Giant X-Plus Made with blocks from my lovely bees, F+F2 and MoStash, I added the jumbo 24" size blocks (tutorial here). This was the flagship quilt at my very own show at our LQS in December/January and is now on MY bed - and such eye candy. I just love to look at all the scraps. So large, it wouldn't fit very well on my backyard fence so poor thing had to drag in the dirt a bit (and even got stepped on by my dogs -oops!) Fussy cutting and choosing what fabric would be in the jumbo blocks was especially fun. 96"x96" FMQ although challenging was quite the accomplishment on my home machine. Although it's not something I'd recommend or do again! My entry into the Blogger's Quilt Festival is a baby quilt I made a couple months back for a friend, who wanted to gift it to her son and daughter-in-law on the birth of their first baby (and her first grandchild!). The story starts much earlier, back in April, when I donated some baby quilts to our Rotary club's silent auction. My friend, who is also in Rotary with me, bid like crazy on the quilt with the more "girl" colours because she knew she was expecting a granddaughter. She was so sure she had won until she went to pick up the auction sheet and found someone else had snuck in a last minute bid! She came to me and asked if I would be willing to make another quilt and I was happy to say yes. I enjoy the process so much and it is nice to try out a colour scheme or theme that I normally wouldn't try and the added bonus? I get to add some fun scraps to my stash! My friend let me know the baby's parents were decorating the nursery in an owl theme and they like the colour yellow. I did some online browsing and found a great selection of owl-themed prints which I showed to my friend. She showed the parents-to-be and they selected a really fun print which I turned into the focus fabric. I was stuck for quite awhile as to what I would actually make. The quilt at the auction was made of varying width strips sewn together. I thought about that but wondered if the owl theme might get lost; when I look at a strip quilt (a design I really like) I tend to see all the strips have pretty much the same prominence in the design. In this case. I wanted to stay focused on having the owls front and centre, so I decided against it. I was very intrigued and drawn to Ashley's Converging Corners quilt over at Film in the Fridge and the more I looked at it, the more I realized I could fussy cut motifs from my focus fabric to make the owl theme pop and still drawn in a bunch of colour AND try out a block I was keen to attempt. This is the finished result; I call it Hootlet. Although making the quilt was not difficult, it represented a challenge for me. Actually, the quilts I made for the silent auction brought the same challenge; I was nervous about putting my work out there. I have come to realize that even when people are not quilters or crafters, they enjoy creativity and can appreciate what you have made. My "coolest", "youngest", and "hippest" friends are the ones who gush the most over my projects! I don't know why I am so surprised but their appreciation has totally drawn me out and I love showing my projects now! My friend let me in on the baby's name; so I was able to make a custom label for the back. Thank you for visiting my blog and hearing the story about my quilt festival entry! e. PS. Last summer, I started seeing all these fun blocks pop up on IG from Tula Pink's sampler QAL so, afraid I'd miss out on the fun, I jumped in. It was loads of fun seeing all the blocks pop up each day. I borrowed my friend's Tula Pink's sampler book. Instructions have their place :) "Figures" by Zen Chic had been sitting around waiting for the perfect project. I see some Cotton and Steel thrown in there too. And some Carolyn Friedlander I loved the freshness of each block being different. I was going to town making all these blocks but after a while, it was getting too crazy for me. After seeing Robin Picken's version here, I decided to start going in a different direction. . . more of an "organized chaos". . . . pulling each color outward to their own corner. It actually went much faster at that point because I found my favorite blocks (which are usually the easier ones) and made them in 5 different colors. Sometimes I just sewed a bunch of scraps together and called it a block :) . . . My quilt, My rules :) I knew exactly how I wanted to quilt it. There isn't much I can draw . . . But I can do numbers. So I drew a bunch of random numbers in random directions. You may notice that the quilting is not continuous. The reason why this quilt took so long (a year!), is that I buried all those beginning and end threads into the middle of the quilt. Thank goodness for the tennis open and some other championships that were going on. There probably aren't too many 8's in there since there are 6 threads to bury on that one. Gene Pool in Reel Time was inspired by a quilt made by Jen Kingwell. This fabric is designed by Zen Chic for Moda, which I purchased at the Houston market which you can read (or rather, see cool pictures) about here and here. This fabric isn't due out for a few months. It's a great line of fabric for all you film critics. I'm entering this into the small quilt category. quilt stats: 34 x 45 (washed) 22 fabrics - Reel Time by Zen Chic for Moda cut (8) 3 1/2 " sqs. of 22 fabrics (plus a few extra) arrange 2 pluses together on design wall, sew rows across quilting is stippled with color coordinating Aurifil thread warm & white cotton batting by The Warm Company pattern is a take off of "gene pool" by Jen Kingwell It will hang nicely in our theatre (tv room) You can read more about this quilt's making here. Hi there It's fall and a new Blogger's Quilt Festival is going on hosted by Amy Ellis from Amys Creative Side Here is my entry... My "Geese Gathering" Quilt... I got the idea for this quilt during a flying geese mini quilt swap I participated in. Flying geese are one of my most favourite patterns... I created this block in my CAD program, then I mirrored the block and build the whole quilt layout. I tried different colorways and choose one with an ombré effect... I have cut my fabric color card to choose the perfect color run... Then onto the backing… A stripe of all the colores I used in the front! Just turquoise would have been too boring!... This quilt was over two weeks in the longarm frame and I worked on it for approximately 45 hours. I quilted a mix between ruler work and freemotion quilting... Geometry is my thing. I love it since I learned it in 7th grade. The quilting on this quilt is very geometric. I tried to make a second layer just with the quilting. I hope you can see it. White is really hard to photograph. Welcome! I have enjoyed participating in the Blogger's Quilt Festival tremendously over the last year and I have been looking forward to its return. This year we can select 2 quilts to enter which somehow made the choice even more difficult. This Improv Circles quilt was really the first time I have just picked up the fabric and my rotary cutter and started making something. Generally my process involves a lot of thought, a lot of Flickr perusing, and plenty of indecision. It was so fun to just go somewhere unexpected with this quilt. When I started working on this, I intended to make an entire throw size quilt. But by the time I made a few blocks I knew that I wanted this to be something that I could see every day. 56 x 64 It's finally finished!!! I started this quilt because someone asked me about making a king size quilt. I didn't have any idea how long that would take so I made a few squares to find out. Well, it took me way too long and I had to price the quilt very high. So I set this aside for a couple months until I saw a paper piecing video on facebook that was much easier than the original directions which you can find here. This was my first time paper piecing and let me tell you, it will probably be the last! So after watching the video, I did get a little faster by doing one part of all the pieces, then the next. But it still took more time to make these blocks than I'm used to. I made an 8" block incase you're wondering. I used Kona cotton colors Iron Gray, Pepper, Sprout, Sunflower, and Bahama Blue. They work beautifully together in this modern quilt. For the quilting, I really wanted to do something custom, but I was dreading this part too, so the top sat out on the hallway rail for another month. My husband and I spent some time trying to come up with something modern looking that wouldn't take hours to quilt. Finally, we decided on these wavy lines. I think they turned out nice and add a bit of softness to the quilt. Not to mention it keeps the price down to a reasonable amount. Who wants to pay that much for custom quilting anyway? It was a good learning experience for me. I learned I don't like paper piecing! I'll be linking with My Quilt Infatuation, Busy Hands Quilts and Crazy Mom Quilts this week.
I'm really happy to join in on the Blogger's Quilt Festival hosted by Amy at Amy's Creative Side. I've loved looking through all the quilts before, and now I get to enter my own! You should really go check out all the great quilts linked up, there's so much inspiration. I've already added a few quilt patterns and techniques to my "to do" list. And now to my entry into the ROYGBIV category. (It's one of my favorite categories, and I'm not alone. It's probaby one of the happiest pages of links in the festival.) This is one of my favorite, yet trying quilts to date. I've written all about how to make the Quilt As You Go blocks here, the first time I thought I was finished here, the decision to hand quilt to mitigate lumpiness here, and the really finished post here. It was a lot of work, but the end result is so happy. It has a permanent place on the couch and has traveled with me when I've slept away from home. The blocks are all Quilt-As-You-Go, done in dense straight lines. Then, after piecing them together and backing it with flannel, I hand quilted with Perle cotton. I loved those evenings, just sitting under it and adding stitches. Most are just plain running stitches, but I got to highlight patterns in the fabric and outline things. Thanks for stopping by! Welcome to the Quilter's Blog Festival hosted by Amy's Creative Side. I hope you enjoy viewing all the amazing quilts from such talented quilters. Last fall while at quilt market in Houston, Carolyn Friedlander had this pattern hanging in her booth, and I fell fast! (don't you love all the pictures coming out of IG after fall market?) detailed, yet simple. I had been collecting my favorites of Carolyn's fabrics (except for that black and white stripped and checked). I procrastinated starting for a while when I realized that this pattern was that "paper piecing" thing that has been so popular recently. I'm not really into difficult quilts, or directions for that matter . . . But a nice friend walked me through it. These blocks are 5 inches square!!! I convinced myself that a wall hanging of 4 houses would be sufficient. But there were so many fabrics I still wanted to use, so I continued. Carolyn was an architect in her previous life, that's what makes her fabric designs so unique. Cross Hatch quilting seemed appropriate. I'm entering this piece in the modern quilt category. I'm so thankful I became a quilter at the start of the whole modern quilting age, because it just speaks to me!! Now, I'm excited to see what you've quilted . . .
