{FREE} Printable Monday Memory Verse: Ephesians 2:8-9
VERSES: Zephaniah 1:1-3:20 MEMORY VERSE: Zephaniah 1:7 "Hold thy peace in the presence of the LORD GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Jude. Write "Jude" on small slips of paper and hand out at the end of class. PRAYER: May we always love the LORD and show are love to Him by doing His commandments. SPECIAL SONG: The Books Of The Old Testament and The Books Of The New Testament (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class on this blog. Click on orange circles for tune.) VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) written on the whiteboard or chalkboard, explaining that the people did not want to serve God, but they wanted to worship the sun, moon, and stars, some wanted to worship God AND Idols, and some wanted to only do what they wanted to do. LESSON POINTS: Zephaniah, too, was a minor prophet, writing only 3 chapters to make his book. While we do not know a lot about Zephaniah, we do know that he was related to good King Hezekiah. He was King Hezekiah's great-great-grandson. Zephaniah was preaching at the same time as Jeremiah in the days of Josiah, a few years before Nineveh fell. Zephaniah means "Jehovah hides." God spoke to Zephaniah many things concerning Judah, telling them the many terrible things that would happen if they continued to worship false gods. We have heard this before, haven't we? The people did not listen to God's prophets and they suffered the consequences of being disobedient. God was a jealous God and He wanted His people to serve Him only, but they continued to look to their surrounding neighboring nations and copied them. The other nations served idols; Judah served idols. Judah made idols with their own hands and then worshiped their own stone or wood carvings. Zephaniah said that God was going to stretch out His hand upon Judah because they did not listen to the words He gave to Zephaniah. The LORD God is not a God that is made with man's hands; God is a living God, all-powerful, all-knowing, and every-present. God is the one who made everything, even man. Because Judah was worshiping the sun, moon, and stars, and the fact that some of the Jews worshiped both God AND an idol named Malchan, and the fact that some of the people had turned their backs away from the LORD and did what they wanted to do, it meant that God was going to utterly and completely destroy the land. God would allow the people to go into Babylonian Captivity. Zephaniah said there would still be a remnant or a few people who would worship God with their whole hearts and God would listen to them and take care of them. God would save the remnant and would be with them. The remnant was the good people who served God. "Older Student" Tips: There are a few times the phrase "the day of the LORD" is written in this book. There are two meanings to this phrase. It sometimes refers to the Day the LORD will judge his people in the last day, but sometimes it only refers to a day that the nations will be judged and a consequence given. ACTIVITY: Zephaniah Materials needed: 9" x 12" blue construction paper, scraps of orange, yellow, white, and red paper, glue, scissors, markers, crayons. Hand out blue paper. Write "ZEPHANIAH said that God was going to stretch out His hand upon Judah for making idols." and "Zephaniah 1:4-7" at the top of the paper. Divide the the bottom of the paper into thirds (see picture above). Write "The host of heaven" at the top of the first box. Write "Some people worshiped..." at the top of the second box. Write "Some would turn away from God and..." at the top of the third box. From scraps, draw and cut out sun, moon, and stars. Glue sun, moon, and stars in first box. From white scrap, cut out rectangle and write GOD. From red scrap, cut out rectangle and write IDOLS. Glue "God" and "IDOLS" rectangles in second box. Write "and" between white and red rectangles. (see picture) From yellow scrap, cut out yellow rectangle. Write "Do what they wanted to do." on yellow paper. Glue yellow rectangle in third box.

VERSES: Obadiah 1:1-21 MEMORY VERSE: Obadiah 1:3 "The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: 1 Peter. Write "1 Peter" on small slips of paper and hand out to students at the end of class. PRAYER: May we all be humble and help others as we see the need. SPECIAL SONG: Be Patient And Kind (see April - Lesson - Joseph Meets His Brothers Who Hated Him on this blog) VISUAL AID: White board or Chalkboard Drawing of Activity below LESSON POINTS: Like Hosea, Joel, and Amos, Obadiah was also a minor prophet because the book that Obadiah wrote only has one chapter! Obadiah is the shortest book in all of the Old Testament! Other prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel wrote more, so they are considered major prophets. We don't know a lot about Obadiah. There is not a lot of information on his personal life just like Joel. Obadiah wrote his book about the judgment of Edom. Edom was a nation that was made up of Esau's descendants. Do we remember who Esau was? That's right! He was Jacob's twin brother who gave up his birthright and was tricked out of his blessing by Jacob (see April - Lesson - Jacob and Esau and April - Lesson - Jacob And The Blessing on this blog). As Esau's family grew and grew and grew, it became the nation of Edom. When Obadiah preached to Edom, it was not good news. Edom had a big problem as far as God was concerned, and that was with Edom's PRIDE. Edom had too much pride concerning the place where they lived among the high clefts of the rocks. They had too much pride in the the power they believed they had. They believed they did not need God; they could do everything themselves. They had too much pride in their wealth. They had too much pride in their allies. (Allies means friendly neighbors.) They had too much pride in their wisdom. Because of Edom's sin of pride and the sin of being violent with his brother, Israel, Edom did not come back out of Assyrian captivity. "Older Student" Tips: All nations can fall. Read Proverbs 14:34. Discuss. ACTIVITY: Edom Had A BIG Problem! Materials needed: 9" x 12" green construction paper, crayons, markers, scissors. Hand out green paper. Fold paper in half, and then in half again, width-wise. Open paper flat. Fold the right edge, three inches in toward the middle. Unfold paper. Fold the left edge, two inches in toward the middle. Draw lines on fold lines. TOP PANEL: Write, "EDOM Had A BIG Problem!" and "Obadiah 1:3-8." SECOND PANEL: Write "v.3" in first square; write "Their place" in the middle square, and "PRIDE!" in third square. (see picture below) THIRD PANEL: Write "v.4" in first square; write "Their power" in the middle square, and "PRIDE!" in third square. FOURTH PANEL: Write "v.6" in first square; write "Their wealth" in the middle square, and "PRIDE!" in third square. FIFTH PANEL: Write "v.7" in first square; write "Their allies" in the middle square, and "PRIDE!" in third square. SIXTH PANEL: Write "v.8" in first square; write "Their wisdom" in the middle square, and "PRIDE!" in third square. Cut on the right lines and fold back. The intent of this activity is to show that in every aspect of the Edomites' lives, PRIDE was the sin...and their BIG problem.

VERSES: 1 Samuel 25:2-44 MEMORY VERSE: 1 Samuel 25:3 "...Abigail ... was a woman of good understanding..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review all 66 books of the Bible. PRAYER: May we always strive to keep peace in the family, at school, and everywhere. SPECIAL SONG: The Family In God's Plan (see April - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #4 on this blog) VISUAL AID: TV Box (see February - Visual Aid #1 on this blog). LESSON POINTS: We need to be, oh, so careful when we are choosing a mate to be married to all of our lives. In the Old Testament times, they didn't always have a choice when it came to marriage. Occasionally, men and women married because they loved each other, but more times than not, the man and woman married, then they grew to love each other. We need to always remember that God intended for one man to marry one woman and they were to stay married all of their lives. That's what He wants for you and for me. There was a man and his name was Nabal which really was not a very good name because it meant folly or foolish one. We can see in this Bible story that this man was truly a foolish man. Nabal was wicked and harsh and did evil things. The best thing about Nabal was his wife. The Bible says that his wife's name was Abigail and she had good understanding. She was smart and she was beautiful. Yes, Abigail was the best thing about Nabal as we shall see. Nabal was a very rich man. He had many thousands of sheep and goats. In fact, the story begins as Nabal was shearing his sheep. David was in the same area where Nabal lived and he had heard that Nabal had been shearing his sheep. We need to remember that in Old Testament times, they did not have any fast food or McDonald's or Kentucky Fried Chicken or any hamburger places. The food that people ate was food that they grew or raised themselves. David and his men were out in the wilderness, trying to stay away from King Saul, when David sent ten of his good men to talk to Nabal. David told the men what to say and they did as they were told. The men greeted Nabal in David's name and then said many nice things to Nabal like how David wished Nabal would live a long time and how he wished for them a peaceful life--things like that. David's men also explained that all the time that David and his men had been in the same wilderness that Nabals' shepherds had been watching over Nabal's sheep that David and his men had given them no trouble. They had not stolen anything or hurt anyone. What David wanted was food from Nabal and asked nicely and said he would take anything that Nabal wanted to give him. It was not a nice meeting. Nabal got angry and rude and spoke unkindly. He said, "Who is this David? He may be one that has broken away from his master! Shall I give him my bread and my water and my meat that I had prepared for my shearers and give it to someone that I do not know?" So, when David's men turned around and went back to David with the news about what Nabal said, David got a little angry, too. It was the custom back then to help out a neighbor and if anyone asked something of you, you gave it to him. Jesus says that we should be that way today. David told all of his 600 men to put their sword on. David said that Nabal has returned David's good deeds with Nabal's wicked deeds.David was going to fight Nabal and nothing of his was going to be left standing, even the people would be killed. Meanwhile, one of Nabal's servants went and told Abigail all that had happened and all about Nabal's answer to David. Who was Abigail? That's right! Nabal's wife! The servant said that David's men had been good to them and had not hurt anyone or take anything from them and they had even talked together in the fields. Abigail was very smart! She hurried and gathered up 200 loaves of bread, five sheep that were ready to cook, things to drink ,corn, raisins, figs, and put the food on donkeys. Then, Abigail took off, with her servants going before her. She did not tell her husband, Nabal, and met David and his men on her own. As soon as she got close to David, she hurried, got off her donkey, and bowed her face to the ground before David, falling at his feet. Abigail said to David, "Please let me speak to you and do not even think about this wicked man, Nabal. His name means folly and that is what he is--a foolish man. I did not see any of your young men or talk to them, but please accept this blessing that I have brought with me. Please forgive and do not be offended." She went on to say many nice things about David and, in the end, David accepted her gift. David told her of his plan of killing everyone in Nabal's house, but she had acted wisely and had saved their lives that day. He told her to go home in peace. Abigail went home to find that Nabal was throwing a big party just like he was a king! But Abigail said nothing to Nabal that evening. The next morning when all the wine was out of Nabal, Abigail told him of just how close he came to being killed the day before. The Bible says that when Nabal heard what Abigail was saying, that his heart died within him and he became as stone. Nabal died ten days later. When David heard that Nabal had died, he sent messengers to Abigail, asking her to become David's wife. Abigail said yes. "Older Student" Tips: So, even though David was a very good man, and many things that the LORD told him, he did have more than one wife. The Bible says that in Acts 17:30, "And the times of this ignorance, God winked at, but now commanded all men everywhere to repent." ACTIVITY: What Abigail Brought To David As A Gift Materials needed: smallest brown lunch sack, a plastic baggie, 5" x 7" tan construction paper,9" x 12" white construction paper, 5" x 7" gray construction paper, scraps of yellow, black, and brown paper, marker, scissors. Write "grape juice" on bottle. Hand out white paper. Draw five sheep. Write "sheep" and an "x" for the sheep's eye. Cut sheep out. Hand out small plastic bag or baggie. Hand out yellow scraps. Cut many small yellow circles. This is the parched corn. Place corn in plastic bag. Hand out black paper. Cut many smaller circles. These are raisins. Place raisins in plastic bag. Hand out brown scraps. Cut 2" circles. These are figs. Write "fig" on brown paper. Place figs in plastic bag. Hand out small paper bag. VERSES: Joshua 9:1-27 MEMORY VERSE: Joshua 9:27 "And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: 2 Timothy. Write "2 Timothy" on small slips of paper and hand out at the end of class. PRAYER: Pray that we may always be serious about the promises we make and keep our promises. A promise is a promise. SPECIAL SONG: Be Careful Little Eyes (see March - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #3 on this blog) VISUAL AID: Map, showing the Conquest of Canaan, Jordan area; Examples of the Activity below LESSON POINTS: After the battle of Jericho and the battle of Ai, all the nations around where the children of Israel were camping had heard about what had been happening and how God had helped His people. Their kings began to take notice. All of the kings on the west side of the Jordan River organized and all of their people fought against Joshua and the children of Israel. Some of the people were Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. There was another group of people who were from Gibeon and had heard about the great battles that Joshua and the Israelites had been winning in the land of Canaan .They were tricky people and they played a trick on the men of Israel. They pretended to be ambassadors or messengers from a faraway country and came in a disguise. They put some old sacks on their donkeys, they had old bottles, they patched their clothing, and all of their bread was old and moldy. They pretended to be from a faraway country, coming to make friends with the children of Israel when they heard all that had happened in Egypt to the Israelites, especially hearing how they had won the battles they had been fighting. They wanted to be on the good side of Israel, so Israel wouldn't fight and kill them. They wanted to stay alive. They met with Joshua and, when Joshua asked them who they were and where they came from, they lied to Joshua because they really were NOT from a faraway land, they had only traveled a few days from the land of the Hivites which was close by. Joshua believed the men and promised not to hurt them, and made peace with them. Three days after they had made peace with the Gibeonites, the Israelites found out that the Gibeonites were their neighbors instead of faraway travelers. The children of Israel traveled for three days until they came to the Gibeonites' own cities, but still, the children of Israel kept their promise that the leaders of the congregation had made to their tricky neighbors. The Israelite leaders told the Gibeonites that they would let them live because they had made a promise, but Joshua called the men to come to talk to him. Joshua said that they were all deceivers and, while their lives would be spared, none of them would ever be free men again. They would always be the Israelites' servants.Their main jobs in life would be to chop wood and draw water for God's people. The Gibeonites answered Joshua by saying that because they knew that the LORD God had given all of their land to the Israelites, they were afraid for their lives and that was why they lied. They told Joshua to do with them what he wished and what he saw as good. So Joshua saved their lives, but they were always servants to chop wood and draw water for the children of Israel, and for the altar of the LORD for many, many years. "Older Student" Tips: One lesson that we can learn from this story is that, even if someone lies to us, and we make a promise based on someone else's lie, we still must keep our promise like Joshua did to the Gibeonites. God keeps His promises. We must keep our promises. ACTIVITY: The Tricky Gibeonites' Punishment :Choppers of Wood And Drawers Of Water Materials needed: a small paper or Styrofoam cup, two 3" x 12" dark brown construction paper, a piece of light brown construction paper that is the width of the cup and the length plus one inch, a scrap of blue tissue paper, cellophane paper, or any lightweight blue paper, one scrap of any color 3" x 3" piece of paper, approximately 12" of twine or yarn, tape, scissors, crayons. NOTE: The Bible teacher will need something sharp to make holes in cup, i.e, sharp scissors, ice pick, pointy knife. Keep your eye on the sharp items in your class! Pass out the two dark brown pieces of paper to each student. Roll up one dark brown paper like a log. Tape to secure roll of paper. Repeat with other dark brown piece of paper. Cut each roll in half. These are the logs. Tie twine around 'logs.' Set aside. Pass out light brown paper to each student. Draw black or brown lines on light brown paper to resemble wood. Pass out a cup to each student. Tape light brown paper around the top edge of the cup. This is the bucket of water. NOTE: This step is for the Bible teacher or helper: Make a hole on each side of bucket of water. Thread twine in one hole from the outside to the inside. Tie the end of the twine in a knot. Pull gently. Thread twine in other hole from the outside to the inside. Tie the end of the twine in a knot. Pull gently. Scrunch up blue paper and place inside of cup. This is the water. Write "The Tricky Gibeonites' Punishment" and "Joshua 9:27" on the 'any color scrap of paper.' Tape scrap of paper to bucket. As the students leave the classroom, place 'logs' inside or across the top of the 'bucket' for easy departure.
