Often, I have a difficult student that results in me and my team creating a behavior plan for that student. More often than not we work towards using positive incentives for students to earn with the behavior chart rather than consequences or taking things away. But, with middle school students, sometimes it is hard to find age-appropriate rewards. Get the Parents Involved I try to get the parents involved with the behavior plans. Sometimes the most appropriate rewards for the students involve things that are more appropriate to happen at home. I have had students whose parents determined that the best reward was some screen time after dinner or a special family activity, or even a food reward (at home since we can’t give the kids food at school). Getting the parents involved also helps because they can follow up with the students at home about how the behavior plan is working. Having the parents and teachers on the same team with expectations and rules does help reinforce the good behaviors. Computer Time When determining what reward is appropriate you also need to determine how quickly the student needs to earn the reward. Some students need constant and immediate feedback. I had a student who twice a day could earn 5 minutes of free time on a computer. We determined that his missing 5 minutes of instruction because he was having a good day, was better than the hours of instruction he would miss when his behaviors were not matching classroom expectations. For some students, you can give them weekly rewards, daily rewards, or if it is really an urgent issue they can receive rewards more frequently than that. But, computer time is always a popular one with my students. And on the school Chromebooks, there are not any inappropriate things that the student can get into that we have to worry about. You could allow the student to play an age-appropriate game, or just watch a video. Social Activities Some students are motivated by getting the opportunity to spend time with friends. Maybe you reward them with letting them pick their own seat for a day. Make sure that if you do this though, it is a student that will make a good decision. You don’t want to offer this to a student who will create a bigger issue. Another option is to give them some free time to socialize with their friends. Or, if you have a cafeteria with assigned seating, their reward could be getting to pick their own seat for a day. Use something of the teachers Other easy ideas are to let the student sit in your chair, use a fun pen, or be able to teach part of the lesson. I have had students whose favorite thing was to teach something and they would do anything to get that opportunity. Homework Pass This one can be tricky if you are not the primary teacher in the classroom. But, many of my students are extremely motivated by a homework pass. But, this is something that I struggle with because my co-teachers need to be in agreement to accept the homework pass. Often I am faced with contention when I want to use this reward so if you are going to do this, make sure that all teachers on the team, or all teachers that are involved, understand why this is the best option and hopefully agree with you that it is worth it. Music Occasionally, I will offer the reward of being able to listen to music while they work. Sometimes this is done in my room where I play music for everyone to hear. Or, sometimes I do this when the students are in the computer lab. They can play their own music on the computer and listen with headphones. The one drawback that I have with this reward is that my school has a strict no cell phone policy. So, it only works in certain rooms where the students can listen to their own music. I love a good romantic staycation! You get to feel like you’ve traveled far away without the hassle of a long flight. If you plan it right, you never have to drive and you can have everything all in one place. I treat it like an all inclusive resort, because although you pay for each thing, it often comes out to much cheaper than those resorts! There are a couple of ingredients that I have found to make a romantic staycation perfect which I’ve shared below. Now just a disclaimer. Girls you can read this. You want to book a hotel that has everything you need to not have to leave. For our most recent staycation in Dallas, we booked a couple of nights at the Hall Arts Hotel for quite a few reasons. The main attraction for us was the bathtub. We had booked a suite of the Hall Arts Hotel, because of the incredible bath with big glass windows overlooking the city, perfect great conversation over a glass of wine and a great view. Look for a place that has something unique and one a kind and will be memorable. I also think it’s so important to look at the amenities and what extra the hotel provides. Splurging on a great hotel becomes worth it since you’ll be saving on money from the attractions you might visit. And maybe even splurge on a suite or something else special! Some things that I especially look for are a specialty restaurant for romantic dinners, a noteworthy (preferably rooftop) pool to relax the day away, and a car/shuttle service (just in case you decide to go out at least you don’t have to drive), and sometimes even a spa for a wonderful couple’s massage. Look at your local boutique hotels and see what places are really going to provide something special. We loved the Hall Arts Hotel because they had live music at night, an art gallery to walk around and see all the different artwork, complimentary wine at check-in, and an impressive gym (for a fun sweat date!). What to Bring for a Romantic Staycation Another wonderful thing that makes romantic staycations so well… romantic, is that instead of focusing on all the things to do and see, you can focus on each other! It’s the perfect chance to connect and build a strong relationship together. So I like to include a couple of things to make a romantic staycation extra romantic. If you want to surprise your significant other, I found these rose petals that I used to really set the mood. Distract them downstairs and set out a heart made from roses! I also love to bring things like couple’s games. Since you’re focusing on each other, it’s a great chance to get to know each other more and spend some quality bonding time. To me a bath is huge to the perfect romantic staycation and so I love to also have the perfect bath. Epsom salts, bubbles, scrubs, nice lotion, and face masks all come together for extra romance. And last but not least, a little lingerie. A romantic staycation is the perfect opportunity to pick out some new lingerie. You can even use the opportunity of a nice hotel room and do your own DIY boudoir shoot. Romantic Staycation Packing List These are things I like to bring on my romantic staycations, but feel free to create your own list! My Perfect Romantic Staycation Day With a whole day ahead where do you even begin. You make your romantic staycation how you want whether that means lying in bed all day or whatever you consider fun, but here’s a great little staycation itinerary if you need some help. Ingredients for the Perfect Romantic Staycation The possibilities for the perfect romantic staycation are endless! The only thing that matters is that you get to “travel” and yet still spend that quality time focusing on each other!

The weather hasn’t seemed to catch on yet, but it is officially spring-time! Here are some ways to spring clean your classroom. Wipe down everything! There are so many germs that have come through our classrooms this winter. I personally feel like I am wiping down all of my surfaces every day. But, take the time to thoroughly wipe down every surface in your room with a disinfectant. Don’t forget all of your student computers, your markers, and everywhere that the little hands touch. But also, wipe down your teacher desk. This winter you have had substitutes, paraprofessionals, and other adults in your room. Don’t forget to clean your computer, desk, door handles, drawer handles, etc. Throw out your used up markers By this time in the year, you have written on the board almost every day, if not every day, and your markers are starting to dry out. If you are the type of teacher that holds on to them convinced they will work again (me!) go through your markers, try them out, and throw out the ones that don’t work. Sometimes I even have a trustworthy student do this for me. But don’t pick your student that is just going to throw all of them out! Do you have enough markers that are actually working? It may be time to buy some more. Change up your bulletin board A new bulletin board always makes me feel like I have a fresh start! Choose a bulletin board with an inspirational message, or one of growth mindset, and revamp your classroom energy. Check out these ideas for growth mindset bulletin boards. Clean out your drawers With all of the hustle and bustle of the day, I often allow my drawers to get messy. Take some time to clean out all the odds and ends in your drawers. Make sure that everything has a home. Being able to find everything in your drawers and having them organized, will make you feel great! Purge your paperwork If you’re like me, you’ve been hoarding paperwork all winter. I am constantly keeping work samples, extra copies of things, notices, post-its, etc. Take time this month to sort through your piles of paperwork and purge all of the things that you don’t actually need anymore. If you have already written progress reports, don’t keep extraneous work samples. If you have one hard copy, don’t keep piles of copies that you probably won’t need!
