*Google Slides and Print Option* *Rubric Added!* About this Product This product came as a result of my students’ love of the biography series “Who Was…?” If you have not looked into this series, I recommend that you do! They are a fun, easy read that offers an engaging way for students to learn about historical figures and important people. Although this product is based on this series, this product could be used for any biography book or project. This is a nice way to integrate Reading, Writing, and Social Studies.🛑 Are you a member of the TLL Membership? These materials are already included. If you are not a member, click here to learn more. How I Used this Product In my 3rd Grade classroom, I used multiple copies of the same book or books and paired students in partnerships. In my school, we have a 30 minute Reading Intervention Block. I began this project with students who were not pulled out or working with me in small groups during this time. This was a nice way for students to work independently or in partnerships. It also created an extension for what they could already do as readers. Plus, they had so much fun! I let them work on this project in their partnerships. This held several benefits. Many students who were not pulled out or working in small groups tend to be higher level students OR students who have untapped potential. Allowing them to work on a project like this can extend their learning, as well as find new ways to enjoy reading. While other students had special groups or went to see other teachers, it was nice for these students to have their own project too. The Poster Page is a template that you could use for students to turn in with the essay or you could use this as a planning page and then have students create a larger poster on their own. I assigned it as homework and was pleasantly surprised at what my students turned in. I saw a wonderful increase in engagement by students who had shown little motivation or enthusiasm for reading. You can see the photos in the preview or in the product itself. Please know I updated the pages after the photos were taken with more detail and provided the poster template. Hi bloggy friends! I can't believe it's been over a month since I last posted. When I started this blog, I really had intentions of posting more regularly. But I guess I'm not as on top of things as I'd like to be. Besides being swamped at school (like I'm sure all of you are too), I was super sick with pneumonia for awhile and still have bronchitis. Needless to say, I'm so ready for winter break so that I can get some extra rest and spend lots of time with my boys. Anyways, I was so excited that my summarizing organizer was helpful to many of you! Thanks a bunch for all of the positive comments! Someone asked if I have the same organizer for nonfiction and unfortunately, I do not; however, here is an organizer that I have my kiddos use when reading nonfiction text. From this organizer, my students then write a summary. Main Idea Organizer I have created a graphic organizer to help with summarizing biographies. It also comes from some ideas I learned at a training with Kathy Bumgartner (www.kbumreading.com). Summarizing a Biography Also, this week we wrapped up our literature circles and the kids got to pick three activities from a Tic-Tac-Toe style menu that they'd like to complete. They had so much fun and their products were so creative (I've really got to start taking pictures). Here's a copy of the Tic-Tac-Toe. The activities can be used with any stories! Literature Circle Final Projects Ok, so that's it for now. I have been getting some creative ideas from other blogs out there and wanted to give back a little something! If you can use any of these activities, I'd love to hear your plans for them! 12

NyQuil has been taken, and it is almost time to stretch out on the couch and watch the Rockies play. However, I wanted to show you some of the AMAZING pictures of the bottle buddies my students created this year. I posted previously about the biography presentation and bottle buddies. I also have the directions and rubric FREE on teacherspayteachers.com (I always feel like a used car salesman when typing that!) This was the first year that I added the bottle buddies as part of the project and it was a HUGE success. I also had the students do a wax museum for the school, and I have to say, I felt like a proud momma as I watched every student do a phenominal job of it. I did have to laugh when by the end there were some complaints about how tired they were of repeating the same information over and over. Hmmm. Not even going to go there. :OD Marie Curie, Helen Keller, Rosie the Riveter, and Harriet Tubman Marie Curie has a battery pack so that the radium actually glows! Super creativity! Sitting Bull and Geronimo also came to visit our classroom. We were in the presence of Paul Revere, Ponce De Leon, JFK, Abe Lincoln, and Ben Franklin Once again, I want to say how proud I am of my "Maylians"! You truly made this 5th grade teacher proud. Not to mention, you set the bar high for the next assignment....(insert evil laughter!)
is that an ipod, an iphone, or is this the unveiling of the ipad?!

'4B' was the code our school secretary used to easily identify our class back when I taught 4th grade. 4 = 4th grade. B = Bongers. I later went on to teach Language Arts at a middle school, so this blog documents the learning we did in reading and writing each day, in addition to many posts from when I taught fourth grade. I figured keeping it all in one place was better than having two separate blogs. One more thing: please feel free to PIN anything you see!
