I donβt know if youβve noticed this as a parent, but kiddos have questions. One of LGβs questions recently made me realize it was time to take Bible study more seriously. βMomma, what is βmy victoryβ?β (She asked this while listening to the song βMy Victoryβ by Crowder.) There it was. The perfect opportunity to explicitly β¦
Today's lesson in Kindergarten was about the Wise and Foolish builders. The kids have been singing "The Wise Man Built His House on The Rock" since they were babies so this story was familiar to most of them. We talked about what a parable is and the reason Jesus told parables. We did this activity as we talked about why we should build our houses (lives) on a solid foundation (Jesus) and not on the sand! They loved this and thankfully it worked like it was supposed to. I did reinforce the house on the rock by taping the popsicle stick to the bottom of the pan before stacking up the rocks! We couldn't have that house falling too! The last time I tried this some of the rocks wouldn't stay put and the house leaned a little! I wanted it to stand firm this time. Before the storm came! The rains came down! The house on the rock stood firm! A very simple craft. Find pictures of houses and have the kids glue one on a rock and the other sideways on some sand! Another wise and foolish builders song! Found this song here I printed off some coloring pages to use as visuals to go along with the song. I put the words on the back of each picture Tune: This Old Man This wise man, he built well he built well up on a rock When the rains came down And the Floods came up This man's house stood firm and strong! Foolish man, he built wrong he built wrong up on the sand When the rains came down And the Floods came up This man's house came tumbling down!

This week, we summarised all the God had created. Since we hadnβt talked about the creation of the first man, Adam, the previous week, we talked about him now. I had planned to take in some play dough and show my kiddos how God formed Adam ever so carefully, but I donβt know how it [β¦]
Jesus tells the story contrasting the wise builder and the foolish at the conclusion of His Sermon on the Mount. He tells His hearers that if they hear His words, and do them they are like the wise man, but if they hear His words and do not do them they are like the foolish man. The lesson here is about obedience - so meaningful and relevant to preschoolers. Building your life on Jesus (which is often the lesson taught with this story) is an abstract concept for little ones, but obedience, and choosing whether to be wise or foolish is right up their alley for both understanding and application! Bible Truth: Jesus teaches me to be wise. Bible Story: The wise and foolish builders. Bible Study: Matthew 7:24-27 teach sensory storytelling For a great visual and sensory experience of this parable round up these items: Legos a clear shallow container sand a brick Velcro a hair dryer a spray bottle filled with water To prepare, build two Lego houses. Add a couple strips of Velcro to the bottom of the wise man's house, and the brick. It works best to build the foolish man's house a bit top and front heavy. I also left the back of the house exposed so that it will be easier to blow down when I tell the story. Fill the clear shallow container with sand. Hold your Bible open, and tell the children that this is an exciting story because it's a story that Jesus told his friends and people that wanted to follow Him. We want to follow Jesus so let's listen to this story! Jesus said that anyone who listens to His words, and obeys, is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. A storm with lots of rain and strong winds came, but the house built on the rock was strong. It stood firm. Invite the children to pat their legs to make the sound of rain. Spray the house with water, and then spray a mist over the children. Turn the blow dryer on to a cool setting, direct the air towards the house, and direct it to the children. (They will LOVE this!!) Then Jesus said that anyone who listens to His words, but does not obey, is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. A storm with lots of rain and strong winds came, and the house on the sand came crashing down. Once again, invite the children to pat their legs to make the sound of rain. Spray the house, and a mist over the children. Turn the blow dryer on to a cool setting, direct the air towards the children., and then towards the house to blow it over. Ask the children, "Do you want to be like the wise man who built his house on the rock, or the foolish man who built his house on the sand? When we listen to our parents and teachers, and obey them by doing what they say, Jesus said we are like the wise man." sing Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock is the traditional children's song illustrating this parable. Before we sing the song I briefly explain that building your life on the Lord means to obey Jesus. play wise and foolish charades Play this game to teach and reinforce the practical application of this lesson. To prepare, use pictures (if they are available to you) of children being wise (i.e. sharing, helping, etc.) and pictures of children being foolish (i.e. fighting, stealing, etc.). If these pictures are not available to you, simply write the words on slips of paper. Put the pictures or words in a container from which the children will draw from. Also print out these happy and sad faces. Cut them out and glue a happy and sad face to either side of a craft stick for each child. Choose pairs of children to come to the front of the classroom and draw out a picture or word from the container. Help the children figure out what the picture is conveying, or what the word says, and help them act it out. Engage the rest of the class to help them guess what the children are doing. (If you are using pictures, you can also show them the picture.) After they determine the action of the children, ask them if the children are being wise or foolish. If they are being wise they should show you the happy side of their craft stick. If the children are being foolish, they should show you the sad side of their craft stick. craft coloring page Here is a coloring page for this lesson to which you may add sand, and rock as suggested in the craft below. rock painting Collect enough smooth rocks for each child in your class. Allow them to paint their rocks however they like. When they dry, write on the rocks with a Sharpie marker, "I am wise when I obey." wise & foolish builders For this craft you will need: this heading construction paper 6 craft sticks per child glue rock pattern contact paper (or gray / brown construction paper) craft sand (or sand / dirt) To prepare, print and cut the heading into strips, and cut the contact paper into approximately 1.5" by 5" rectangles. (I'm using the contact paper because I already have it on hand. If you opt to use construction paper, cut it to the same size, then crumple and flatten it out to give it a more "rock like" texture.) Since there is a lot to glue for this project, you may want to glue the headings to the construction paper ahead of time. In class, help the children glue the contact paper to the bottom left side of their paper, and sand to the bottom right side. Glue four craft sticks, in the shape of a house, on the rock. Then help them break two craft sticks, and glue them randomly over the sand.
I made these pattern block mats using Photoshop. Each mat comes in color and blackline, depending on your preference. The blackline mats offer more of a

I love to teach reading and it really comes as second nature to me. I learned this around 1998-1999 when I was helping a neighborhood kids in the 5th grade. Tony was reading at a 2nd grade reading level and his teacher and school was threatening to retain him. Smart boy but had never been properly taught to read as a small child, unfortunately he is one of those quiet good kids that get left behind by teachers when they have too many students to tend to (this was his specific case). I took him to help him how to read and write better and learned that Tony was VERY proficient in Phonics but not in sight word recognition. So I started with that with him and viola! he was reading away real quick! This led to me going back to school to get a Masters in Reading K-12...it was so much fun! I actually miss being in college learning about the art of teaching reading! ;) This past week I've had a lot of on the road time traveling to see family and I realized that I haven't writtern about that which I love so much! So I will be posting things about teaching reading in hopes that I can help someone out there that is having trouble or just starting out and could benefit from these posts. If you are teaching reading to your little one or have a child who is having trouble reading, then it is vital that they become proficient in sight words. Why? Well because sight words are about 87% of all the words that children read in their trade books. Words like "the" "in", "a", "it", and "is" are all part of this very important list. These words are phonetically irregular words, meaning you cannot use phonics to decode them so they must be learned by sight. Knowing sight words is one of the basic building blocks when learning how to read and one that should not be ignored. What happens if the Reading or Phonics program you selected does not include the teaching of sight words? I suggest that you do it on your own and it is quit simple. Am I saying that you shouldn't teach Phonics? NO! Never! Phonics is important or just as important as teaching sight words. Many programs fail to intergrate both of these in their reading programs, which is unfortunate but important for homeschooling moms to know. For the purpose of this post, I'm going to focus on sight words. There are two lists but most of the words overlap. Dolch Sight Words and Fry Sight Words are the two lists you can work from. In the 1940s, Dr. Edward William Dolch created the list by using 220 phonetically irregular words and 95 common nouns to create his Dolch Sight Word List. He chose words that were most often used in childrenβs reading books during the 1920s and 30s. In the 1990s, Dr. Edward Fry took the Dolch researched list and created 1,000 most frequently used words and he put them in order of frequency. Children should be repeatedly exposed to these words so that they learn them quickly. This bolsters their reading self-esteem, which in turn makes them want to read more. You would be so surprised how your little Joseph or little Mary is going to want to start reading and selecting books at the library! Each list is arranged by levels of difficulty advancing in it and the levels of infrequency, well at least the Fry list is. Dr. Dolch created his lists to be mastered by the third grade while Dr. Fry's list is separated by grade levels and goes up to the fifth or sixth grade. Each list is separated by 100 words so the first 100 words are called pre-premer words and should be learned by kindergarten the next words are learned in increments of 100 but I suggest should only be taught 5-10 at a time until mastered. Once those 10 are mastered you teach another 5-10 but always exposing them to the previous ones either by games or flash cards and with exposing them to easy reader texts. Here are the list of words for your use in PDF format: First Hundred Second Hundred Third Hundred Fourth Hundred Fifth Hundred Depending on your child's ability is when you should start. For example, my six year old son is brilliant in Math but not in reading whereas my five year old daughter is the opposite so she is in kinder and he is in first and this is what we are doing this year: Trimester 1: Words 1-150 Trimester 2: Words 151-300 Trimester 3: Words 301-500 Now this is the plan and yes I do have high expectations for them but its because of how they learn and what they can do. So far so good. There are several ways to teach sight words. Here are some examples: 1. flash cards 2. memory games 3. practice tracing the words 4. use tactile things like playdough mats or any multi-sensory way to create the words 5. create a power point of the words 6. use the words to create sentences (include vocabulary from either your Science or History lessons). 7. teach the shape of the word 8. Sight word games Repetition is important in learning these words by sight but it can be boring so it is vital that you make this as fun of an experience as possible! :) Blessings, Erika

Paint Paddles are NOT just for mixing paint. :) I Decided to make some Bible Facts Review Sticks. These are based off something I saw on Pinterest. (BTW, I love Pinterest!!!) I have by no means exhausted ALL the Bible Facts, List, People, etc. Matter-of-Fact, I need to finish the one I am making for the Kings of Israel, The Prophets of both the Northern and Southern Nations, The Beatitudes, Acts of Worship, Parables, Jesus Attributes, etc. These will be used as an EAA...for the first few weeks....However, I am probably going to be using them as I teach on the topics, too. Letting each one of the Kiddos ADD a piece as we talk about the subject. I am also considering using this method as a WAY of telling the Bible Story....If I do, You will see it here on the website. Enough of my rambling.....This is how I made these. I purchased these LARGER paddles for $0.28 each at Walmart. Then, I printed and laminated pictures from our Bible Flip Facts Charts....making sure to make ONE picture for the HEADER pic that I glued on the TOP of the paddle. I then attached the prickly side of adhesive VELCRO strips to the paddle. I then attached the soft side to the pics. My thoughts being... LITTLE HANDS would be holding the pictures and I did not want them to get stuck by the prickly Velcro. It really did not take much time to make these....Cutting out the little pieces took the longest time....but, I can "watch" more like LISTEN to a movie or the news while cutting out laminated items. :) Days Of Creation Paddle Putting It In Order. This is how we will use the Review Sticks. I will be handing the KIDDOS a Paint Paddle with all the Velcro pieces in a baggie. Then they will have to PUT the pieces on the Paint Paddle in the CORRECT ORDER. (With my help and encouragement, of course.) Completed! These are ready to go for SUNDAY. We will be using them as this weeks EAA!!!!! I love it when I get to give the KIDDOS something "NEW" to do. And, anything that helps them LEARN their Bible Facts!!!!! Hope you are excited about this FUN, EASY and CHEAP way to help our KIDDOS learn their Bible FACTS! Blessings, Ronda
