Today's lesson is about Noah and the ark God told him to build. Noah did it, EXACTLY as God told him to... and it saved him! Today's project is a booklet that the kids will fill in the blanks as we talk about the Bible lesson. My kids have learned about Noah a lot already, so the fill-in-blanks should help them remember the little details from Genesis. I have included the scripture in case you want to have kids use their Bibles and find the answers themselves. But, I like having a Bible lesson straight from the Bible anyway. There's not a better place to get the answers! Lesson found in Genesis 6-9: After a long time, God saw that the people on the earth were evil all the time, God was sorry that He created man. God said that He was going to destroy man and the animals because He was sorry that He made them. Today's Bible verse says: But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah obeyed God. He had three sons named Shem, Ham and Japheth. God told Noah that the people on the earth were so bad and that He is going to destroy them. “Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.” God told Noah exactly how to build it and exactly how big to build it, exactly what to use, exactly how many floors, windows and doors. [Show diagram to further discuss. It was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high, 3 floors, 1 door on the side & 1 window.] Noah didn't pick and choose what he wanted, or what he felt like doing. He did all that God said to do. God said “I am going to bring a flood and destroy everything, except for you, your wife, your sons and their wives. I want you to bring a male and female of every animal and keep them alive on the ark. I want you to take enough food that will be needed to eat for you, your family and the animals.” So Noah did what God commanded him. No questions, no whining, he just did it. God told Noah to go onto the ark. He was to take 7 each male/female of the clean animals, 2 each male/female of the unclean. 7 each of the bird’s male/female. Noah was 600 years old when God flooded the earth. It took 7 days for the animals to go onto the ark. (vs. 4) They went 2 by 2, male & female. God shut the door of the ark. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights and covered everything. Everything that was not in the ark died. The water picked up the ark and it floated. God made a wind pass over the earth to help dry it faster, the waters settled in the earth and it stopped raining. There was water on the earth for 150 days. The ark came to a stop on Mount Ararat. After 40 days, Noah sent out a (1) raven. Then he sent out a (2) dove, but it came back since there wasn’t any place dry for it to rest. After another 7 days passed, he sent out another (3) dove and it brought back an olive leaf. After another 7 days, he sent out the (4) dove and it didn’t return. That meant there was someplace it could make a home. Noah took off the covering from the ark and looked to find the ground was dry. If you add up all the days, they were on the ark for 1 year! God told Noah to leave the ark with his family and all the animals. Noah built an altar and offered sacrifices to God. God was pleased with Noah and put a rainbow in the sky. He said it is His promise to man that He would never destroy the earth with water again. Every time you see the rainbow in the cloud, it will remind Him and the people of His promise. Noah lived 350 more years after the flood. He was 950 years old when he died! This is the table visual my husband made for me several years ago. There is a train car on the top so the kids can understand the scale. Here is the booklet that we used during the lesson. The kids filled in the blanks as we did the lesson. You can print it in color or black & white. Spanish is available in both. Gideon is so much fun for the students! This is a lesson with a lot of visuals, and they are able to up, moving around and loud! Gideon is found in Judges 6. Gideon was one of the judges. He was a judge for 40 years. An Angel of God came to Gideon and said, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!” (Valor means full of courage or brave.) The Israelite people had disobeyed God, so He let them be ruled over by the Midianites for 7 years. Gideon really couldn’t believe that God wanted HIM to fight the Midianites. The Lord told Gideon to take down the altar of Baal and the wooden image that was next to it. (Judges 6:25-27) He was told to build an altar of rock and sacrifice a bull. Gideon took 10 men and tore down the altar of Baal during the night. When the men saw the Baal altar gone the next morning, they asked who had taken it down. Someone said Gideon. They told Gideon’s father (Joash) to go and bring Gideon, but Joash replied, "Let Baal take care of it!" People from different tribes started gathering with Gideon. Gideon asked God that “IF you really want ME to save Israel, I will put a piece of wool on the floor. If You put dew on the wool only and there isn’t any dew on the floor, then I will know you will save Israel by my hand.” The next morning, Gideon could wring water from the wool and there wasn’t any dew on the floor. Gideon asked God again, “Don’t be angry with me, but one more test, will You put the dew on the floor and make the wool dry this time?” And, of course, when Gideon woke up, there was dew on the floor and the wool was dry. (We discussed dew outside and how when we have dew, it is everywhere, and not just certain places.) The next morning when Gideon and the people woke up and gathered together, God told Gideon that there were too many people there to fight the Midianites. God wanted the people to know they won the battle because of Him, not because there were so many people willing to fight. God told Gideon to let the people go that were afraid. So, 22,000 left, but there were still 10,000 people with Gideon. God said, “That is still too many. Take them to the water for a test. Separate the ones that cup their hands and lap the water like a dog from the ones who get on their knees to get a drink.” (Judges 7:5) God told Gideon to take the ones that cupped their hands to drink. There were only 300 men, but God said that He would be with them to beat the Midianites. God instructed Gideon to take his servant and go down into the valley where the Midianites were camped. They had so many people in the camp “like locusts” and so many camels; they were like “sand on the seashore!” Gideon divided the 300 men into three groups. He gave each of them a trumpet, and empty pitcher with a torch inside. Gideon told them to watch him and copy what he does. When I blow the trumpet, then you will blow yours and say, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon.” For the battle, I turned off the lights, since it was midnight. The kids threw down their pitchers, held the torch and blew their trumpets! FUN! (I warned the next-door teacher before class!) Gideon had 100 men with him and when they got to the camp about midnight, they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers. Then the other groups of men did the same thing! They held the torches in the left hand and trumpets in their right hand. The Midianite men woke up and cried out! Some of them killed each other and then they ran! Gideon sent messengers to tell the other tribes to seize the Midianites that are hiding. They found them everywhere! They even captured two princes! After all the fighting, the country was calm for 40 years. (Judges 8:28) This is today's take-home that we used during the lesson. There is a front and back which is just black & white so you can print on color cardstock. I cut them out, and put glue around the outside edges, LEAVING the top open so I could insert the torch. You can print it here. I found this pitcher at Hobby Lobby, the 'horn' at Oriental Trading a LONG time ago and made the torch for this visual. I use a ram's horn that can be purchased at eBay or Amazon. I also bought this fleece at Hobby Lobby ($12.99-30% everyday). Pretty expensive, so I bought 1/2 a yard and cut smaller pieces to let the kids take home. They love to feel this! I handed out sandwich baggies for the fleece and the trumpet to be kept in until they got home. The fleece likes to shed, but really, it's worth it! HA! Had to show you this! My dog must have thought I had a friend for her, since it looks like poodle hair! She sniffed it all over and had to nudge under it! ☺ Sorry, back to the lesson! For Cain and Abel's project, I created a file folder game (FFG). because I wanted to reinforce doing what is right, and what God wants, not what we want, I created the game cards for the player to move forward if it is the right thing to do or move backward if it is the wrong choice. Review: Last week we talked about Adam and Eve. They were in the Garden of Eden. They were allowed to eat the fruit from every tree except for the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A serpent came along and said, “You know that you won’t really die if you eat that fruit, but you will be just like God, knowing good and evil.” What kind of fruit was it? We don’t know, the Bible doesn’t tell us. Eve thought it looked good and she wanted to be wise, so she ate it and gave it to Adam, and he ate from it. They saw that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. God came looking for them and after a discussion, God told them their punishment. The serpent was also punished. God made them tunics from skin and made them leave the garden. He put cherubim in the east of the garden and a flaming sword to guard the tree of life. Lesson I found in Genesis 4:1-5:5: Adam and Eve had a son and they named him Cain. Then they had a second son and named him Abel. God told Adam and Eve to build an altar from rocks and stones. They cut up wood and put it on top of the altar and then God wanted them to kill a male lamb and use it as a sacrifice. Adam and Eve taught their children about sin. Cain was a farmer and Abel was a shepherd. After a time, when they were giving their offerings to God, Cain brought his fruit that he grew in his garden and Abel brought the firstborn and the best of his flock of sheep. God liked and respected Abel’s offering. But He did not like Cain’s offering. You can print the table Cain/Abel display tags here. The Bible tells us that by faith Abel brought his best and gave his offering to God with the right attitude that God expected. (See article links below) Cain didn't show faith in his sacrifice. Cain was angry that God didn’t accept his offering and was jealous that God accepted Abel’s offering. Cain talked to Abel and after a time, when they were in the field, Cain killed his brother Abel. We are not told how Cain killed his brother, just that he did. God asked Cain “Where is your brother?” And Cain said, “I don’t know, am I my brother’s keeper?” God said “What have you done? His blood cries out from the ground and now you are cursed. When you farm the land, it will not give you food. You will be a fugitive and a vagabond (drifter or hobo) on the earth.” But Cain cried “That is more than I can bear! If I travel around someone will know who I am and kill me.” Now think about this, he doesn’t want to be killed, and he just killed his brother? God said that if someone killed Cain, God would take vengeance 7 times on that person.” God put a mark on Cain so no one would kill him. Cain left and went to Nod. He married and they had a son named Enoch. They built a city and called it Enoch, after their son. Adam and Eve had another son and they named him Seth. Seth had children and from him came Noah, Abraham, David and Jesus. Adam was 130 when they had Seth. Adam lived 930 years and had more sons and daughters! In an effort to keep to the scripture, I researched about Cain vs. Abel's offerings. Here are a couple of good places for information: Christian Courier (article by Jared Jackson) LaVista Church of Christ Jamestown Church of Christ (article by Frank Walton) I made this file folder game (FFG) to use with this lesson, and then I let the kid have them to take home. What I want to have the kids think about is obeying God, their parents and doing the right thing. Cain didn't. And, then he lied about it. And, one sin usually leads to another, to another, etc. I couldn't decide to title this project Love God & Family or Obey God and Family! But, if you love God and your parents, you will try to obey them. I made the title so it would work with any Bible lesson. This could be used for a lot of different type classes or home uses. Here is the inside, with the game board on the inside right. There are player markers, which I left ends on mine to fold under and help them stand, but that's an option. My daughter suggested rock, paper, scissors to see who goes first, then the first player will take a card, move the spaces it says to, and the next player goes, and so on. The cards are all based on if you do the right thing, you move forward. If you do the wrong thing, you move backward. There are extra blank cards for you to add more appropriate things for you. If there is time, the cards are good to use as thought questions. You can print the FFG here. Click here to print. All the Genesis Worksheets can be printed here.
