1) Welcome: 2) Songs: Start the Story Hour with the learning our names song. Go around the circle or table and introduce each child. Here is a cute little song to reinforce the idea of stars in the sky: (sing like Twinkle Twinkle) Twinkle twinkle little star, How I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the night. Twinkle twinkle little star, How I wonder what you are. Twinkle twinkle little star How I wonder what you are God has put you in the sky And sometimes I wonder why But it’s good t shine up there You remind me of God's Care. 3) Prayer... Ask God to work the Holy Spirit in our hearts to give us the faith to move mountains. 4) Theme: Remind the children of the theme of the unit: God works among his covenant people to prepare the world for the Savior. Hebrews 12:1&2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us… look to Jesus.” Today we are going to hear a story about Abraham. Abraham and his wife Sarah had no children, but God promised to make their descendants as many as the stars in the sky. How would God do this? Abraham had to trust in God. 5) Bible Story: Today’s Story is "Abraham" . Read pages 33-38 (R 37-42) from the Read and Learn Bible (Scholastic). 6) Text: Today’s Text is: Genesis 15:5 "...Look towards the heaven, and number the starts, if you are able to number them... So shall your descendants be." 7) Crafts: Number the stars... Here is a simple craft that small children love to do. Give each child a sheet of black or dark blue constructions paper for the "sky." Provide lots of star stickers and allow the kids to put as many stars in the sky as they like. Then, challenge the children to count the stars! Or you can use the coloring page below, and do the same idea... lots and lots of stars. Most dollar stores sell packs of about 500 star stickers in gold, silver, red and blue. Worth every penny. If you have a star punch, you could punch out stars from colored paper, for some variety. 8) Closing Prayer... say the Lord's Prayer together with the children. 9) Going Home: Sing the closing together. Then, check to see if all the children have collected their crafts and coloring sheets before they go home. Say goodbye and tell them that you enjoyed learning about God together and were happy to have them today! I havent had a chance to do it much since becoming a mom, but I LOVE genealogy! What I loved the most-other then stumbling upon strong Christians who had been major influences in the lives of those around them-was how it made history come alive for me. Somehow, understanding how their lives all wove together made them feel more real. This drew me to want to make a family tree for Abraham and his descendants. We are getting ready to talk about Joseph and the coat of many colors, and I wanted the kids to understand that Joseph isnt some random dude in a new story-he is Jacob's son, and Isaac's grandson, and Abraham's great-grandson. I wanted to be able to show them how it was the same relation as our own great-grandparents. So I came up with a family tree printable to put into our Bible Activity Book. We discussed the family of Abraham as Mustang and Charger cut out all 22 people. I actually thought long and hard about what to do about the 'questionable' story of having Bilhah and Zilpah in the story. Should I leave them out, should I say they were wives, or what? I finally decided just to tell it like it is, figuring it would be more confusing to untell my made up story and explain why I had mislead the kids in the future. Turns out, the kids didnt even bat an eye. I DIDNT go into the entire story of how Jacob worked for Rachel 14 years and the fighting between Rachel and Leah. I mentioned they were sisters, and that Bilhah and Zilpah were maid-servants and we just discussed how many kids each of them had. The Beginner's Bible that we follow leaves this story out completely, so I didnt want to get into it too much. When it came time to glue all the people down, they were a little disappointed-apparently I'm going to have to make a second set for story telling. The little people ARE pretty darn cute. In the end the project took a VERY long time-well over an hour. I wished I had thought of this earlier and added to the tree with each story. Oh well! I used a file folder and glued Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Esau on the first page. On the inside, we put Jacob again (file includes two Jacobs), Rachel, Leah, Zilpah and Bilhah, and all the kids. In case you dont want to look it up, place the following kids with their moms: Leah-Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dinah, & Issachar Zilpah (Leah's maid)-Gad & Asher Rachel-Joseph and Benjamin Bilhah (Rachel's maid)-Dan and Naphtali I didnt worry about putting all 13 in order, as it would be confusing, but I did put the kids in order under their moms. I intend to have the kids refer to this tree in the future-and maybe even when they are a bit older, so I want some accuracy to the tree. For week five of God's Little Explorers, we moved on to the story of God's Promise to Abraham, and the letter 't'. Traveling with a Tent An Exploration of the letter 't' Letter: t Theme/Focus: God's Promise to Abraham Memory Verse: Hebrews 11: 9-11 (Excerpts) "By faith [Abraham]...lived in tents...and was enabled to become a father because he considered Him faithful who made the promise." Song: Father Abraham I like to give Ada and Ida as visual a representation of the song as I can, considering they are not readers. For 'Oh be Careful Little Eyes' I used a rebus. For this song, we used paper dolls (blog post forthcoming on our paper doll fun). Introductory Activity: Took the easy route here and watched the Veggie Tales episode, Abe's Amazing Promise. Bible Craft: I like using stickers to exercise Ida and Ada's fine motor skills. Together they placed 100 stars in the night sky above Abraham. I had Ada colour in a picture of Abraham from Christian Preschool Printables, then cut him out and added him to our picture. Ada also traced the words 'God's Promise to Abraham'. Math Connection: Counting to 100. I chose 100 stars exactly in the previous activity because I knew I wanted to introduce the concept of counting to 100. I used another 100 stars to create a chart where we circled the ages of people we know, and added Abraham and Sarah, to give an idea of just how long they waited on God. I don't have photos, but we also made paperclip chains (2 for Ida, 3 for Ada, 38 for Mummy, 65 for Pa - my Dad - and then 100 for Abraham). This gave a very good representation of 100 as well. In a group of more children, you could have them take steps to represent years, and have someone stand at 3 steps, 20 steps, 100 steps etc. Cutting/Collage Activity: This was really in place of doing a collage this week. Ada cut out the 't' to place in the tent we had made. As we are making in interactive notebook of all their Explorers lessons, I like to include some pages that are actually interactive! Vocabulary Turtle: We actually did a number of turtle activities that I have not included here (in the interests of not boring you to death!). I liked including the turtle not only for the 't', but because the turtle carries his home on his back, in the same way that Abraham and Sarah carried their household for years as they obeyed God and traveled where he led them. The turtle has liftable flaps under which are pictures of 't' things. I had Ada trace the easier words on the flaps. Reading Readiness: I like Becky (from This Reading Mama)'s resources very much. When Ada is ready, I am going to use her 'Phonics by the Book' Curriculum, probably in conjuction with a repeat of God's Little Explorers for Ida. As Ada gets more and more ready to read, I have begun including some of Becky's Reading the Alphabet resources (another GREAT pre-reader curriculum). Both Ada and Ida struggle with 'left to right' and while she can't read the sentence, she learned the sentence, and I had her use the turtle to 'walk along the sentence' from left to right. When I glued the activity into their notebook, I added arrows, laminated the turtle with packing tape for durability, and gave him his own pocket at the end of the sentence. Rhyme Time: Another resource from Reading the Alphabet. Ada is all about what rhymes with what at the moment, so I added a Rhyme Time into our curriculum every week. This will help introduce her to rime (as well as rhyme). Dot Marker Activities: I usually use Erica (at Confessions of a Homeschooler)'s alphabet dot marker pages, but I forgot to print one off this week, and ended up just making my own with paper and pencil. I made a modification in that I numbered the dots to reflect how the letter is constructed, and had her dot them in order. I think I will continue to do this. Nursery Rhyme: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star It only made sense to include this nursery rhyme this week. The colouring page came from Sparklebox and the star cutouts we did ourselves. Ada loves to cut, and if I don't give her things to cut, she somehow manages to find her preschool scissors and the I find little bits of paper all over the floor!
