Bible ABC's: V is for Vegetables Daniel, Shadrach, Meshack and Abed-Nego in Daniel 1:12 These lessons can be used without the alphabet theme. Consider these an update with new ideas and printables! This easy to make and use Flip Book has the color and black & white. The Spinner Wheel's are fun for kids and easy to prep. Add vegetable stickers for more fun. There is not much to find on vegetables, so there I included the picture to color and a picture with mazes . A crossword and word search are included and have the teacher's answer sheets and a vegetables color by number code. The first is a Reader Worksheet. The wording from the scripture is as easy to read as possible with sight words while keeping to the key points with easy to answer questions. The second is a fill-in-the-blank worksheet. Color and black & white are included for both. I designed the Trip Strip to be a cut & glue timeline. This one shown has lines for the students to write about each event. Or, they can write the scriptures. There is another worksheet without the writing space. These can easily be used for mixed age groups. Cut and glue according to directions. Crafts Here are a few craft we used when teaching a lesson on "Jesus Calms the Storm" during VBS. These could be used with several other lessons like Noah, Jesus walks on Water, Paul's Shipwreck, etc! Ocean Bags Snack size ziplocks work great for this craft. Place a small amount of blue toothpaste in the bag, seal it, and let the child spread the toothpaste out by rubbing over the bag. You can use stickers to stick on the outside or even place something small on the inside. Wave Streamers Use blue and white or dark blue and light blue streamers to make this craft. Cut pieces of streamers and either tape or glue them to the end of a jumbo popsicle stick. The kids like to help make a storm by waving the streamers (waves) in the air and then stopping when you get to the part of the lesson where Jesus calms the storm. Ocean in a Bottle This is a fun take home idea. I made a big one with a large bottle to use during my lesson with the 2 year olds. I found small water bottles for the kids to have. For older kids you might could let them help make the oceans but for our younger kids we made them ahead of time and sent them home after the lesson so they could have their own ocean at home to review the lesson with. They are a lot of fun. It is important to make sure you glue the lid on so it WON'T come off. I used hot glue on mine. When rocked (not shaken) from side to side it makes neat waves! This "ocean in a bottle" craft was made using the following recipe...very simple! This recipe works very well!! Fill bottle about 1/2 full of water, add blue (just a few drops) of food coloring, shake to turn water blue, fill the rest of the way with cooking oil. Seal and glue lid! You may also want to add shells, fish, glitter, etc before sealing! For a different ocean in a bottle recipe click here

This past Sunday we learned about the story of the conquering of Jericho. We made the "Rams" horns as our "Take Home" Activity. The horns were made before class (see previous post). During class the children added the chenille stick around the mouth piece and were allowed to color and decorate their horn any way they wanted. We also used these horns during the review game...but, more on that later. The kids LOVED these horns. They were soooo excited about getting to show their parents their "Rams" horn. Our memory verse this week was from the book of Proverbs. We said and sang the memory verse several times during class...and I am sure they will have it memorized by Wednesday. Our Review Game was a BLAST (the kiddos were allowed to blow their horns during this game.) I had the children draw card from a pile...if they picked a "Trumpet Carrying Priest" then they were a horn blower....if they picked the "Ark of the Covenant" then they had to follow behind the horn blowers as we marched around "Jericho." The children had to answer a question from the story in order to pick a card. This "Review Game" board from the Rahab story served as our Wall of Jericho. We marched around it a total of 13 times...(1 time for each of 6 days and then 7 times for day 7.) Then the kids blew their horns and shouted. Because this is a poster board type game board, I was able to let the wall fall flat. Their expressions were priceless...I love getting them excited about Bible stories. On Wednesday the children will be making this project for the Explorer Journal. The horns are Bugles (from the grocery stores chip aisle.) I coated them with a thick coating of modge podge and let them air dry for several days. They have become extremly hard and I believe will hold up well in their Explorer Journal...I love the arm on the one Priest...it has motion by adding a brad...I love activities that have the kids do several things with their hands... I believe it will help them remember the story very well. Blessings, Ronda

Review: We learned last week that Barnabas decided to take Mark and go a different direction to preach about Jesus. Paul took Silas and Timothy to travel to other churches and preach about Jesus. Remember, Timothy was younger, about 15 or 16 and his mother and Grandma taught him the Old Testament. Paul taught him about Jesus. Paul had a vision one night. The man in the vision begged Paul to come to help them in Macedonia, so they left for Macedonia the next day. Click here to download Luke Poster. Then, Luke started traveling with Paul also. Read Acts 16:8 & 10. So, we also learned last week that when Luke is traveling with Paul, the Bible says we and us, but when Luke is not with Paul, Luke says them. Philippi felt banner change for the tent and prison for next week Lesson: Scripture is Acts 16:12-15. Now, Paul has Silas, Timothy & Luke traveling with him. They traveled 10 miles to Philippi. The Roman roads were paved here, and there are still parts of them there now! They had been in Philippi, which is in Macedonia, for some days. On the Sabbath day, they went out of the city gate to the riverside. People gathered together there to pray. The city of Philippi didn't have enough Jewish men to have a synagogue, so the people went to the river to worship. It was mostly women worshipping there. They would pray, study the Old Testament laws from scrolls and talk about what they had read. This would have been a great privilege to have a man there to teach them. After they had sat down, they talked to a woman they had met there. One of the women that was there worshipping was named Lydia. She already believed in God and didn't worship idols. She sold purple fabric. Let's talk a little bit about how she made the purple fabric, and why it was so expensive. I have cut pieces of purple cloth and shells on the front table for the kids to pick up when they come in to class. They do their passports and pick up whatever I have for them so there is not time wasted handing out things. And, if there are choices, like the shells, they can pick before class. And, first come, first picking! Purple cloth was very expensive. The reason it was so costly was that it was difficult to make. The dye for the cloth came from a shellfish. Purple dye had to be gathered drop by drop from the veins of certain shellfish found only in this area of the Mediterranean. The little bit of juice was white while it was in the veins of the fish, but when it was exposed to the sun, the liquid changed into bright purple and red colors. It took thousands of seashells to make a yard or two of purple cloth. It took a lot of work to catch enough shellfish to dye even one garment. It was a statement of status, power, and wealth in Roman times. The beautiful cloth was mainly used by members of the royal families and Roman senators who were required to have a purple band around the edge of their togas, or robes. (This info gathered over years of research, and I do not know exact origins.) Lydia listened to Paul. Lydia and her household were baptized, immediately, and then she begged Paul, Silas, Timothy and Luke to go to her house to stay. This worksheet is a concept chart. As you are reading through Acts 16:11-15 with the students, they can fill in the facts that are stated. This includes the color (w/o logos), black & white and a teacher's answer sheet. Click here to download. When I make these, I use the Accucut diecut machine to cut the (large) shells for the outside. But, I have included the outside, as you can see, and the inside. Once I glued the outside on, I trimmed a little of the inside so it would look nicer, but that is just me. Because, actually, the kids will be cutting and gluing these, so I won't be trimming theirs. Please note, though, that I used the same cream shell for the inside because I couldn't find a plain outline of a shell to use, and you couldn't see anything if I used what is available.
