. based due to higher prices, it’s more exposed. The public markets are vastly undervaluing the three companies that control the foundational patents for the most promising gene-editing technique, called CRISPR-CAS9: Intellia Therapeutics (NTLA), Crispr Therapeutics (CRSP), and Editas Medicine (EDIT). These companies, which are at the cusp of curing disease, are valued at such low valuations in the marketplace. Just $5 billion among the three of them. Intellia and Crispr Therapeutics have stronger patent positions than Editas.
