It's easy to take a day trip to North Berwick, a seaside town on the Firth of Forth 25 miles from Edinburgh. Here are 5 reasons you should go now.
Immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of Scotland's natural landscape with this evocative interpretation of Golden Samphire on the cliffs of Berwick-upon-Tweed. This exquisite piece artfully marries the vivid, untamed spirit of Scottish Flowers and Flora with the stylised touch of Abstract Impressionism. The artwork features a dynamic composition, where energetic strokes and bold textures collide to create a sense of movement akin to the coastal winds shaping the land. Yellows and greens dominate the scene, capturing the essence of the Golden Samphire in bloom, with hues ranging from the bright, sunlit tones of the cliff-top flora to the deeper, shadowed greens of the vegetation-rich crevices. The yellow not only reflects the inherent brightness of the flower but also evokes the radiant Scottish sunshine, bathing the cliffs in its warm glow. Contrasted against this warm colour palette is the cool azure of the distant sea, subtly rendered in abstract forms that give only a hint of the horizon and the water's reflective surface — an embodiment of tranquillity against the otherwise untamed landscape. Woven within this coastal tableau are delicate speckles of white, suggesting other wildflowers or the spray of the sea against the craggy rocks. This print offers an interpretation that is not confined by the rigidity of realism, allowing for a personal journey through its sweeping gestures and emotive colour field. As the eye traces the contours of the cliffs and the wild grasses that dance within the piece, one is invited to explore both the physical beauty of Berwick-upon-Tweed’s flora and the intangible essence that can only be conveyed through such an abstracted lens. Perfect for those who appreciate the wild Scottish countryside and the allure of modern artistic expressions, this print captures the soul of the land and translates it into a visual experience to be appreciated anew with each viewing.

This large series on railway poster deals mainly with what could be called the golden age of the railway poster, where the sun always shone and the British seaside was as glamorous as the Côte d’Azur. Many talented and famous artists like Frank Newbould, John Hassall and Terence Cuneo worked on these posters. For more information, and for other works, see part 1 also. Northumberland town straddles English and Scottish culture
Photographic Print of Poster showing the Northumberland town of Berwick- upon-Tweed, produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). The artist is Van Jones #MediaStorehouse
The border between Scotland and England is rich in history. It has been the site of battles, treaties, castles and crossroads. It is also a place where both countries display their nationalism: Saltires flying in the north, the Cross of St George to the south. But it can also be a lens through which to look at the changing history and identities of these two countries. Alistair Moffat is a life-long borderer and the ideal guide on this one-hundred-mile journey. We begin just north of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Already the battlelines have been drawn - the town having been grabbed by the English from Berwickshire in 1482 and never given back. From here we will head west as our tour travels backwards and forwards through history. In all, we will walk through eight centuries before we reach our journey's end at the mouth of the River Sark. Between Britain is a history book, a travelogue, a personal reminiscence and a gently prodding examination of national identity. But above all it is a celebration of a place and the people who live there. CPSIA choking or other US hazard warning - No California Proposition 65 hazard warning necessary

What’s your favourite railway journey? Mine is the journey from London to Edinburgh, and my favourite moment on that journey is when you cross the Royal Border Bridge, which straddles the historic frontier between England and Scotland. As the train glides across this graceful viaduct, high above the River Tweed, you look down upon my
