How I Used this Product In my 3rd Grade classroom, I used multiple copies of the same book or books and paired students in partnerships. In my school, we have a 30 minute Reading Intervention Block. I began this project with students who were not pulled out or working with me in small groups during this time. This was a nice way for students to work independently or in partnerships. It also created an extension for what they could already do as readers. Plus, they had so much fun! I let them work on this project in their partnerships. This held several benefits. Many students who were not pulled out or working in small groups tend to be higher level students OR students who have untapped potential. Allowing them to work on a project like this can extend their learning, as well as find new ways to enjoy reading. While other students had special groups or went to see other teachers, it was nice for these students to have their own project too. The Poster Page is a template that you could use for students to turn in with the essay or you could use this as a planning page and then have students create a larger poster on their own. I assigned it as homework and was pleasantly surprised at what my students turned in. I saw a wonderful increase in engagement by students who had shown little motivation or enthusiasm for reading. You can see the photos in the preview or in the product itself. Please know I updated the pages after the photos were taken with more detail and provided the poster template. As I've mentioned before, I try to always be in the middle of several books at once so that I've got a pick to fit every mood that might come up. My "ideal four" genres to always have going on? An adult fiction, a young adult fiction, a nonfiction (often a self-help or religious title),

Happy Monday!! It has been a productive one around here As I write these words, I also realize some of the events of today. I was very excited to be off today and have the morning to myself to complete at least ONE new product. The way I work tends to be 20 things going at the same time. (Anybody with me?) However, I really needed the feeling of accomplishing SOMETHING! As teachers, I think we have high ambitions for our breaks from school. I know I do! So, I woke up early, started the coffee, and got my Netflix going for some background noise while I worked. It never really feels like work when you’re “watching TV.”

Part 4 The students have been working hard reading and researching about their person of choice! They are learning so much and so excited! One little girl ran up to me and said, "Did you know that Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day! I need to put this on the timeline!" It's important to model how to write complete sentences from their recording sheets. If you do not take time to do this students will copy word for word from their recording sheets. This will mean they will either copy it from the book or write an incomplete sentence. This student researched Dr. Seuss. She has some spelling issues but she has been finding some great facts. After she filled out the recording sheets she chose what kind of paper she wanted to use to write her report. I offer the children many different types of paper. Each paper choice has a spot for a heading. These headings get transferred to the Table of Contents! Students love filling out the About the Author page! Students look at a photo or drawing of their person and they draw on the cover with pencil. After they are done they trace the drawing with Sharpie. This helps bring out the details and helps when they color. Click to Enter the Giveaway! Biographies can be inspiring. Here is a curated collection of the best biographies of all time to read for inspiration and fun.
Teaching with Biographies and Ben Franklin With all of the fabulous biographies available today for children, teaching about and with biographies can be such fun for your students. It hasn't always been this way. When I was a little girl (many, many years ago...) I remember biographies being boring, fact-filled chapter books. They were definitely not the books that I chose when I went to the library. The only biographies I remember reading were those assigned to me by my teachers. Today's biographies for children are very different. Biographies for children are now colorful picture books full of interesting information that grab the reader's attention and are enjoyable to read. I recently gathered a variety of biographies for my students on Benjamin Franklin. My school library has several wonderful biographies about Mr. Franklin. We combined learning about the characteristics of biographies with learning more about this U.S. founding father. Some great biographies about Benjamin Franklin include: Ben Franklin His Wit and Wisdom by Alan Schroeder Who Was Ben Franklin? by Dennis Fradin Now and Ben by Gene Barretta Although all of these books are excellent, I chose to begin by using How Ben Franklin Stole the Lightning by Rosalyn Schanzer. Before we read this book, I had the students to do a variation of an ABC brainstorm activity. With ABC brainstorm, students write what they know about a given topic using each letter of the alphabet. Instead of ABC's, we did a BEN brainstorm. Students wrote one fact about Ben Franklin with each of the 3 letters: "B", "E", and "N". (3 facts are much faster to write than 26.) I discovered that many of my students knew very little of Ben Franklin or thought he was one of our presidents. After we discussed our prior knowledge, we then discussed characteristics of biographies. My sweet teacher friend next door has this adorable biography anchor chart that she let me share. After reviewing the characteristics of a biography, we read and discussed How Ben Franklin Stole the Lightning. My students really enjoyed this colorful and interesting biography. Next, students used their Chromebooks to read an online book about Ben Franklin. This book is actually part of a paid website that my school system has purchased called myOn. It was a fun graphic biography that my students enjoyed, but if you do not have access to this website, another great choice is this page from Mr. Nussbaum. The students then used the information they learned from both resources to complete a graphic organizer. This biography graphic organizer can be found in my store in a packet containing four graphic organizers for your students to use as templates as they research and write about a person. Choose the graphic organizer that is perfect for your whole class, assign different graphic organizers for different groups of students, or choose specific organizers to differentiate the needs of your students. Use the graphic organizer alone, or as a writing template for the writing page essay paper. A grading rubric is also included if you choose to use this as an assessment. Click here or the picture below to purchase. Finally, we watched a 90 second video that recapped the information we had learned about Benjamin Franklin. This short video can be found here. If you are looking for a fun lesson to use with biographies, I hope you may want to try these activities out with your students. I know my kiddos had a lot of fun and learned a lot about Benjamin Franklin and biographies. Have a blessed day!
