This lesson combines both Peter's Vision he had on the rooftop and continues with Peter traveling to see Cornelius and teaching him about Jesus. Today we are studying about Cornelius found in Acts 10:1-48. He lived in Caesarea and was a centurion (captain of 100 men) of the Italian Regiment (military). He was faithful and feared God. He gladly gave gifts to the poor and he prayed a lot. About three in the afternoon an angel of God came to him and said, “Cornelius.” He was scared when he saw the angel! The angel told him that God has heard his prayers. The angel told him to "Send for Simon Peter, and he will tell you what to do." The angel left and Cornelius told two servants and a soldier to go to Joppa to get Simon Peter. It was a 10-hour trip. The next day, at about noon, Peter went to the housetop to pray. He was very hungry, and he fell into a trance. He saw the heavens open up and something like a huge sheet tied by its four corners come to earth. It had all different kinds of animals, reptiles and birds on it. Peter wondered what that meant. This happened three times, and then went back up into heaven. (Acts 10:16) While he was thinking about it, the three men sent by Cornelius asked if Peter was there. Peter went down and told them that he was the Peter they were looking for. After they explained why Cornelius sent them, Peter invited them into his house. Peter got up in the morning and prepared to travel with Cornelius’ men. Peter took six Jewish believers along with him (Acts 11:12) on this journey. They split the traveling into a two-day journey from Joppa to Caesarea. When they went into the house, all the people that Cornelius had invited were there to greet Peter. (Acts 10:34) God sent Peter to teach Cornelius and his family. Peter told them that God doesn’t show favoritism. Everyone is treated the same in every nation that fears Him and is faithful to Him. He told them about Jesus and how He died. He said that we are commanded to preach to all people so all can go to Heaven. The thing was that at any other time, Peter and Cornelius wouldn’t be seen together, especially talking to each other because it was unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with someone from another country. (Acts 10:28) But when the people that were at the house of Cornelius heard what Peter had to say, they believed. The last verse (Acts 10:48) says that Peter told them to be baptized in the name of the Lord and then they asked Peter to stay for a few days with them. These updated Roman Centurion posters can be used for any lesson with a centurion. The last poster is Cornelius. These are in color only. Click here to download. This is my visual for this week. The 'sheet tied by the 4 corners' is hanging from the ceiling. I used fishing line to hang it. There are 2 dowel rods that the sheet is tied to keep it from sagging, and the fishing line is tied around the dowel rods. Peter's housetop is a piece of plywood on dowel rod legs. White fabric (that won't fray) cut into 12" large squares. This is about what I cut them. It depends on the fabric, and I just cut them to get the least amount of waste. In the picture, you see I used a white felt, and cut the squares into 18-inch pieces. (Picture 1) Cut two 40" lengths of fishing line, and tie to the opposite corners of the 'sheet'. (Picture 2) I pulled the fishing line up in the center of both pieces and made a loop to gather them. You can give the kids a dowel rod to hang it on to make it go up and down easier. The students will add any animals you hand out and take home their animals they brought. (I sent a note home with them last week and sent email reminders during the week) They can raise and lower the sheet like the vision. Click here to print the note from last week. It is a very basic list with animals that are in the Bible or easily recognized animals. It is not intended to be an in-depth list. This includes the color and black & white. Click here to download. These posters are more of a teacher's visual when discussing clean and unclean and were used with the above student handout chart of clean and unclean animals. Remember, this is intended for early elementary and is not an in-depth adult study on the laws God made for clean and unclean. There is a very basic outline that can be used with the posters and this lesson. Click here to download. This Bible lesson has so many good points that can be discussed. One point that Luke keeps making in Acts is that when people hear the Gospel, they believe in Jesus and immediately are baptized. Another is that Jesus loves everyone and salvation is for everyone. Since those points are made repeatedly in the following lessons, I took this time to talk about some of the old laws from the Old Testament, and some of the new laws that came into effect when Jesus died on the cross. We discussed the old law of sacrificing animals, and we are very thankful we don't have to do that! But, the new law includes baptism. We still worship, but the old law was on the Sabbath, being Saturday. Exodus 31:16 And, the new law on the first day of the week, being Sunday. (Acts 20:7) We mostly talked about clean and unclean food. The food choices were part of the new laws. I had a bigger table and more animals, but this will give you an idea of what I did. I gathered up animals, even my granddaughters Fisher Price ones, and the kids looked at their charts and we put the animal with the correct tag. You can print the clean and unclean tags here. These hanging monkeys and the snakes are from Dollar Tree. They LOVE the monkeys! I hang them on my arms and let them pick their color. But, the object is to discuss the clean vs. unclean according to God. These rats and bats are only sold around October. The first packs are at Wal Mart, the second ones in the mesh bags are at Dollar Tree. They love those, because they glow in the dark! I am a big fan of having the kids know who does what in the Bible. Or, for this post, are the people Old Testament or New Testament? We use the mailbox when there are just a couple of minutes to review the basic Bible facts. You can see the mailbox here. But, I thought instead of ( I changed my mind, and added the FFG also ☺) the file folder games that I have made for several Bible lessons, I wanted something on the wall that stays up and we can use when there is a little more extra time, which is very rare. But it happens. And time for Bible learning is a short time for some, so I don't want to waste it. I think I might even use it as kids come into class and we are waiting for everyone to arrive. But, anyway, I purchased the posters to use as the main topper, then the smaller set for sub headings. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but I do know I didn't want to spend the $30 for the pocket chart I liked! I wanted everything to match, and wanted it big so I couldn't print it myself. I found a poster I liked, then couldn't find anything else to match, etc. So, this is what I ended up with! I like the polka dots! The main top chart is CTP 1005 and is called Polka Dot Party and is $2.49. I cut the letters with my Cricut, using the Base Camp Cartridge, this Old/New was 3 1/2", and the rest cut at 2 1/2", including the Old and New on the following cards. The Old/New cards that match the above poster board are CTP 0957 $5.99 They have a border to match, CTP 7133 for $3.99, which the store did not have, but here it is so you can see it. While you are at CTP, you can go to the online catalog, then sign up for a free catalog to get more ideas! Most teacher's stores will let you request items also, that saves the shipping for you. This is the border I did find, that is a great match and matches some of the chart cards. I will use it on the bulletin board right next to this pocket chart. It is CD-1255 by Carson-Dellosa $2.99. You can also sign up at Carson-Dellosa for a free catalog. And, last, I also found another wall chart that I really liked, and would match everything. It is from Frog Street Press (FST 4684)... I'll find something to use it for!! $2.49 You can also get a free catalog from FSP, but you have to add it to your cart, place the order, and it goes through with out shipping charges. I decided to use the pocket charts I already had purchased just in case I could use them, because they were at the Dollar Spot @ Target! ☺So, I created the Bible people for use with this size pocket chart. I wanted to come up with something to correspond with Joseph's interpretations of dreams and during the first day of the week, while we were listening to the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat soundtrack, I got an idea during one of the songs. With the Elvis-inspired rhythm of Song of the King still pulsing in my head, I sat down and whipped up this Fat & Skinny Cows Dream printable. You can download your free copy here and this is what you'll need to direct your child to do: First, cut out all the cows, mix up the pieces, and then spread them out onto your work surface. Have your child sort them into groups on the two clouds. Gustily sing along with us, hip-gyrations optional: Well I was wandering along by the banks of the river When seven fat cows came up out of the Nile, uh-huh And right behind these fine healthy animals came seven other cows, skinny and vile, uh-huh Even though the fat cows show up before the skinny cows, Gv put the skinny cows all on the left. I decided I wasn't in a persnickety enough mood to have her switch them, so I let her just glue them down like this. After the cows are all glued down, have your child draw a line from one skinny cow to one fat cow (because the skinny ones ate the fat ones). Well the thin cows ate the fat cows which I thought would do them good, uh-huh But it didn't make them fatter like such a monster supper should Gv then added her own spin on this activity, because she decided to color in the fat cows with fat markers and the skinny cows with skinny markers. Bonus points for an activity's extension that wasn't anticipated! We just had fun with this little project. It gave Gv a chance to cut and glue (which she loves) and then allowed her the opportunity to practice sorting skills and one-to-one correspondence, along with counting all the cows. Plus, it gave us an excuse to keep looping Song of the King on the iPod as we sang and danced along to its fun beat. Hey, hey, hey Joseph Won't you tell poor old Pharaoh What does this crazy dream mean? Oh yeah So what do you think? Ready to rock out to Elvis-influenced tunes while sorting out these crazy cows? I am so PLEASED with the KIDDOS progress on MEMORIZING the DAYS of CREATION!! They always IMPRESS me. I decided to do a LITTLE SOMETHING extra for the KIDDOS. This is HOW it happened. I was at our local DOLLAR TREE, just browsing around, when all of a sudden I saw these PILL CONTAINERS. My excitement was uncontrollable, my adrenalin was flowing and those wheels in my head began spinning!! You see, as we work to Memorize WHAT GOD MADE and on WHAT DAY GOD MADE....We always talk about the BLESSINGS of each DAY OF CREATION!! ---I was wanting the KIDDOS to "MAKE" something special as a REVIEW of EACH DAY of CREATION. Well, those little PILL CONTAINERS are PERFECT!!! They have 7 (YES 7!!!!!) little individual containers and all screw together to make 1 LARGE container. So, I began looking for TINY little items that would fit in the little compartments....I found erasers, stickers, cotton, flowers, etc. and I made a few of the items, too. These TRAYS are perfect for holding the items the KIDDOS will be placing in their Pill Container turned DAYS of CREATION REVIEW TUBE. For DAY ONE... the KIDDOS will place a ROUND LAMINATED DOT in the top compartment. It is HALF BLACK and HALF YELLOW to represent GOD MADE LIGHT! FOR DAY 2 the KIDDOS will add a SMALL piece of cotton (CLOUDS) to the BLUE Compartment. For DAY 3, I found some small TREE STICKERS, GRASS STICKERS and an artificial flower. For DAY FOUR the KIDDOS will get a SMALL sun eraser, a small glittery star and a FOAMY MOON sticker. For DAY FIVE, the KIDDOS will get "BUBBLE" Style stickers...one with a BIRD and one with a FISH. Because, they are stickers I attached my bird to the TOP of the COMPARTMENT and my fish to the BOTTOM of the COMPARTMENT. For DAY SIX the KIDDOS will get to put in two ANIMAL stickers and a SMALL PRINTED (LAMINATED) cutout of ADAM and EVE. FOR DAY SEVEN the KIDDOS will get to put a ROUND LAMINATED CUT OUT that has "GOD RESTED" printed on it... THE KIDDOS will LABEL each COMPARTMENT with the CORRECT DAY of CREATION. These stickers were made by printing the DAYS on cardstock paper and running them through the sticker maker machine. Here are several pics of the little items the KIDDOS will add to their "PILL CONTAINER" turned DAYS of CREATION REVIEW TUBE. I know the KIDDOS will LOVE this activity. I LOVE the 3D objects that they will get to put in their little containers....I love it when I am wanting to do something "SPECIAL" and something comes together so easily. I suggest you wander through your local Dollar Tree and ask yourself, "COULD I USE THAT IN BIBLE CLASS?" If BIBLE CLASS is always on your mind---YOU WILL BE AMAZED at WHAT YOU WILL FIND!!! I have combined the usual lesson of God Talking to Samuel with more about Eli and the loss of the Ark of the Covenant in a battle. As you can see below, I had the lesson on the floor on blankets and turned off the lights since it was nighttime. Samuel will lead us to David next week. Today's lesson is found in 1 Samuel 1-4. There was a man named Elkanah and he had two wives. One was named Peninnah, and the other was Hannah. They went to worship and sacrifice to God every year. Elkanah loved Hannah, but she could not have any children, and Phinehas made her miserable because of it. So, every year when they went to worship, Hannah would cry and not eat. Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle. (1:9) Eli was watching Hannah as she cried and prayed for God to give her a baby boy. She told God that she would give the baby to God and wouldn't shave his head. Eli saw Hannah praying and told her to go in peace, that the Lord would give Hannah her request. Hannah had a baby boy and she named him Samuel because “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.” Hannah told Elkanah that she didn't want to go give sacrifices to God until Samuel was finished nursing (about three years according to research). When they did go to worship as a family, they took three bulls, flour & wine with them. Elkanah & Hannah left Samuel at the temple to minister with Eli the priest. Hannah would make Samuel a new robe when they visited every year. Hannah also had three more sons and two daughters. Later, Eli and Samuel were lying down. Eli was old and couldn't see very well. The Lord called Samuel. And he answered, “Here I am!” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Eli told Samuel that he didn't call for him and to lay back down. This happened again, then the third time Eli realized that God must be talking to Samuel. Eli told Samuel to answer the Lord and say that His servant hears. The next time the voice said "Samuel! Samuel!" he answered. The Lord told Samuel that He was going to do something to Eli because of Eli's wicked sons. Eli knew what they were doing, and he didn't stop them. Samuel laid in bed until morning and was afraid to tell Eli what the Lord told him. Eli wanted to know what was said, so Samuel told him everything the Lord had told him. Eli told Samuel “It is the Lord. Let Him do what seems good to Him.” Samuel grew up and everyone knew that he was a prophet from the Lord. Israel lost a battle to the Philistines. About 4,000 men were killed. They wondered why they lost the battle and decided to take the ark of the covenant from Shiloh and bring it to their camp. Maybe it would help save them from their enemies. Eli's two bad sons were there. When the ark of the covenant came into camp, they shouted so loud the ground shook! The Philistines wondered what was going on! They worried that they would have to fight God! But they shouted to fight! The Philistine's won the battle. There was a huge slaughter with 30,000-foot soldiers killed. The ark of the covenant was taken! Both of Eli's sons were killed. A man went running to Shiloh and told the city what had happened. Eli was 98 years old and was blind. He asked the man what had happened. The man told Eli about his sons and that the ark was taken. When Eli heard about the ark of the covenant, he fell off his seat backward and broke his neck! He was a judge for Israel for 40 years. Samuel became judge to Israel. He was a good judge and turned the people back to God. We will continue with Samuel next week as we talk about David. For today's activity, I decided to lay a blanket on the floor, and sit on the floor to do the lesson. First, we talked about if God called to them, what would they do, think, how would they answer. Does God talk directly to us today? We have the Bible. Can we talk to God? Yes, in prayer. We looked at the following question sheet and discussed things we can do to listen and obey the various people listed. I started the lesson and turned off the lights and said "Samuel, ..." I used this lantern to have Samuel answer Eli. We continued the lesson on the floor, then moved to the table to finish worksheets, etc. You can print the above question sheet here. We pray for our owies every service in my class. When I say that its time to pray, each child wants to show me their owie that they want to pray for. It's quite adorable, nearly comical, to watch them search for the littlest scratch that they may have to pray for. They are actually disappointed when they don't have an owie to pray for. In that case, I tell them that they can help their friend pray for their owie. Before we pray I tell them to put their hand on their owie to show Jesus where it is, because He is the only one that can heal all of their owies. Their child-like faith is very evident in this moment, as they come to know Jesus as their healer. Bible Truth: Jesus heals me. Bible Story: Jesus heals a man who could not walk when his friends bring him to Jesus. Bible Study: Luke 5:17-26; Mark 2:1-12; 1 Peter 2:24; Psalms 103:1-3 teach Here are a couple different visuals to show as you narrate or read this story from a children's Bible. diorama drama This story also lends itself well to a 3-D diorama dramatization in order to show the paralyzed man being lowered through the roof. I created my diorama by inserting felt into a shoe box and then placing my flannel graph characters into the box. I made the paralyzed man and the bed according to the craft instructions found below. I tied yarn to the four corners of the bed, and used a craft stick on top of the box to hold the man in place after lowering him down. Release the yarn from the stick, so that after Jesus heals him the man can stand up, and "carry" his bed. (See the craft tutorial below.) bend and tell This is such a simple and genius way to tell this story! I have seen it a few different places, but I have no idea where the concept originated. All you need is four strips of card stock or tag board, a hole punch and three brads. In fact their faith is quite commendable! In this game four children work together like the friends in the story. You will need: a pillowcase a doll or stuffed animal field cones or chairs Setup a few cones staggered across the room. Have all the children line up at one end of the room. Choose one child to be "Jesus" and stand at the other end of the room. Choose four children to be the four friends. Their task is to each hold a corner of the pillowcase, carrying the doll or stuffed animal, and weave around the cones to bring their "friend" to Jesus. If they drop their "friend" they must go back to the beginning. When they reach the end, have the child who is "Jesus" repeat after you saying, "Your sins are forgiven. Arise, take up your bed and walk." Everyone claps and celebrates, thanking Jesus for healing their "friend". Repeat, giving each child the opportunity to be a "friend" and/or "Jesus". craft coloring page Here is a coloring page to accompany this story. I suggest gluing four pieces of yarn for the ropes attached to the bed, and gluing a piece of cloth on the blanket covering the man. band-aid art In this week's story, Jesus forgives the man's sin and heals him. Print this simple activity sheet based on Psalms 103:2-3. Have the children color the heart, and then let them stick a few band-aids on the heart. Kids love the opportunity to put band-aids on by themselves! arise and walk This is the man and bed that I used in the diorama. The children can each make their own to take home and retell the story. You will need: this man template (printed on card stock) felt craft sticks scissors crayons glue hole punch brad permanent marker This man's legs did not work. He could not walk. His friends had to carry him on his bed. Jesus healed him! He forgave the man's sin, and told him to take up his bed and go to his house. To prepare cut out the man templates, and cut felt into 4 1/2" x 2 1/4" rectangles. Punch a whole in the center of the man's body. In class, help the children glue their felt pieces to craft sticks. Have them color the man, then attach the the man to the felt with the brad.
