VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) LESSON POINTS: Amos, too, was a minor prophet like Hosea and Joel. Remember a minor prophet was not a less important prophet, he just wrote less. Where major prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel wrote many, many chapters in their books, Amos only wrote nine. Amos lived during the same time as Isaiah. Amos was a prophet of God, but he was also a herdsman and a farmer, too. He farmed figs. In Amos' book,the LORD gave judgments against cities and nations like Damascus, Gaza, Tyrus, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Judah, and Israel. He listed many wicked things that the people did and told them what the consequences of their sin would be. Sin always has consequences. Amos also preached to the people. There are three sermons that are written down in his book where he told Israel to turn back to God and stop serving idols. He told them to stop treating the poor people badly, to stop doing the things that pleased only themselves, and to return to the LORD. Amos said that God had stopped the rains which resulted in famines because He wanted the people to repent, but the people would not. Finally, Amos told Israel to prepare to meet their God because captivity was around the corner, but the people had forgotten God for too long and did not care. God said to seek Him and they would live, but they did not heed Amos' warnings. God told the people that a famine was coming, but it would not be a famine of food. There would be a drought coming, but it would not be a drought of water. The famine would be a famine of God's Word. The drought would be a drought of God's Word. There would be a time when God would not speak to the people. Israel would thirst after God's Word like they would thirst after water. They would wander from sea to sea, from north to east, and run to and fro, but they would not find the Word of God. It would be too late for them. Still, the people did not listen to Amos. Amos also said that God would not completely destroy Israel. There would always be a remnant of God's people who loved and served Him with their whole heart. For that remnant, there would be good things to come. "Older Student" Tips: There are many "Messianic" prophecies in the Old Testament and Amos has a few of these prophecies concerning Christ written in his book. Christ would be coming and good things would come. Discuss "Sin always has consequences." ACTIVITY: Amos Materials needed: 12" x 18" red construction paper, 9" x 12" light blue construction paper, 3" x 6" yellow construction paper, markers, crayons, scissors, glue. Hand out light blue paper. Cut blue paper into thirds. PANEL 1: Draw green stalks and yellow corn. Write "Not a famine of food." PANEL 2: Draw a blue river of water. Write "Not a drought of water." PANEL 3: Write "But a famine for..." at the top of the third blue panel. Hand out red paper. Glue all three panels in the order above (see picture), leaving room at the top. At the top of the red paper, write "AMOS" in large letters. Under AMOS, write "There will be". Under PANEL #1, write "And..." Under PANEL #3 t the bottom of the red paper, write "And, still the people did not listen." Hand out yellow paper. Cut yellow paper in half. One each half of yellow paper, fold back one small edge. Place glue ON ONE EDGE ONLY. With halves of yellow paper meeting in the middle, press on outer edges of glued edges, so the yellow papers will open. Open yellow papers. Write "God's Words" and "Amos 8:11" in the middle of the blue panel. Close yellow paper 'doors.' Read what the students have written on their papers together out loud. If time allows, decorate.

Today's lesson in Kindergarten was about the Wise and Foolish builders. The kids have been singing "The Wise Man Built His House on The Rock" since they were babies so this story was familiar to most of them. We talked about what a parable is and the reason Jesus told parables. We did this activity as we talked about why we should build our houses (lives) on a solid foundation (Jesus) and not on the sand! They loved this and thankfully it worked like it was supposed to. I did reinforce the house on the rock by taping the popsicle stick to the bottom of the pan before stacking up the rocks! We couldn't have that house falling too! The last time I tried this some of the rocks wouldn't stay put and the house leaned a little! I wanted it to stand firm this time. Before the storm came! The rains came down! The house on the rock stood firm! A very simple craft. Find pictures of houses and have the kids glue one on a rock and the other sideways on some sand! Another wise and foolish builders song! Found this song here I printed off some coloring pages to use as visuals to go along with the song. I put the words on the back of each picture Tune: This Old Man This wise man, he built well he built well up on a rock When the rains came down And the Floods came up This man's house stood firm and strong! Joel, like Hosea, was one of the minor prophets, which meant that he only wrote a little bit compared to other prophets, writing only three chapters in his book. We do not know much about Joel as a person, only what he wrote. His name means "Jehovah Is God." Sometimes Joel is called the "Prophet of Pentecost" because some his prophecies (Joel 2:28-32) were fulfilled in the book of Acts in the New Testament on the day of Pentecost. (Acts 2:16-47). He pleaded with the people to repent from their wickedness and return to God, like all of the prophets did before him and after him. What made Joel a little different than some of the other prophets is that, during, his warnings and pleadings with the people, there was a great pestilence. A 'pestilence' is like a plague. Remember our lessons on the Plagues of Egypt (see the lessons in April and May on the Plagues 1-10 on this blog)? A pestilence was a tremendous amount of insects that would infect the land and do much damage to the crops, so there would be a famine or no food to eat. Here, in Joel's time, the beginning of the pestilence that ravaged the land were thousands and thousands of locusts. They ate and ate and eventually they went away. Then when the locusts had eaten all they could, there was still a little bit of stalks on the plants; not much, but there was a little bit left. Next, the palmerworms , which was a type of caterpillar, came after the locusts and ate all they could, but there was little bit left. After the palmerworms, the cankerworms, which were certain types of moths and their larvae, came and ate a little bit more. And, finally, the caterpillars came and ate what the cankerworms left. Then...there was no food at all for the people. There were no grapes, no figs, no corn, no oil, no wheat, no barley, no pomegranates, no fruit of the palm trees, no apples, no seeds, no food at all for the animals or the people. The people suffered. Joel said that the reason for their suffering and the pestilence was because God wanted the people to be sorry for the wrongs that they had been doing, and to weep, fast, mourn, and tear their hearts, not their clothes, and to turn to Him again. Joel said that God was good, gracious and kind, that He was slow to get angry and was merciful to those who returned to Him. Joel pleaded with the people to do good, but they would not listen. God was ready to give the people all the things back if they would only return to Him, but they would not repent or be sorry for their wicked deeds, "Older Student" Tips: The book of Joel is written in two main parts. The first part is Joel speaking (Joel 1:1-2:17) and the second part is God speaking (Joel 2:18-3:21). ACTIVITY: What Happened In The Book Of JOEL Materials needed: 9" x 12" light blue construction paper, five pieces of white bond paper, crayons, marker, stapler, staples, scissors. Because there is a lot of writing with pictures, it might a good idea for the Bible teacher to cut both the blue and the white papers in half, lengthwise. Or, the books could even be stapled together in advance. See what is best for your size of class. Hand out two pieces of 4.5" light blue paper. Hand out ten pieces of 4.25" x 11" white paper. Place the ten white papers inside the two blue papers. Line papers up on one side. Staple on the left side of the papers. NUMBER THE WHITE PAGES ONLY ON THE RIGHT SIDE. FRONT COVER: Write "What Happened In The Book Of JOEL.'. INSIDE BLUE COVER: Draw Joel preaching. Write the word REPENT in a speech bubble. PAGE 1: Write "Joel was a prophet of God." PAGE 2: Write "Because the people turned away from God, bad things happened." Write the word, "away" in red. BACK OF PAGE 2: Blank. The Tower of Babel is a short lesson, so I created a cut & glue worksheet that can be used to discuss the things that we should build our life on that God wants. To go with the building theme, I have the cutest toolbox and tools for you! It can be used for any lesson and the kids are going to LOVE it! The people in the lesson wanted to build the tower as a monument to themselves, but God wants expects us to live for Him. Also, at the beginning of the lesson, I had cards printed with Hello in different languages, and we all talked at the same time. That's not a new idea, but one I have done every time I teach this lesson! Review: Last week we studied Noah. The people on earth were so sinful, that God decided to destroy the earth. He wanted to save Noah because of his faithfulness, so God told Noah to build an ark, so Noah did. No complaining, or whining, he just did it! It took him and his three sons 120 years to build it. When it was finished, the animals went into the ark, Noah and his wife, their three sons: Shem, Ham, Japheth and their wives went in. God closed the door and it rained. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights and there was water on the earth for 150 days. When it was dry, they came out, and Noah made an altar and offered sacrifices to God. God put a rainbow in the sky and said it was a reminder of His promise that He would never destroy the earth by water again. FYI: 1.) Babel is like the Hebrew word for confusion & 2.) there are 2800 known different languages in the world now. Lesson is found in Genesis 11:1-9: Today we are going to learn about what happened after the flood. God didn’t like the sinfulness of the people in the world, do you think they changed? Well, over time, each of Noah’s sons had children, and so on. That is in chapter 10 of Genesis. Noah is still alive, and chapter 11 tells us that the whole earth had one language and over time, they moved from the east and lived in a valley in the land of Shinar. (Shine’ ar) God had told the people to multiply and spread out over all the land. But they just went one direction and lived in one area. The people talked to each other and decided to make bricks and bake them carefully. They said “Let’s build a city with a tower that will reach the heavens. We will make a name for ourselves!” They wanted everyone to know how great they were! But when God came to see the city and their tower, He didn’t like what they were doing. They had one language, and they were not using it to praise God, they wanted men to praise them for their city! God decided to ‘confuse their language’, that means that now there are all different languages, and nobody could understand what the next person was saying! Think about how confusing that would be. “Hey, hand me that brick.” Blah, blah, what are you saying? It made it impossible for them to finish the project, just like God intended. They stopped building the city and they spread out all over the earth. So, the place was called Babel, because God confused the language and the people moved to other parts of the earth. Something to think about, we discussed in class that these people didn't do what God wanted, they were not building the tower to please God, they wanted the glory and praise of men. God didn't like it. We talked more about Noah from last week, and Noah built the boat just as God told him to. Maybe, Noah wanted to use different wood, or thought there should be more than one window, but he did it exactly as God told him to, and it saved his family. God told us exactly what He wants for worship. We are here to worship Him, not be entertained. God has given the instructions to follow for worship... How do you think God feels when we don't worship Him like we are instructed? I used language cards and handed them out to everyone. I said 'Hello!' and asked them to read their cards. Then, I had everyone just mumble at the same time to see how confusing it all was. This was so fun! These have been updated. Each word or phrase has the English word at the top. The translation language is on the left side with the translated word(s) in the box at the bottom. They are all black and white. These are easy to use and print. There is a blank page to add your own words or to let the student write their own (if you have wi-fi). You can also type in your own words at Google Translate (if you have wi-fi) and listen to the languages. If you have anyone that speaks a different language, ask them to come in and talk to the students. It doesn't even matter what they say because they cannot understand it anyway! Our assistant speaks Spanish, so we just talked. She kept saying things, and I said I don't understand and there was a lot of hand waving. That was a lot of fun and put it in perspective for them. Click here to download the language cards. This is the project I made for this lesson. I wanted something about building but building to please God. I just added a general title on this so it could be used for other lessons also. You can print the teacher's copy which looks like the photo, all finished. For the students, all the blocks are on the second page for them to cut out and glue to the title page. This is intended to be used as a conversation starter on what God wants from us, with a couple of blank spots for them to fill in. Prayer & worship would be good to fill in the blanks but see what is discussed and add your choices. Student: Color B/W This is how the first cuts for the toolbox should look. You cut off the extra around the two end handles, BUT you DO NOT cut off the sides! When it is folded, they will be stapled and/or taped together to make the box for the 'tools' that will fit inside. I printed mine on heavy cardstock. After you cut the two top edges off, cut out the rectangles for the two handles. Fold the sides and snip the lines, tow on each side. When you pull the sides up, it will form the toolbox. I stapled the sides together, then used Scotch tape to cover the staples so the kids don't get hurt. The toolbox is black & white, to be printed on your choice of cardstock. Hi Godly Play Teachers! Welcome to Knowing Jesus in a New Way 6: Known in Waiting, our lesson for May 20. This week we get to share with the children the story of Jesus' ascension as told in Luke 24:50-53 and chapter 1 of Acts. What a wonderful opportunity to again talk about the disciples' experience with having Jesus right beside them, and then having to learn to live with him in a completely different way. The children have not witnessed this event of course, but most know what it feels like to be left or abandoned-even temporarily-by someone they love- or to feel afraid of what that might be like. For modern Christians whom have never had the joy of having Jesus physically with us, it takes some thinking to imagine what that must have been like, and then to have it taken away. In addition to discussing the story itself, this Sunday is a good time to talk about the idea that feelings are not always the truth of what is really happening. When bad things happen we may feel abandoned by God, but that is not the truth. God never abandons. So what do we do when we have these feelings and fears? What did the disciples do? They did what Jesus told them to do.They waited and prayed and obeyed Jesus' commands until they would be with Jesus again in heaven. As in the sermon last Sunday, they did the ordinary things of living as they waited on God. They chose a replacement for Judas. They went on with life, holding onto each other and to prayer. I really hope that if you're in a room where the children have access to Godly Play materials, that after the story is shared, you'll try letting the children select something to bring to the circle that helps tell the story. Those connections can be so meaningful. Here are the wondering questions for Sunday. 1. I wonder what is your favorite part of today's story. 2. I wonder what you think it looked like when Jesus "withdrew" into a cloud and they couldn't see him anymore. 3. I wonder if you've ever been left behind. I wonder how that feels. 4. I wonder how the disciples felt when the 2 men in white appeared, asked them why they were looking into the sky and then answered that it was indeed Jesus and that he was no longer there. 5. Before Jesus disappeared he told the disciples that they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit. I wonder what they thought would happen. I wonder what they thought the Holy Spirit was. I wonder what you think the Holy Spirit is. 6. When Jesus vanished, I wonder if he was really gone. I wonder how he was still with the disciples. 7. I wonder where you are in this story. I wonder what part of this story is about you? Idea Sparkers for Our Gift to God Time 1.Today would be a great time for children to put all the Eastertide stories together in one project. They could do this as a class with a mural, with pairs of children working on a single story of this series, or they could put it together in a little booklet like the one below. For the example I made here I took 12" x18" pieces of construction paper from the paper closet, cut each of them into 3 long strips of 4"x 18" and folded each accordion-style into 6 sections. I went ahead and labeled each section with the story title: Known at the empty tomb, Known on a walk and at the inn, Known by his scars, Known at Breakfast, Known at the Great Commission, and Known on the hillside. You could also add where each scripture is found in the Bible. Then children can illustrate each block. 2. Another idea is to celebrate the ascension story on its own by making your own Ascending Jesus, as shown in this kit from Oriental Trading. You don't need a kit to make this- just a solo cup and string and paper. It would be much more meaningful for the children to make it their own way, drawing their own Jesus and constructing it as they want, like the children here have done. Other ideas? You could show the children images that artists have created showing the ascension and ask them to do their own watercolors or drawings of how they think it might have happened. It's a mystery, so it would be interesting to see how they picture it. Thank you all! Enjoy! Becky
